My school released early today so I was looking for something to do. I made a drop forward for my Spyder Compact. Here's what I did.....
I found a piece of aluminum conduit, put it in our vice, and put a rag around it to help reduce wear marks.
http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v45/ruskford/b8d3e8d0.jpg
I then started flattening the conduit by tightening the vice. I had to use a cheater bar.

http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v45/ruskford/01904908.jpg
After it was the pipe got flattened to my liking, I moved it over in the vise and started flattening more of it.
After I flattened more of it, I decided to cut the excess off. So I cut off the excess with our chop-saw or whatever you want to call it.
http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v45/ruskford/e1c4a352.jpg
I then filed off the burrs that the saw had left.
http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v45/ruskford/3716616f.jpg
I then put it back in the vise and flattened the rest of it.

Then I put my bottomline ASA on it and marked where to drill the holes and where to bend it.
After I had the marks on it, I lined them up with the vise and began to bend the flattened pipe. (again with the cheater bar)

After I bent both sides of the drop forward, I drilled the holes for the screws. I drilled the screws for the trigger frame at 5/32" and drilled the ones for the ASA at 11/64" (with drillpress)
http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v45/ruskford/3443fd92.jpg
Then I put it on my marker to make sure everything fit ok, which everything did!
Since all of the hard stuff was over, then all I had to do was make it look pretty!:D
Here's what it looked like before:

And here is what it looked like after I used a scratch pad and polished it.

Here's what it looks like on my spyder with a 20 oz. co2 on it.

All in all, it probably took me about 2 1/2 hours to do.
I know it's kinda crude, but it's a good alternative for a person like me with no money!

that is uber ghetto.
its not bad..but hell yeah its better than spending 50+ dollars on a "real" drop.
Props for the time well spent.
im doing something similar.
Not as long and im keeping the stock dropforward that came with the e99, and just gonna add a lil extension to that.
hopefully itll turn out pretty good.
:)

I'm kinda surprised that no one said it was ghetto yet! lol
Yeah, this beats spending money on a drop. This one cost me nothing except about 2 1/2 hrs. of work!
Good luck with your drop! I wanna see pics when you're done!;)

you need to use solid plate aircraft grade aluminum like this. the fee is a bit greater though. i made this one in about an hour and a half

See, "fees" were what I wanted to avoid with this project.;) Although, I may do something like what you did, in the future. It looks nice!

i didnt bend it i cut it out that shape. when you bend aluminum you weaken it, by cutting it out you dont take away from the integrity of the material.

i have a machine shop right by my house and they let me scronge through their scrap pile. stop by a metal fab or machine shop and start shooting the sh.. with them and casually ask if they have any scrap aluminum. i told the guys what i was going to make and they were real cool and even gave me some tips

Wow. Never knew I was talking to someone nearly thirty.:D
I probably won't be able to go to a machine shop or anything like that because we don't have anything like that around here. I live in outside of a town of about 800-900.
We do have a bunch of scrap metal/aluminum lying around. I'll probably make something much nicer than what I have, out of the stuff we have around here, or out of something I find online.

you guys trying to make me feel old?? lol thanks for the birthday happys. i can still say im in my 20's for another year.
thunder the trick to cutting the aluminum is to keep the blade (of the jig/bandsaw) wet with lubricant and keep your blade speed down . wd 40 will work but burns up fast, motoroil works pretty good, thats if you dont have cutting fluid laying around ofcoarse.

what do you mean when you said "cheatbar"?
thunderpig
03-07-2004, 03:52 PM
By a "cheater bar" I meant a bar that I put over the vise's bar to gain leverage. That helped me flatten the pipe.
