First thing to look for: Is the offer too good to be true. If you're getting an E-mag for $200, he's probably ripping you off.
Second: Feedback. Ask if he has feedback. If he doesn't ask if he's ever sold or bought anything on the trading forums before, and if he could make a feedback thread.
Third: Get his info. Name, address, phone number, e-mail, how old he or she is.
Fourth: Talk to the person as much as possible. If they're online once a week, and don't really respond to anything you say, that could be suspect. I talked to a guy for about a week, then decided to buy his cocker. I've been in contact with him ever since, and recently bought from him again.
If you're still uncomfortable, ask if he can send it COD. It costs a bit more (say you'd pay $5 or so more) but it's secure. The Mailman comes, and says here's your package. You can open it, look inside etc. In order to get the package though, you have to pay the mailman there. Then the sender gets his money in a few days.

Check his feedback, ask for pics, talk to people that have traded with him, search his user name on google to make sure there haven't been any past problems with him. Check what his post count is if it's on a forum, if it's high you can deduct that he's a good contributing member...
If you're still in doubt, buy it third party or COD.

I've never used the third party method but it sounds like a great idea. See if the seller is willing to do that.

I'd run it through a third party no matter what, especially if you're buying a gun from someone you don't know.
