View Full Version : What's Holding Us Back?

Recently, someone stated that woods and mil-sim players are holding the "sport" back.

This is complete and utter bullcrap.

Various television producers said along time ago, there was just too much cheating for speedball tournaments to be aired on television. So, who was holding us back from being on television? Tournaments players.

It's really interesting, because there have been a few old school tournaments aired on such networks as ESPN. Those where in the woods too. Guess the woods was holding us back even though they were aired...

But what looks worse? Little Johnnie Rebel Wanna-Be playing Civil War in the backyard or Chris Lasoya knocking someone out, Dynasty using illegal debounce mods, or Strange wiping hits? Let's not debate if everyone is doing it, rather, what looks worse to the average citizen who hears about or even worse, sees these events?

And how can you say the woods is holding us back when the majority of people that have played paintball are woods-type players? Scenario play is growing faster than tournament ball, we bring more money into the industry than the speedball crowd (who only learn to say, "Will you sponsor me?" instead of dropping cash into making the "sport" grow).

Sure, outlaw and backyards players have had some bad run-ins, but those are rare and far between.

Maybe after four years of being on here, I've just become disgruntled and it's time to take al ong hiatus? I think so.

Not everyone on here is against woodsball. The only people that make comments about woodsball are ignorant to where paintball started.

Pure ignorance, who in the hell said we were holding anyone back?

Just because I prefer speedball / hyperball / airball to woodsball doesn't mean I forget where the sport "came from."

I have some stuck up opinions about woodsballers, and the redneck types that play, and I honestly look down on them. I like to ball with the tourney players where egos fly, tempers flare, flames are exchanged, etc. It's more excited for me, and I like playing with guys who are lookin at the pro-tourney level more and play with $1000+ gear, etc.

It's not that I'm against woodsball, but I prefer a different aspect of paintball. Also, I don't really care where the sport came from, I like where it's going now, and that's where I intend on being; however, in no way do I see the woodsball aspect as "holding the sport back," because I think speedball and airball are actually taking over more in popularity, but still woodsball players will be woodsball players and that won't ever change.

1. I have never seen a "Redneck" playing woodsball, so thats just a stereotype.
2. You need to play woodsball with someone else b/c when I play it is very competitive.

Who said the sports being held back? NPPL was on Fox Sports in February for a few weeks in a row til they ran out of DVDs to broadcast, Ted Turner is showing up at NXL events...

Paintball players in the US is poised to top 10million..

and the bell just rang. Will post more later.

If you have never seen a redneck play paintball then you probably have never been to Springfield, Ohio..... and I like playing with rednecks lol... If anything is holding back paintball its that most adults today still look down at it as a "child's game" ....like playing bb gun wars and most have no clue what speedball is or think its ridiculous. Also the anti-gun movement is always a pain........ Teuf is right though ...it is soaring more and more now because of better, more modern coverage from tv.

I play more woodsball than speedball but I'd much rather play XBall over the woods any day. Woodsballers arent holding us back. The current Xball setup is keeping it off T.V. If they changed the setup to make it more exciting to the T.V. spectators (like put small camera's on the major "action" bunkers) the sport would start to grow more (although it might not be posotive growth)

:twocents:

EDIT: btw this is about that thread amzng_spyderman said about milsim isn't it?

Quite a few people around here, my field, and other boards think that woods players, scenario, outlaw, etc are holding the game back.

I don't think he was saying that paintball is being held back, I think he's pointing out that the game is growing despite the fact that all of these people are saying woods ballers are growing.

see, the facts say that paintball is the number 3 extreme sport in the whole world. period. this is what happens when a bunch of bored and most likely drunk buisness men get a really stupid idea and make it work out into one of the best ideas ever.

as for stupid idea, im intending the fact that they went out and baught cattle markers to shoot at eachother with... where as no normal human being in thier right mind would possibly think of something like that if paintball never existed in the first place....

so heres to drunken binges and stupid ideas!!! :notwrthy:

as for the sport being held back by woodsballers? i honestlly think that was one of the worst flames ive ever seen. worse than that whole "get a life" thing

I believe I was the one who said that. When I said that I was not talking about woodsball, I was talking about milsim. To me, milsim is something completely different from paintball and its also what most non-paintballers think of when they here the word paintball, and thats what I'm talking about. I didn't exactly phrase it right. Paintball is not really being held back my milsim players, but they are giving paintball a different image than what it really is.

I also never meant that post to be a flame.

The image is of a war game: guys shooting each other with guns to eliminate other players, enabling them to accomplish an objective.

In short...war. (We could seriously stretch this to mean all sports, but that would be dumb)

So, we have a war game...mil-sim builds on that, I don't see the problem?

thats some clarification to the whole mess Downfall. and now that i understand you better, i can see where your comeing from. it would be very nice IMO if there was a seperate class for milsim markers. like stock class, eclass and all that.

as alot of people do like milsims. myself included. would be interesting to have a full section just for that concept. you'd have all the nubes asking thier sniper questions there.... instead of everywhere else....

although i dont think milsim is holding the sport back at all. its just another branch on the family tree. like stock class, semi and electro. if they make the markers theres a niche for them, right? so why not give that niche a home?

what do ya say PBallers? should we make MilSim a class of its own? or do we keep it a rogue thought that just gets pushed into the back of our heads , and only brought out when we play games like Rainbow Six and think to ourselves "that would be bad *** if my marker looked like an MP5 or a P-90." now im sure most of us here grew up playing cops an robbers or some form of that game. where we had these cap guns that looked somewhat real. and when our parents got us new ones, they didnt quite look real, so we had to use our imagination. lets give our imagination a rest and let them make markers that look real. and work like real markers. and stop bashing people who enjoy useing a marker that looks, feels and functions like a real gun.

ide love to see speedball done w/ all pistols. zeus's, sydarms and pt extremes.... ohh my.

Also, it may be competitive, but not the kind of competition I go for.

Basketball was started with peaches in peach baskets, hmmm, go figure.

Yeah, I used to think Ohio was full of rednecks too, but then I moved to West Virginia for a year and my opinions changed.

BTW, about the woodsball tourneys on ESPN, there weren't any speedball tourneys then, and now speedball tourneys are on fairly often on FOXSN.

Ace, thats because most shops find it cheaper to just find some land out in the woods, and its easier to build bunkers out of whats already there.... some have speedball courts there to, although the one i play at, the speedball court is one of the bases for the whole woodsball field. the other base is a huge hill that everyone loves charging.

heh, thought i was gonna get arrested takeing that hill when i first got my WG-65. cops were at the gravel building investigateing an alarm and they saw me on the hill screaming for someone to surrender, then i opened fire when the guy ran... heh...
