Here's how we're going to do this:

Name your top 5 favorite bands/artists. Then, i'll let you know why your music is stupid and boring, and based on your tastes, I will suggest good music.

This is constructive criticism. You will be a better person after you leave this thread. Don't try to flame/outwit me. It won't happen. Do a search. I don't lose arguments.

You, along with half of this board for some bizzare reason ,listen to long haired sleeveless shirt death metal. Cannibal Corpse didn't invent the guitar, and even slayer records stop being funny after a few spins. Chill out man. Listen to Neil Young.

Jesus Christ...

You sir need to realize that Fat Mike is tricking you by releasing 643642355454547654 records a year that all sound the same, and still you eat them up.

Look at who produced those albums, i'm sure the name "Ryan Green" pops up on nearly half of them. This is because fat mike forces most of his artists to be recorded by him and thus every record sounds like NOFX with a different guy singing. Generic punk rock will not expand your musical horizens. It is a stale, 1 dimensional genre.

lol, are we allowed to rebuttle?

Just for fun.

I bet there are 2, maybe 3 people on this site that can honestly say they have heard of all those bands. Also, I find Cannibal Corpse to be annoying alot of the time, and I dont like Slayer..i dont like thrash in general. Out of the bands i posted, Cryptopsy would be the only one defined as "death metal" even then, they sound alot like grindcore. Opeth, they just can't be defined. If anything they are progressive rock with melocidc death metal growls.. alot of their stuff is anyways. Mutiilation and Burzum.. Black metal, far different than death metal. Anathema, goth rock. They sound awesome, but deffenitly not death metal.

I dont listen to only metal and its variants. I was just listening to Tupac today, along with Pink Floyd and The Streets.

I'm prepared to be shut down now. I just got really boerd. :)

Anyways, I have a list of Khanate songs Queued on Soulseek, so we shall see how they are once they start downloading. I generally like all the bands you have reccomended in the past, Lightning Bolt.. Wow.

Its hard picking just five, so Ill go with what I commonly put on a playlist.

Flogging molly
Blackstar (mostly Talib Kweli and Mos Def)
G. Love and Special Sauce
Fugazi
The Clash
The Who
Dropkick Murphies
Outkast

Pretty diverse, I know.

What are some good stooges songs? I downloaded Gimme Danger a while ago and it's really good.

Also, people listen to what they listen to because they like it. Why do you want to change that? People choose to listen to music for many different reasons. Be it lyrics, complexity of the melody, or the general mood of the song, it's their own reason for listening to their choice of music, therefore you can't really judge it.

Good stooges songs: Search & Destroy, Loose, Down On The Street, Tv Eye, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell...

In fact, just go out and buy their album "fun house". Greatest rock record ever recorded.

your music: actually yours isn't all that bad. the only thing i'm not digging is the flogging molly/dropkick murphys. A bunch of dopey white kids at my school used to claim they were "IrishXcore" and drew a clover on the back of each of their fists. Like straightedge with X's but worse. Maybe somebody missed the memo but generic punk rock doesn't get any better when you sing about drinking beer with a dorky accent. Bag pipes and fiddles are not rock n' roll.

If you want good music to drink to, its all about The Rolling Stones' "Exile On Main Street"

not too bad. Iron Maiden is pretty lame, but they did have a few good songs 15-20 years ago. The problem with them is they released way too many albums. They look the same too. Some skeleton in a loin cloth shooting lazers out of its eyes or something equally lame. Led Zep is a great band, as long as you stay away from “In Through The Out Door”. Anyone who owns and actively listens to that record should be shot. GNR is a solid choice too, but again, if you own/enjoy “The Spaghetti Incident” you should be shot.

Lets break down this list. A band I’ve never heard of, but with a name like that I’m gonna just assume that they’re terrible. Then Mushroom head. Like Slipknot but not as popular? These guys get a big high five for out sucking a band that I had previously thought was the worst in the world. Incubus ughhh… SCIENCE was a step in the right direction for them everything else they’ve ever done is garbage. If someone buys me a staple gun I swear to god I will hunt down Brandon Boyd and staple his shirt to his chest. If he even owns any. Did I mention that these guys don’t know how to write music either? I should have. Now we have Disturbed. This list just gets better and better!!! This band has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Often times with bad music I can see why someone may enjoy the band even If I don’t. With Disturbed, this is not the case. These dudes are 40 years old and writing music like kids ¼ their age. Trade your guitars in for shovels guys, you’ll be doing the world a huge favor. Finally we have Staind. The fatass singer looks like Uncle Fester and Fred Durst has a hard on for him and the rest of his ****ty band. That alone instantly blacklists them. I really hope that tubby bald cry baby follows in the footsteps of the singer of Drowning Pool.

