Everyone thinks that Model 98's are incredibly good. My friends think they are wicked good, but they have nothing! Why are they so recommended at stores?

they are great because they are a great buy for the money. i don't own a tippmann or spyder but i would go with the 98 if i were a newbie. you could take the thing and throw it off a roof and it could hit cement and it would work fine. there is no way a beginer could mess it up thats why they are recomended.

Cory, did you forget that circular reasoning is one of the logical fallacies? You cant say it is great because it is a great buy for the money.....WHY is it a great buy for the money? And oh yeah, i doubt throwing a m98 off a 3 story building will ever occur in paintball games. If you want to argue for m98s and give pros about this gun, try going into detail about its reliability, performance, and if ur going to talk about durability....please dont use "u can run it over with a car and it will still work". Say "I have used it for 5 years and have had NO problems with it" or some other example like that.

The M98 has a sweet trigger pull. By far the best in its class. I like the flip down feed port for quick squeeging.
There are also a lot of upgrades available, but no upgrade bodies.

again..this is my opinion...im going to try to make in unbiased. alrite.i've owned my gun for about a year now......and have had no problems with it. seirously....i've done so many trigger modds to it that now my m98's trigger is a heavy mouse click to shoot. also.....its very durable. i love the clamshell design. it has its pros and cons.... pros-easy to upgrade, easy to clean-easy to figure out whats messed up with ur gun if it every does cons-kinda ghetto if you know what i mean, lose parts more easily.(watch out for that front sight spring..i've almost lost it like every time i open up my gun)also....the gun is fast and i like it. there is a different feel to the gun than spyders or piranhas. the fore grip is at an angle..the thing is...when ur holdin the m98 like a rifle with the co2 tank as a stock.....it is very comfortable. but when ur in a snap shootin situation...the grip is a little uncomfortable. i prefer a vertical x chamber as my grip. also the m98 is very upgradeable...and u can prolly do most upgrades urself.

TLplus84,
I just did a modified trigger job on my M98 that is so Sweeeeet. It is seriously short and easy. My brother has done your trigger job or parts of it on his Spyder TL+ and I'd have to say that mine is now much sweeter than that, and all it took was a piece of isulated electrical wire that i removed the wire from and a drop of glue.
The main reason that i would suggest a M98 to a newbie, esp one that has never owned any kind of pump or other gun is that the M98 is an extremely easy gun to learn the internal working on. It and the Stingray are both inline, clamshell guns so all the parts are laid out there with the removal of only a few screws. And if for some reason they can't figure out how to put the gun back together, Almost anyone with some sort of gun experience can put it back together without the diagram. Also the design is tried and true, it is extremely simple and easy to see all the parts and therefore determine what is wrong with the gun on the off chance the gun malfunctions.

after having owned a m98custom for about a week, and then a spyder tl+ for a few weeks, I have a few opinions on both.

So far I haven't noticed anything bad about the spyder...so I'll just say that the m98 was heaver and uglier, longer, a ***** to field strip, loud...however, it has a useable site rail, very well constructed, many easy upgrade drop-in kits will be available (elcd, rt, etc...), indestructible, and even IT can look sweet with a few mods :)

my 2cents.

i dont like tippmanns. Their design makes them soo loud it isn't funny. especially when i hear a fire fight in the woods i can always tell whos firen' cuz the tippmanns like a laser.pew pew pew.The 2 piece casing doesn't help.

I can always tell when a tippmann's shooting because of it's loud noise, but they are a pretty good gun, I have used them, I like my gun more, but I wouldn't mind having a tipper.

y the 98 isnt the best newbie gun because the best newbie gun is a spyder ( not just because I own one ) they were designed for newbies I know a lot of people will correct me on this but I just think the compact is te best newbie gun and the rest of the spyders are for amuteur to pro but Im gonna upgrade my comp to be as good if ot better then the more expensive higher class guns

I didnt mean taking them into pro tournaments I meant you could upgrade them to make them so a pro would buy them and I dont think thier the best guns out there so settle down

I had a Ice Cold barrel on it, and it was pretty damn quite. But yes, the stock barrel makes them loud as hell.

I have a spyder compact and am half way done whit TL's trigger mod, and my gun already is shooting way better. But saying a gun is bad because it is loud? I don't get it. Who cares if it is loud. It's not like when you shoot someone won't hear you. I like it loud, it brings more people to me, to be shot down and humiliated(sp?).

My 2 cents

Good points: They are very reliable, good trigger, easy on paint and you can find them online for about $130.

To make them more quiet, polish the internal areas. Get a dremel and some good polish and smooth out the areas where there is movement. Wash it out, replace the internals and quiet! Also you can put some "bumper" on the bolt area to deaden the impact sound.

if you ask me tipmann's and kingman's gun are both great newbie guns. it isn't that spyders are better for newbies or 98's are better for newbis there both great buys if your getting into the sport.

p.s. nice pic hillday!

Ray's arent clamshells bro :P

I think the tippmans are good. Good trigger out of box, durable. They are heavy though. I would own one, but i like spyders more. Bien able to drop the guts and run a squeegie through rocks.

Tippmanns are overated. The Model 98 is soposed to be as much as a Piranha STS G2. But it doesnt have 1/2 the features. It doesnt come with a 2 fing trigger, power feed, venturi, fore-grip or ex chamber, quick strip system, or lp chamber. To make the M98 1/2 as good as the STS G2 you would have to spend at least an extra 100 bucks. The M98 is crap for that price.

I don't know- they are Durable as hell- as durable as Automags, Stingrays, And Tigersharks( And don't give me that Stingrrays suck crap-They ARE tough), and you know they WILL work.ThAT'S WHY FIELDS ALL USE THEM- SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE, and easy to clean.:) They are good for a tournament back player- put a flatline, x-chamber, Dye Sticky Grips, rocket cock, new valve, new bolt, and a drop foward with about a 20oz tank. Although- I would rather spend the money on a better gun. lol
