"Playing back" is a term used for "back players". Basically, these people stay towards the back half of the field through out most of the game. Stereotypically they don't move around that much, and their main job is to lay down cover fire for their teammates up in the front and to get eliminations when they can.

Playing front, which you may have guessed involves "front players" who are people who are in the front of the field. They are supposed to be more agressive because they have to be constantly moving foward and getting the majority of the eliminations.

It's kind of like soccer (or football if you're from Europe). There are people for the back parts of the field (the full backs, goalie etc) and there are people for the front of the field (the fowards halfbacks and sweeper). What your style of play is should help you in determining which type of player you should be.

There are other factors that get involved too. Faster more agile players with smaller profiles tend to be better front players. I'm not saying that is always the case, thats just a common trend. Back players tend to use up more paint than their front player counterparts, so money becomes a factor on which part you play too. Back players tend to have the better ranged markers, where as front players tend to have markers that can shoot a lot.

Hope this helped.