I hate to say it, but your bad taste may be terminal. I guess your best hope is to just take baby steps. We don’t want you jumping into anything 100% dirtmcgirt approved yet…Just start with the last 2 Tool albums and call me in the morning.

New York Dolls
Sex Pistols, actully more Public Image Limited as of late, John Lydons real band, not something manufactured by Malcom McLearen....

solid early 80’s/late70’s no wave/punk list. If you didn’t have a hard on for ska (yeah that’s right, I see that icon of yours) I might have appointed you a rock n’ roll deputy. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. The sex pistols are not a punk band. They are in fact a boy band. Right up there with Menudo and 98 Degrees. You sir need to listen to The Buzzcocks, The Germs, and The Weirdos.

weezer - blue is a solid record, pinkerton is genius and will never be matched. green and maldroit are average and often forgetable.

Muse - If you're going to jock radiohead at least get a singer that doesn't sound like Geddy Lee forcing his canadian love rocket into an eight year old girl.

Black Sabbath - Pre-Dio sabbath is awesome. those dudes really need to realize its time to quit though. Ozzy is a walking geriatric corpse.

Thrice - I guess they're not as bad as Thursday but that's not saying much now is it? I'll take any At The Drive In record over 99% of the half-assed yelly indie-emo that everyone is jerking off over these days.

even though I was going to do things chronologicly, i'll make an exception for you...

lay off the punk rock and diversify homie.

The Clash never really had a record that was solid from start to finish. However, London Calling and their self titled album are both worth listening to at some point. I've found that their later work, Sandanista, Cut The Crap, and even at times Combat Rock, for the most part are boring and uninspired. The Clash were predominantly a singles band, and that is what separates them from being just a good band as opposed to a "top 5" band candidate.

The River City Rebels aren't anything to write home about. Another band trying to jump on the "me too!" bandwagon. Theres at least 1000000 groups out there right now doing what they do.

The Casualties... god... where to begin

These morons look like "My First Punk Band" action figures. Contrary to popular belief stupid haircuts and no talent does not make you punk. These guys are just as bad, if not worse than ever image concious radio band out right now. Another one of the few bands with absolutely NO redeemable qualities.

I used to love Bad Religion 4 years ago. Then I relaized that they only have 3 albums worth owning and havn't progressed as musicians in 25 years. keep Suffer, No Control, and Against The Grain and be done with them.

Fifteen is a pretty forgetable band. They had one good album and then the meth freak singer went insane. the end.

Download every Mclusky song you can find. My favorites are Icarus Smicarus, Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues, and To Hell With Good Intentions.

Trapt

I guess it could get worse, but I just see way too many sick trashy hair bands in that list. You like older rock? Try some led zeppelin, the who, pink floyd, the beatles; that's some real rock. As for your new bands, RHCP is a decent band, sure, but it only gets worse from there. Well, Foo Fighters could be seen at the same level or a next step down, so I guess they're decent too. BUT Hoobastank and Trapt? I guess you really meant new music, didn't you.
I will recommend a good band that doesn't whine so much about girls or such: the Mars Volta. Great guitarist, I think even John Frusciante from RHCP plays with 'em on one song. Great music, great band.

...and I'm going to recommend this to a lot of people, but it's a sure-fire remedy for a lot of bad music. Get lots of classical music, and find out what music is really about at its core. Then it's more possible for one to respect real music.

Overly critical, but just trying to save you,

Christian music in general is the absolute worst thing ever (I can go into a nice rant about that if someone wants…).I'll take you up on that offer, lets hear it. I agree, I think most Christian music sucks, but there is some good stuff: Blindside, Project 86, Living Sacrifice, Phil Keaggy, Demon Hunter, Zao (death metal, don't really care for but alot mighta) , Extol (also death metal), and it appears As I Lay Dying is Christian too. There's also Switchfoot, Kutless, Relient K, Jars of Clay, Newsboys and POD.

Note: I don't even like or care for half of these bands, just pointing out some stuff I think many others would like.

Zao, Extol, and As I Lay Dying (All bands I listen to, which surprised me because they aren't all that popular; well in my area) aren't necessarily christian bands but they do have a religious twist to their style. Underoath is also another religiously motivated band.

