varies with company & quality. i'm sure there's a base formula for the stuff, though.
here's how draxxus (http://www.draxxus.com/faqs/paintballs.asp?flash=1) makes their paint.

HEY,
Ummmmmmm , maybe its paint.lol Ya its probably an oil based paint so it doesnt swell the balls or leak trough them. Good luck and happy hunting.

Randy I don't think it's oil based. I'm not exactly sure what the paint is made of though...

It's water based... crap, I forget what it's real similiar to. I know that the outside is the same as the stuff that they make pills out of... hm. I think there's some cornstarch and food coloring in it too. Well, I'm sure you're resourceful and can find it.

Tuefelhunden is right. You can acutually eat paintballs, as me and my dog have found out. ( I didn''t mean for him to eat it, I was filling pods and dropped some). Paintballs don't taste that bad, except for BE, because their's are oily omn the outside. Draxxus had decient tasting paint.

I thought the paint was propolyne glycol based so the shells wouldn't soften (water would make the shells all mushy!) then a bunch of wax and color

Paint is made of the stuff in vegetable dye.

Its type A pig-skin gelatin, high grade food coloring, & thickener type fill. For atleast more highend paintbals.

Some companies also add wax to thicken the paint.. and staining paint has iodine.

I highly doubt that any paintball has iodine to it, because of all the lawsuits that could happen.

Not all paint, I was shooting some zap in the rain the other day and it was softening up.
