i have a Piranha G2 Pro that constantly chops balls when using. happens when i fire fast or slow, and with different types of balls. thinking of upgrading. what's better convert to low pressure or change barrels? any suggestions would be appreciated including specific equipment to use.

Assuming you are shooting 300 fps and CO2 or a regulated air supply.

Check you indent. It may be cutting balls.
Not sure? Remove it and see if it still chops.

Ungass it and and feel for any edge inside the receiver or barrel.

Change paint. Use fresh. diablo is excellent. Blaze or Midnight.

I wouldnt convert to low pressure just yet..spend your money on a barrel which SHOULD stop your chopping problems, but check if theres anything "sticking" out inside of your marker..

Borrow a barrel. Otherwise you will have two barrels and still break paint.

Stock barrels are designed to shoot paintballs without breaking them.

You have some other problem.....

They are designed to shoot paintballs with HP without breaking either.

You have some other problem.....

Fix the problem....
It is new so take it back and let the dealer deal with the problem...

thanx for your replies. i have checked inside the gun and found no obstructions. also tried different fresh paints but my fish continues to chop excessive # of balls.

Let them screw with it. Get a different marker or let them fix it.

One last thing to try. Have you chrono it?

If you are just a little fast sometimes that will break balls on an irregular basis. Slow it down and see if that reduces your problem.

If it does it should still shoot 300 fps without breaking balls.

Is it the first shot after you've been carrying the marker around and not shooting it?

Not infrequently liquid CO2 will run down into the markers internals if you've been carrying it around pointed down. That will "super charge" the marker and that first shot will be really hot. Like 400 fps. That will break a ball. If so, the only cure is to carry it barrel up or go to Air or a remote etc. that will keep liquid CO2 out of your marker.

Borrow and air bottle and just see if that problem goes away.

bought gun used from a friend. he offered to take it back, but i know he used it without this problem. once in awhile it would break a ball for him, but not that often. i just want to fix it not return it. that's why i thought about modifying the gun to upgrade and hopefully correct it.

Instead of guessing, get it fixed and go play paintball.

They will sell you whatever, but just ask "If this doesn't solve the problem, can I get my money back?"

Can you describe the exact nature of ball chops? Such as:
1. Are the balls chopping when there's only one ball in the chamber?
2. Are there more than one ball in the chamber when it chops?
3. If you take out the barrel immediately after a chop, can you see paint at the back end of the barrel or does the paint start somewhere inside the barrel?
4. Are the remains of the chopped paintball partly in your bolt and partly in your vertical feed tube?
5. If you remove your hopper and hand load balls one at a time, does it still chop?
6. Typically, you can fit 3-4 balls in the vertical feed tube when the hopper is removed. Have you tried shooting the gun like this? Does it still chop?
7. If you shoot real slow (1 ball every 2 seconds), does it break on the very first paintball or does it break after a few balls?
8. When you checked the ball detent, was it protruding enough to stop the paintball? If it does not protrude enough, the second paintball may be halfway into the chamber, causing a chop condition.
Hope this helps.

All i know, is that my chrome and black piranha ext breaks every ball that i shoot. Now, i heard that this gun is suppose to be good especially in winter months, but i don't know what the hell is going on. If i shoot fast, the balls break. If i shoot slow, they tend to break less, but non the less about 1 in 5 break. I bought the gun awhile back, but i never took the time to return it. So, now i'm stuck with trying to make it work. What should i do? I heard getting an auto feed usually solves chopping and breaking problems, but i also here that the stock barrel sucks. I use C02, and always go in the cold months. I also know the balls are decent quality and that the gun speed is not so high that it's busting the balls. Can anyone PLEASE help me!

Whats your serial number? I'm sure on the Early models they had a super tight bore barrel and i broke just about everything. If its not the barrel its something with the chamber.
Go buy a new gun Or use it on a canvas to create an art masterpiece. You can call it, my paintball gun is now an airbrush.

Its the paint!!! One thing I've found out about Piranhas in general, even with different barrels, they are picky about paint. The Best paint amazingly i found tht works well with my gun is a High Quality Brass Eagle paint. I know it sounds horrible, but they worked well. RP Premium works well too

try cleaning the whole gun out good... it breaks alot of balls for me to.. and if i clean it it takes substantially longer for it to break another ball.. (and yes it is a hassel...) it could be the barrel to.. ive noticed that the bore size on my barrel is very small.. balls wont roll throught if i blow or hold upside down.. if any get stuck i need a stick

Turns out my problem is due completely to the crap stock barrel. I took my gun in to a store and had the guy work on it for awhile. He found that the stock barrel was chipped on the inside so what he did was give me another stock barrel out of the box. He tested the gun and it kept breaking balls. We had no idea what was going on. So he's like, lets try and after market barrel. Bang. . . gun starts shooting like it should. So in conclusion, this is a classic example of how pirahna stock barrels are not designed to work!!! Thanks for replies guys.

hehe, atleast u got it fixed ;) but for any gun you need a new barrel other than stock anyway.. but PMI barrels are extremely bad... 8in, very very small bore size = no thanks :D

ACtually PMI stock barrels arent really that bad as everybody says, but yes aftermarket barrels are much better. My stock barrel is 11" long and it was on my sts worked ok for me. Where did you get 8"??

on my.. STS G2 titanium.. (at least i think its 8 because its smaller than my frineds 12) and i guess ur right.. they dont suck THAT much because i can shoot in the same spot 5 times in a row ;) but they are still small

PMI says the VTL and BL have 9" and the rest of their guns have 11". They do round the numbers though. Stock barrel works good with small bore paint.

Just to add a little to the conversation, i spoke with a rep from pmi. He said that they were having many complaints about the stock barrels of my gun (ext G2). So he offered to send a new stock barrel in replacement, which was nice of him, but i told him not to waste the money on a stamp. who needs another worthless stock barrel, even if it is 11".

LET GOT SORT THEM OUT!!

yesterday I was chopping 1 in 10 balls with Pirahna STS G3 and today I bought a SmartPart Barrel Progressive 12 inch , and went to the back yard , 90 shots not 1 break and they were all at once with the exception of a feed problem after about 30 shots and then it was just a quick shake and all is good , and the grouping was awesome 8x8 or closer , so I am very satisfied with my barrel upgrade ,
just my $.02