But the thing that separates those 4 bands, amongst others I'm just using them as examples, from other religiously motivated bands is that they're not hardcore religion fanatics. They don't sing songs like, "Jesus, where are you?" or "Please god, hear my prayer!" that have lyrics worse than the title of the song.

There can be good religiously motivated bands and there can be really bad ones. Just like any other music genre.

But I think we can all agree Creed is the worst christian band ever formed.

Echoes, how can you say that ACDC, GNR, and Metallica aren't real rock? I like Zeppelin, but they're #6. Pink Floyd is too depressing for me, and the Beatles are #7. How can you put two great melodic original rock bands like APC and tool into the same batch as slipknot and korn? My goodness. Slipknot? Screaming, more screaming...and some power chords. And lots of banging. Korn = a bagpipe and some "angst"-filled rape lyrics by the attention-yearning driven Johnathan Davis or whatever the hell his name is. Each band's songs sound the same as their next. Good call on tool and APC though. I recommend a british band called Porcupine Tree, and I also recommend The Mars Volta. If you want to get into some similar "older" rock, I suggest stuff like Yes, The Who, and Led Zeppelin.

I'll listen to almost any type of music... I like anything from rap to Beethoven. I could listen to jazz for 5 hours straight, I just love it:tup:

Good call on the jazz, and yes it's good to have a wide variety of tastes. As long as the variety is good. Therefore put an X through hoobastank, (I already bashed them, see above a couple of posts.)

Good call on the Beethoven also...but when you say rap you must be forgetting that this is a music help thread.

Now, STO Balla again: queens of the stone age is a pretty good band. But I'm afraid blink 182 balanced the beam in the other direction. I won't even comment on them. And green day nibbles on the poo also. ...I guess you're right about GNR and ACDC, though...I just can't stand that stuff. Maybe it's good for that kind of music, though... Holocast your right. Iowa could be the worst CD ever but the first one with Corey wasn't so bad and this recent one is very good IMO. It seems like they're trying to be a bit more mainstream to me, with some acoustic songs and the no cussing thing. Anyway listen to their new CD. You may still hate them but you never know

The Roots are mediocre at best (though the fact that they play their own insturments is a plus) and Juraasic Five are terrible. People always complain about rappers only rhyming about hoes and cars, well bragging about not doing drugs and not using profanity is even worse.

Hopesfall, is boring tough guys hardcore slicked over and shined up by pretty emo kids. This is generic and boring. A million bands sound like this.

Mogwai is amazing, good pick. "Young Team" is still one of my favorites cds.

Gruvis Malt: Once upon a time, about 3 years back, Dirtmcgirt went to go see The White Stripes at the State Theater. While I was waiting in line to get in, some white guy with dreadlocks handed me a Gruvis Malt demo and a bunch of stickers. Because of the odd shape of the stickers I was able to put a HUGE sticker ***** on the large glass window of the state theater. It was beautiful, a perfect sticker ***** in every way shape and form. After the show I popped in the demo. Very forgetable jazzy rock. These dudes probably listen to 311 and this is their idea of "different" and "experimental" yawn.

A Perfect Circle is decent, but really just diet tool in the end.

The Mars Volta is a good band, much better than Sparta, but their full length is just too self indulgent and overwhelming.

overall your taste gets a C+. Now go and buy the new Sonic Youth record. Now.

ok before I go back to letting you know why you suck...

if I skipped over you, bump your post up. i'm too lazy to dig through nine pages to reply to everything.

Also i've noticed a lot of Metalica and Red Hot Chili Peppers... so i'm going to cover them right now.

First we'll take on Bro-talica. This is dopey inbred trailor park metal for people who drive trucks that have calvin pissing on random japanese companies and/or liberal politicians. When I was 12 me and my friend used to sit in his older brothers room and listen to "Kill em' All" and "Ride The Lightning" back then they were great, but again I was 12. The music these guys play just appeals to a lower IQ, period. Everything they do is just so straight forward and average it's amazing. At least back in the 80's they knew how to rock out. Everything they've done post "...And Justice For All" is terrible, with St. Anger being the peak of this atrocious radio friendly noise. I have never heard drums recorded worse. They sound like trash can lids. and lars is a douche.

RHCP: This is smelly white man funk. Anthony Kiedis can't sing and the drummer looks like Will Ferral which is just wierd. Thank god they have Flea and Johnny Fru to hold them together. By listening to the Chili Peppers and avoiding John Fruciante's solo work, you're just cheating yourself. Use your copy of "Californication" as a coaster and pick up his new record.

