the m98 is the best gun in the 140 range period it has the shortest lightest trigger in its class you will fire almost twice as fast as any of the comption gun in the 140 range it also has a clear view to sight with and a forgrip here is a review done by pbstar http://www.pbstar.com/tipmod.html

Everyone quit responding to this spyder guy. Lets not start a fight, that is just what he wants. Beat him on the field.

I got a Psycho Ballistics dropforward, and an anti-syphon. Then, you're just about set. Double Triggers are sweet on Tippmann! That was my most recent upgrade, and I love it.

Tippmans are pretty good for the under 150 range, but if you go higher, then I would think that a piranha and spyder (high class spyder) would do much much better. If you do get a tippy, then change the trigger to a double, it'll do much to improve your game. Just whatever u do don't get a pro-carbine (not offending you ppl who have it) this is based on my experience like a year ago. These things are hard to shoot fast with and are heavy as hell, plus I have no idea why, but even tho they are made by tipp (great company) they will curve like mad in the cold. So if you have only 150 to spend.... then go for a tipp and if you've got a lil extra cash, spend it on a new barrel and a double trig.

get an expansion chamber, it really helps in cold weather and it is easy on gas, youll get an extra couple hundred shots with an x-chamber.

TIPPMANNS! TIPPMANNS!
Really, though, Tippy's are the best 'gun to get in the $1-250 range....hear me out. They are by far the most reliable, customizable (not the most customizable, but very good at it), fastest firing (of the other entry-to-mid markers in it's class) marker around for that price range. I can get 5 BPS off of my single trigger, and easily 9 BPS off of my double. With a simple trigger job, you will be shooting over 11-12 BPS, easily! It's accurate (with a new barrel) and can easily keep up with markers in and even out of its class. BUY A TIPPMANN! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
By the way, a couple of great barrels for the 98 and 98 Custom are the Lapco Bigshot (accurate and cheap but loud) which is around 50 bucks, and the Armson Stealth (Accurate, quiet, shoots farther than other barrels because of rifling, but sometimes much more expensive), which is about 85-95 bucks at proshops, or about 65 bucks online. If you have the money, get the Stealth, but if you are on more of a budget, the Bigshot is awesome (or, if you can afford it, get both, the Bigshot for speedball [10"] and the Stealth for woods games [13"]). Hope I helped!

Through my personal experience at playing paintball...i found that my friend spent over 700 dollars (canadian)on upgrading his spyder 2000(I think hes a ******* for upgrading it that much, when he coulda got a much better gun) I played with his gun a couple of games and well...it was very accurate with his barrell, i could get about 7-9 balls per sec but the trigger pull was pretty long with the double trigger too. One dissapointment about the gun was it seemed like a gas hog and it was loud. There would be a big jet of co2 gas coming out of the barrell.
I played with his gun on a cold day and well, it all froze up, and it was breaking paint like crazy. Well i did kinda like his gun seeing it was one of the best in our paintball league but I wouldnt want to buy one because of some negative performance I had with his gun.
As for tippmanns, I have only heard they are very great guns for the price. But i have not actually used one or seen one. I got one for christmas but UPS lost half of the package and well now, pirate paintball is gonna send me anohter M98 Custom silver with a added bonus, a c02 gauge/drop forward.
I also hear they are good for in the cold so thats good for where i live. I just cant wait to get my tippy. :D

To gsupanther:
I strongly advise against buying that package. The goggles and mask that come in the package are less than great, and the mask is the MOST important piece of safety equipment you can buy. I recommend a JT Flex 7 Thermal. Also, with the 20 oz. tank, the 98 Custom is LONG! A great thing to get is a 16 oz. Stubby tank, which is very small so that you can tuck in easily. You don't need the pack and tubes, or the other crap that comes with it. You can get all of this for about 200 bucks, which is less than that package, although it has less stuff. Butttttt, you don't need the other stuff in there anyways, and the mask issue is important as hell. It sickens me all the times I see a newbie lured into buying a cheap mask that fogs and breaks, it's just not safe! PLEASEEEEE take all this into consideration!

Quick note about the above response:
The JT nVader is a great mask---if it's thermal. The one in the package isn't, thats the only reason I recommend against it. You could get thermal lenses, but they're a b*tch to install.

A tippman, spyder, or piranah will all be great. The reason I didn't get a tippman was mostly because I didn't like the feel when I tried it out, it was too long, that and a bit heavy. A spyder, tippman, or piranah will all be very reliable because they are so simple. If you have a basic understanding of how they work maintainance won't be a problem. I would reccomend trying both out and seeing which one feels better. THe tippman does have a nice stock pull, but the spyders trigger can be made much shorter very easily.
No matter what marker you get make your first upgrade the barrel, and the next one a revvy or other motorized hopper.

There's no question about it. The Tippmann 98 Custom is THE most customizable, upgradable, reliable, and durable markers on the market for its cost, period.
