View Full Version : Are Barrel Socks (Or Condoms) really safe?

I was just wondering how a Barrel Sock could really be safe?

I mean theoretically, couldn't a paintball tear through the end of the sock (I am assuming if that does happen the canvas or whatever material the Barrel Sock is made of will slow it down)?

I can see that they are safer than barrel plugs from the point that the barrel Sock won't fly out from the end of a barrel and end up injuring someone, but I still don't quite see how its safer than a barrel plug.

I just started using one (Barrel Sock), and effective next year the field where I ref/play at will mandate the use of them because their insurance regulations have changed.

They are much safer than barrel plugs. The material used is plenty strong enough to stop a paintball. If your paintball tears through one, you either have extremely high velocity or you're shooting marbles.

The main reason barrel plugs aren't as safe is because once you shoot your plug out, the gun can fire again and injure someone. The main concern isn't that the plug could hit someone, it's that 2nd and 3rd ball coming out. The sock will just keep catching all of them.

The main concern is because the newer electro guns can shoot a string of paint with just a brush of the trigger. The likelihood of shooting out the plug and then shooting some more is much higher with these guns.

well if its a nicer one, there shouldnt be any problems, i have a redz one that is made out of neoprene and doesnt have a seam at the end to break through . . . i think its way more effective than a barrel plug.

I have the Warrior Sports barrel condom. Much much safer than a plug.
If you get a chance to look at one up close you'll see that the end which fits over the barrel is reinforced with nylon webbing in addition to the nylon/rayon material.
It would take A LOT of force to break through this.

Hey Mike ? Didn't you just get these in @ County ?

Do you know what we're talking about?

I have a ws condom, it's were nice. Because of the nylon cord used to secure these, it's not as if they are taut as hell against the barrel, they were made so that the material could hit the wall, and move an inch or so forward to catch and snap back the ball, not break the ball like a plug.

Barrel condoms are safer, every one should use them.

Personally, I like plugs in the sense that it doesnt cover a big area of your paintball gun like a sock does. Your gun just cant look good with a sock on it. However, I have never once shot my plug out in a staging area or no-firing area. Only time I ever shot my plug out was when I forget to take it out. I do understand though, that alot of people are insanely dumb, and the barrel socks are safer so I'm glad they're implemented. They just need to make a clear one somewhow :)

It's still too vague then. Maybe this;

Barrel socks are good because if you dont use one your eye will get shot out and then people will get upset and you'll probably also get anthrax from it.

still probably wouldnt understand...

"bArrl sox is roxor cuase if you dotn usE one your eyez wll got shooted out and den peeps will get madder and yoll probaply also get antraxes from it. teh si 1337!#%!"

Actually I know exactly what he's talking about & I agree with him.

Any barrel with alot of porting (e.g. the Teardrop) tends to get a lot of junk in it which can cause breaks. A condom or sock covers almost all the porting preventing this.
Trust me, if you've ever played in the rain with a teardrop you really want the sock to keep the barrel dry in bewtween games.

Yes but ported and rifling are 2 different things. He used the wrong word so you can see how some confusion resulted...

I knew what he was talking about, and i despise the way teardrop front rape plug orings.

Bottom line is, when plugs came out, every one got them, reason? They were safer. Expect to see the same w/ condoms. Safty should always take priority over preferance.

Fair enough, I can see where that would be a little confusing.

I just wanna add my two cents
I have a barrel condom and no the ball will not break the bag on the end its reinforced but if you by chance fire repeated shots it may blow the bag right off I did so with just shooting air this weekend so I am assuming that it is easier with balls (heh) but I also say that even with that possibility (probably be fixed by tightening the stretchy thing or using one that is not stretchy would probably help) I think barrel condoms are way safer than barrel plugs I love em

Just wondering....you guys with ws condoms...or other similar products... Do you attach the lanyard to the feed neck or between the bolt and the cocking rod on the back block. I always put it on the feed neck...although I've seen pics of it both ways. I just wouldn't want it to mess up the ram if I shot and it pulled the lanyard tight and messed with the back block.

 why whould you use use a barrel condom instead of a plug if you have a barrel that was rifled????????

Lots of barrel plugs have o-rings that help them stay in the barrel, but lots of barrels have harsh porting, and the movement of the o-rings against the porting can cut the orings, or snip little peices off that can cause ball breaks in the barrel.

I put it around the feed; I think is better secured that way

actually i had an interesting experience with barrel condoms.
i was at my local field, playin wit my friends shocker. he had a barrel condom on, and da first game, i didnt know how sensitive da trigger was or how light and short it was. so da game was about to start, so i got ready and put my finger on the trigger....BAM da gun shoots, the barrel condom flies off, and i totally embarass myself, everyone stared at me and all i could say was "uh, nice trigger"

I would put mine around the feed neck, but its not secure, even after I synch up the cord. I have to stretch mine all the way towards the back of my tippy just below the rear sight on the end cap.

my sis' boyfriend was telling me about how sensitive this guys trigger on his E-mag was, if you just tapped it VERY lightly it would go off... so i figure a barrel condom would do very good 8-)

alot of electro triggers are like that, thats why i think these are a good idea.