Your list screams one thing at me: Average.

3 of these bands I don't care enough about, or hate enough to really critisize. So i'll just focus on picking apart REM and Dave Mathews.

Thanks to inflections of funk and world music, Dave Mathews makes honkies feel like they're being adventurous. oh boy!
Dave and his boys are no slouches when it comes to playing their insturments but that can only take you so far. It seems post grateful dead, a number of people seem to think aimless pseudo-jazz influenced jams are the height of musicianship. At least dave can write a concise song, which is more than I can say for any other jam band out there. but being a jam band that's capable of writing a concise pop song doesn't make you good, it makes you The Spin Doctors. Dave just needs a wacky child molester beard like their singer. And hey, his band already has some token black dudes! AWESOME! I've said it before and I'll say it again. Rock music needs to excite, I want to hear something so distinct that it can change the face of music. DAVE MATHEWS IS BORING AND HAS NO SOUL. I could give you a list a mile long of inovative acoustic artists that are actually furthering music.

REM: I will admit their early albums from the 80's were quite inovative and different, given the time period. But, again (and honestly I always thought you liked this band) REM has solidified itself as one of the most boring bland bands ever. Your musical taste is the equivelant of warm vanilla pudding. You can't break windows, pick up hookers, and sniff white gold off of their tits while listening to "Everybody Hurts".

Listen to Bob Dylan, Devendra Banhart, and Sonic Youth. All off these are right up your alley and actually don't suck.

also, because this is my thread, i'm adding a sixth band to my list: Of Montreal.

I want all of you kids to go and dowload their new album "Satanic Panic In The Attic" right now and try to tell me it's not the most infectious and catchy thing you've ever heard. "Lysergic Bliss" is one of the greatest pop songs ever written, period.

Actually, I think Dubis could learn a great deal from classical as regards popular music. The great classics are still known because they weren't just "music", but they very well became "art". There is a big difference between Blink 182 and Tchaikovsky, and it is not merely musical styles. Listen to the intricacies of Tchaikovsky. The passion and the blood that went into that work, especially once compared to Blink 182. There is no comparison.

Perhaps you will never like Tchaikovsky, and I am not a big fan of him myself. However, he will very certainly teach you a lot about what makes music an art, rather than just another venue for easy money. Blink 182 isn't in it for the love or for the creation of something greater than themselves. In fact, they like many others are merely in it for the fame and fortune, and this is where they fall. However, in listening to some classical every now and then, it helps to remind me that music is an art, and I seek out bands that display this. Not what I term as "musical masturbation" that is the likes of Blink 182 and their many look-alike wankers. I have found many that show great depth and quality.

What I feel he actually meant by you being a better person and changing your music tastes is not that he will change your tastes. DirtMcGirt is not here to make you like rap, the Beatles, the stones, or Tchaikovsky. However, he will take a look at your musical likings, and then suggest artists in that area who actually create art, rather than just music.

There's also Switchfoot, Kutless, Relient K, Jars of Clay, Newsboys and POD.

I have listened to Dylan. He is ok. Some is good, some sucks. That's just my current top five. Once again you missed the mark on DMB. " DAVE MATHEWS IS BORING AND HAS NO SOUL." Dirt I really thought you might have known something from this thread, but you lost everything with this sucker comment. He has more soul then the Alabama Tabernacle Choir. Boring? It's obvious you haven't heard anything but radio hits, and yes, "The Space Between" is a little on the boring end. Seriously, this comment couldn't be more off the mark. Isn't it true that you should know about something before pretending you know what you're talking about? Give up your lame and tired DMB arguments of being "boring and soulless." To further back up my points, I'll take this quote from "Guitar World Acoustic" magazine. "As usual, we at GWA are very prouid to feature Dave Matthews on our cover. His most recent album- and first solo venture- is called Some Devil, and while it is hard to associate the still baby-faced Matthews with the Prince of Darkness, it must be acknowledged that he's come up with one hellacious achievement. Everything about the record - the mature lyrical subject matter, the brilliat acoustic and electric playing, the adventuresome arrangements- suggest that Matthews, at age 37, is in a creative zone. He is more articulate then ever, as demonstrated by Tom Moore's excellent interview with the artist. Acoustic music is enjoying a renaissance, and it is a pleasure to see that the man most responsible for this is not only persevering but also discovering new realms of personal expression." So down the crapper goes your "Rock music needs to excite, I want to hear something so distinct that it can change the face of music. DAVE MATHEWS IS BORING AND HAS NO SOUL. I could give you a list a mile long of inovative acoustic artists that are actually furthering music" argument.

