View Full Version : What's wrong with camo?

How come I always see "newbie guides" that always seem to say that wearing camo while playing speedball makes you a n00b? What if I wanted to play a bit of speedball after a few woodball games? Would I be expected to have a change of clothes just for Speedball?
Enlighten me...

No. If you're on a walk on game and you're playing speedball with them, you're probobly going to play with your camo on. Thats normal.
But people who come to play speedball to play all day wearing they're camo, they look rediculous. Some jeans and a long sleeve shirt are better.

If its integrated speed-ball with woodsball courses, people wont really care, because they know you've come from the woodsball area. Just dont wear all-camo while ONLY playing speedball, its rediculous, because theres no trees there as is. And technically speaking, you'd be a moving tree on that field.

Oh, ok. I thought that that might be the actual case, just needed some clarification is all. Thnx.

IMHO, if it's not a big camo outfit(i.e, shirt, light pants, maybe a nice hat), then I don't see anything wrong with it. On the other hand, if you have an X-L Ghillie suit, camo paint, and anti-glare goggle covers...

I never wear camo. I wear all black, or maybe a bright red shirt, even when in the woods. But that's just me. I'm kinda odd that way. :D

Why not just wear a short sleeved shirt and jeans? Same goes for woods, really...I don't see why people go out and spend extra on camo, it doesn't help.

I like baggy camo, but nothing too big. Once I wore a ghillie to a speedball game(go ahead and laugh), and everyone targeted me right away. It was kinda cool to watch 20 paintballs hit me, with none of them breaking, but eventually I tripped over the suit and got tangled up. The ref stopped the game, and untangled me. You can't believe how embarassing something like that is.

yeah until you see a name over one of the pockets and you have a really thick woodscourse, with plenty of brush to sneak through.
I usually wear my dads woodland/grassland BDU's on any field. Why? Everyone on my team can call me over with a name. Why? its right above the right front pocket, stiched in black.
BTW, I lost the bottoms, so I just wear kakis or jeans.

Orrrrrr, you could just tell your team your name :eyes:
When I play woods on the rare occasion I play it like it's speedball anyway. Normally scares the crap out of the other team cause they're not used to it.

I don't see why playing like speedball in a woodsball course would be so bad. It's a lot harder for people to hit you when you run around because of all the trees and brush, etc.
Well, except for the fact that it'd be easier to run into the opposing team without even realizing it and the rougher terrain and stuff, I guess.

While BlackTech has a poitn, to a degree, I'm gonna have to ask him to watch the swear filters please.
The premise of the argument is that there's nothing inherently WRONG with wearing camo on a spedball field...it shouldn't hurt your performance any, it's more of a case of what's wrong with people in GENERAL. While I personally don't care about what someone wears to a speedball field, if I do see camo, I typically associate with a new player. About 90% of the time, I'm right. But when I'm wrong, and they play speedball well, then there's no reason anyone would care. The issue perpetuates itself mainly on the fact that most new players do not own jerseys, so most newbs do indeed wear camo. It's kinda a self-imposed stereotype. And stereotypes usually exist because there is accuracy in them to a degree.
I know most pro players won't say a word or think twice about a player who plays speedball well and wears camo. They won't care at all. he plays well. but when you are new and you wear camo....that's just adding to the newbiness,
See my point? No one expects you to change if you're gonna play woodsball afterwards, but if it's exclusivly a speedball field, thenwearing camo is...well...kinda silly, which is a polite way of saying kinda stupid. I mean, I could wear a pink jumpsuit to the speedball field, and people SHOULDN'T care, right? And if I'm damn good, then likely in all seriousness, no one would care, aside form them thinking it a bit odd. But they do care.
I know if I went to a field, despite what I just wrote here, and someone showed up in a pink jumpsuit, I would think something is very very wrong. But if the kid played well, I would just accept it and play some ball.

Nothing wrong with camo at all.
Whoever told you that is a buffoon.
Personally, I think it's lame to dress like a wannabe motocross rider running around with a paintball marker.

I don't mind people who wear camo, but if wearing jerseys is lame, how is camo not? You're wearing something designed to hide you in a woods background on an open, multicolored field. That's pretty hypocritical.

that there is a steryotype of camo.
not all camo is a woodland bdu.
Here lets look up camoflage in meriam websters dictionary: "Hide by disguising"
so technically, blue would work semi-decent on most barreled fields etc.
or you could get jerseys like that of your opponents ;)

I play Speedball in camo pants and a collored shirt. Call me crazy.

