I know your gun puts out the same amount of gas for every shot, so how does one barrel use more gas than another?

You're right the gun will shoot the same amout of gas, but it won't move the same speed. If you get a longer barrel of equal quality just moving the ball through the whole length of the barrel will slow it down alot. If you have a barrel with a whole lot of porting it will let out air and you won't get the same amount of force so the same thing will happen. So to get it to shoot the right speed you have to screw out your velocity adjustor so you get more air per shot. Thus you use more air and your barrel wastes gas.

The difference between paintball guns and real guns is in the gas released and the amount of it. It a real gun the gas doesn't stop being produced for a while, and it can't get around the projectile. The longer it stays in the barrel, the more force is produced, to an extent. With a paintball gun there are very many ways for the gas to get around the ball, much of it doesn't even come out the front. It can get out through gaps in the gun, your ball feed, porting, and even gaps around the ball. By the time your ball reaches the 9th in. of the barrel usually most of the force behind it will already be gone.

So turning you velocity up uses more gas?

When you turn your velocity up what you are actually doing is making the valve use more gas per shot. You are increasing the opening in the valve to allow more gas to get through when you fire.

So, it looks to me like the freak is a gas hog........is this true?

Ya the smart parts family has a lot of porting. Good, quiet, accurate barrels but hogs, yes. Non-hog barrels, CP and Lapco.

the one thing you have to consider though is:
"do i want to be quiet?"
OR
"do i want to have good air efficiency?"

I really don't care if they know where I am because of how loud my barrel is.........Gas efficiency with an 88/45? i guess.....