Secondly I don't even think you have heard of the Flecktones, Victor Wooten, or have listened to Springsteen. If you think Wooten and/or the flecktones is bad music, man, I'm sorry but you just keep digging yourself a deeper hole. You wouldn't know talent if your front axle was over it.

Sorry, Dirt, but you seem to have misjudged my tastes. I downloaded a couple of songs off The Icarus Line and I felt like my ears were being assaulted. Maybe I do like angry music, but only angry lyrics, but even then, I would describe most of them as depressed rather than angry. What you suggested to me was a guy yelling so I could barely understand him. If I truly wanted that, I would break out my old Slipknot album. I like melodic music, Which is why I like Sevendust and Evanescence, their singers have pleasent voices and I can always understand what they are singing.
Seether and Shinedown's singers aren't quite as good, but they work well with the instrumentals, and I like the way they sound. After thinking, Korn had no business on my top 5. Number 5, I think at this point and time, would be Hoobastank, but I'm sure you've dealt with them at least once before on this thread. The Icarus Line also had some bad song titles, such as "Virgin Velcro" and "Feed Your Cobra a Cat." I tried to find some less offensive sounding songs, but like I said, incoherent yelling, I've seriously heard better music from the crappy local bands that play at the community center. Would you like to try again at both telling me why my music sucks and what I should give a try?

Billy Idol

And of course At The Drive In, classic stuff

falloutboy may not have the best music, but like Story of the Year, they're stage presence is both fun and amazing. i saw them a couple months ago and what they lack in musicality, they make up for in massive amounts of energy.

oh and about thursday. please stop listening to "signals over the air" and pick up full collapse. i am too a huge fan of a7x and i think that thursday's sophomore release is one of the top ten mainstream albums in the past 3 years. full of original, catchy, yet dark riffs and down to the wire, thought provoking lyrics, this album is the epitome of whatever genre you want to put thursday in.

Hey Dirt McGirt, how can you judge other people's taste in music if you're going on tour with Insane Clown Posse and Vanilla Ice?

Ol' Dirty ******* will perform at the 5th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos, a 4 day Insane Clown Posse fan festival. The festival brings together the loyal fans of Insane Clone Posse. In addition to performances, autograph signings, a "live freak show," free tattoos and pro-wrestling matches take place.

Each night of the festival features a performance. Other confirmed artists include Kurupt, Tech N9ne, Wolfpac, DJ Swamp, Esham, Vanilla Ice and the Insane Clown Posse.

so a magezine says dave mathews is good, so he must be right? and if rolling stone gives limp bizkit a perfect score on their new album does that make fred durst the savior of modern music? no.

I never said the flecktones were bad, I respect them but they're not my thing. end of story. Bruce has never made a 100% solid record in his life and is more of a singles artist than anything. I've never heard victor wooton, but i never said anything bad about him, did I?

The thing you're missing here tic tacs is that music is not a 1 dimensional thing. Joe satriani is argueably the greatest living guitar player (not in my opinion, but hey...). However he plays stupid sleazy cock rock. I don't care how great of a musician you are, it's so much more than that. If you thing a song has to be complicated or an artist has to just ooze with guitar playing talent in order to be considered "good" I highly suggest you turn in that bass of yours for a shovel because you don't deserve to play music.

decent list.

Del The Funky Homosapian (guy that raps in Gorillaz) is a far better solo artist. You should also check out his alter ego "Deltron 3030". If you dig that style of rhyming download some tracks by Kool Keith and Dan The Automater as well.

Three Six has put out a ton of weak albums and only has maybe 1 or 2 that are really worth owning.

Bob marly bugs me too, because even though hes a great musician I can never listen to him. considering you were backing generic pop punk just a few short months ago, this is a vast improvement.

BSS is amazing, and everyone here should download a track or two by them. If you like them, you should also check out their other bands Stars and Metric.

Sunny Day is some of the only emo that I can stand. Diary is essential.

The Weakerthans are good, but not great. their new album puts me to sleep, but Left and Leaving is gold.

Pretty Girls Make Graves is the absolute worst **** ever. stupid indie rock flavor of the month riffs and the most obnoxious singer on the face of the planet. I had to actually leave the room when I saw them open for Your Enemies Friends two years ago.