I don't mind people who wear camo, but if wearing jerseys is lame, how is camo not?
Because I don't play on cartoony multi-colored fields with inflatable neon balloons. I play on themed fields because that's way more enjoyable to me.
Furthermore, when paintball first started, there was no such thing as speedball. It was a "war game." Tournaments aired on ESPN were all Woodsball Tourneys. That was the game of paintball. You relied on tactics instead of rate of fire. You relied on concealment instead of spray-fests, and you didn't sling 6 cases of paint in a day of play.
Speedball and other more recent spin-offs were later additions, and so when I think of what paintball truly is, I think of woodsball and camo. Not Fox Racing jerseys and giant rubber neon colored geometric objects.

Ok, so just because paintball started in the woods means modificiations are stupid and pointless? Clearly SOMEONE thinks it's enjoyable, otherwise it wouldn't be as big as it is today. What you're saying is the exact same thing as the people who make fun of camo, it's just as juvenille when you try and down "neon inflated balloons". Because clearly, when a game is invented, we shouldn't change it at all, original ways are always the best for everyone, right?
And all of this is irrelevant, he was talking about playing on these "balloons" in the first place. So you're saying instead of wasting money on the "fox racing jerseys" he should waste it on camo on the neon balloons? Please.

No, I never said anything like that. I simply stated my opinion. But feel free to put words in my mouth if you have to.
It doesn't matter WHAT you wear on a speedball-type field, because you will never be concealed anyway when you're firing 16 BPS. Wear camo, wear neon, wear a clown suit (a local team actually does wear clown suits), or wear nothing at all. It makes no difference.
But if you're playing a rec field, I'd rather have green and brown tones than pink and yellow jerseys or something similar.

06-08-2004, 04:30 PM
Well sorry if I wrongfully stereotyped you as the kind of guy who thinks a different, faster type of paintball is stupid and juvenille, but judging from your open insults of it and your sig you can't blame me for assuming.
And again, it doesn't matter about rec fields, he specifically referenced speedball in his post. And of course it doesn't make a difference, I'm not arguing that with you. But you specifically said in your first post, it's stupid to think wearing camo is dumb, but it's not with jerseys? Again, we're talking speedball. I don't understand your logic.

There isn't any real logic behind a personal opinion.
In my personal opinion, paintball is a war game. So if I were to stop playing woodsball and scenarios and start playing speedball, I would *still* wear camo. It's a matter of tradition with me, that's all.
I'm old, ok? :P

Sorry to break up this little friendly discussion, but...
What would you think if I showed up on a speedball/woodsball field wearing this (http://www.actvil.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=7DUBefWSvDAtkbVUqGAzf-E-oCSyEni1V1U=?ProductID=IMOsFAY7E4QAAAD8RvbHR1xz) ?

You have the same misconception that many people who never play on speedball/Sup Air fields have: speedball takes no skill; all you have to do is spray paint all over the place. This is not true. Speedball takes a different kind of skill. Snapshooting, learning to use your bunker, etc. But one thing I've learned from arguing about this is that it's pointless. So I'll stop for now.
And Xiong, that's a cool jersey. :D

Look, I am in the Air Force and I have a surplus of BDUs for deployments and excercises. I wear them no matter what I play. Let your game do the talking. Besides, there is nothing better than watching people point and make fun of the kid in camo, then get bunkered by that same kid.
The only additional camo I bought was some Tiger Stripe pattern since there is a bunch of brush at the woodsball field I play at. But don't worry about your clothes, gear, whatever. Just play and have fun. You'll get more out of the sport that way.

They make great jerseys and pants for both play...I play with my jersey and pants by JT USA in both wood and speedball. What does that make me? Not like they make jerseys that are bright orange. I hate wearing camo because it is hot and useless for me. The mesh jerseys is comfortable, cool, and looks great yet still camoflauged when in the wood.

yeah i have realized recently that wearing full camo while paintballing in Arizona, in speedball at all for that matter, is pretty pointless. Because it is Arizona, it gets to freakin 100+ degrees and i'm sweatin so bad it's crazy. and i realized that wearin camo in an arena is pretty pointless, and as people say, kinda n00by. so now i wear my BDU pants (very thick, very nice for sliding and such) and a t-shirt. i was thinkin about buyin a jersey...but wasn't sure if i should, considering i'm not on a team or anythin yet.

There is nothing wrong with camo. I wear it because I wear old clothes that I don't care about it. I have plenty of camo from hunting. I wear camo in woods and speedball.

A wear a pair of army-camo pant and a red tshirt. I wear the camo pants b/c they are baggy and made of strong material that won't rip when I slide. I plan on wearing them untill I can afford some Redz or Dye pants.

Isn't that a jersey your wearing in the little picture under your name? First of all you need not be in a team to wear a jersey. Teams are for people who are CHICKEN SHHIITS to play alone.
