I have 2 Altec Lansing speakers and a sub, the speakers are nice, and the sub definitely gets the job done.

how bout:
Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 Personal Audio System -RETAIL (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=36-119-105&depa=0)
JBL Creature II 3-piece Speakers w/ Subwoofer(Gray) -RETAIL (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=36-101-010&depa=0)
the harmon kardons are made by jbl. i figure jbl kicks *** at car audio so they prolly have plenty good pc setups.

Klipsch are the best speakers you'll get pretty much.
But you'll also pay for that.
Altec Lansing and anything by Creative Labs are good.

The ones Mal posted are better deals than what you were looking at, because they come with a sub.

ill go with the altec lansing, i had mine for 2+ years before the sub made any funny noises, and i played the hell out of it. if you want headphones, Zalman makes a nice 5.1 surroundsound set

I've got a Creative Slim 2200 (I think that's the number?). Never given me any problems for the two or so years I've had 'em...They sound pretty damn good, are small (except for the sub, which is something like 1 square foot), and are extremely sexy looking .
Oh, and they were about $40 !

I have this bad boy (http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=239144). Not too expensive, not that powerful but they're nice. Before I go to college I'm thinking about either getting a new set or 2 more speakers. And the volume button is great since I have my speakers set up in a surround sound type way.

Yup, that's almost the same thing I have...The subby is the same, but my speakers are single-driver that is made of some kind of rubbery plasticish stuff :|

Creative I-trigue 2.1
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=51094&item=5127033593&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
frequency response down to 30hz...not bad :wink2:
I too am now looking for speakers for my laptop. I'm looking into the JBL Creature II 3 piece speakers (http://www.provantage.com/buy-7hrmn00j-jbl-creature-ii-grey-3pc-powered-speakers-harman-multimedia-creatureiigry-shopping.htm) and was wondering if theyre any good. About how good a sound will these put out do you think? And more importanntly will these plug into my laptop?

If your laptop has an audio out or headphone jack, you can use most any speakers.

I've got these and love them!!
They really crank!
http://www.alteclansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=ATP3&sID=2
I keep the sub under my desk and it rolls out the bass like thunder.
I can't say enough about how good they really sound. My friends are amazed at the power and look around the room for where it's coming from. When I show them, their jaws just drop!
Check them out for yourself. I bet you get'em too!
Let us know!

Are any Altec Lansings good? I'm cheap and looking for some speakers + subwoofer around $40. Theres AVS 500 5 piece speakers (http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?prodBlockOID=536961650&cm_ven=Froogle&cm_cat=Tech&cm_pla=Peripheral&cm_ite=Peripheral&BV_SessionID=@@@@0696530465.1097624916@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjadcmkjdgmkgcfngcfkmdffjdfgh.0) on clearance i found, are these any good?
Then theres a bunch of other 2.1 Altec Lansing for about the same price. Will i notice a big difference in sound from the $40-50 ones and the $60-70 ones?
I'm basically looking to play music over them, and i just want good sound and bass.

Logitech Z2200. After rebate from Amazon, I got them for 60bucks. These speakers are nice and crisp and the bass really kicks.
