Ok, a slide check is for remotes. A remote hose will hold probably 5-10 shots in it after you disconnect it. The slide check keeps it from escaping, thus saving you 5-10 shots.
A stabilizer is another name for a regulator. Regulators regulate the pressure going in to your gun for more consistency, so you get better accuracy.
As for nitro, nitro is actually a good deal cheaper than CO2. All it really is is compressed air. At my field you can pay $5 for a single CO2 fill or $10 for all day nitro.

after the tank, are there any other expenses in a nitro set-up? does the gun need to be modified to accept nitro?

Well either your marker will take nitro or it wont. Most markers will run both. One thing I have read is that you should get a fiber bottle. COmpressed air gets hot and on a steel bottle your pressure will move up and down depending on the temp. So if you spend a little move on fiber you will be at a steady temp. From what I am learning steady and accurate markers will win over fancy and fast.

Stabilizer usually refers to the Palmer Stabilizer reg, doesn't it?

the palmer stabalizer is just the name of the reg. i think the term got kinda started out that way. The slide check on a remote is really made so that you can quickly disconect the air to your gun without disconecting the C02 from the remote.
