I want some opinions on a good back up marker that will perform well stock until I find the money to buy some upgrades.

I am looking to spend between $130-$200, maybe a little more.

I was looking at the Spyder line, but I am not sure which one to get.

The piranha STS is a good back-up gun.

Backup gun?
I just use Harsh Language.

You mean a second gun altogether or one you actually carry on the field?

A. Same as your main gun.
B. PGP.

Spyder Compact 2000. If you have a ****s Sporting Goods near you you can pick one up on sale for $99.00. If your looking for something to get you out of a sticky situation as a back up the PT enforcer works well. I own both guns and they both have done well. I usually play with either my Viper M1 military or my GT commando 2 but the spyder probably is a better gun for the money than either of those 2.

Why not just save up money and slowly retire your m98 to backup status as you get more into paintballing? That way you'd end up with a high end gun and a low end gun rather than 2 low end guns. But if that little speech didn't deter you Id opt for a spyder compact 2k as a semi, or get a pump, You can pick up a brand new Maverick Deluxe for 60 bucks or a New Hammer for 65 at http://www.123paintball.com
As long as you're just looking for a backup for rec ball then a pump would be a descent gun, and you have major bragging rights against all semis :)

you don't need a backup with a 98.

I agree with Eladamri. Get a new primary and use your Model98 as a backup.

Duuuuhhh...what was I thinkin' :P

If thats the case, which should I get? I've heard good things about both the cocker and the mag...gonna be a tough choice to decide between the 2.

However, I've heard the mag isn't as upgradable as a cocker, but it performs well stock. Can anyone shed some light on this?

It's all personal preference. The Mag and Cocker both have a lot of performance upgrades, just the Cocker has more cosmetic upgrades. The Mag has a pivoting trigger, the Cocker has a sliding trigger.
Maybe this will help you make your decision. It's a bit biased, though: http://www.automags.org/oldhtml/faq.htm#best

Also, the Cocker can be converted to a Sniper II if you ever play a pump game.
