I think Witt means a backyard thing where you bring your own paint, air, and gun. He means the field...

Witt, my friends & I recently did this exact same thing; We built a field back in the woods where it is free to play all you have to do is bring your own stuff.
Types Of Bunkers:
Tires (Which we found in the woods). First we took metal poles, which we also found in the woods, and put them between a foot and 3 feet into the ground, depending on how long the pole was. Then we put the tires around them, and filled the cracks with mud(from rain) and Cinderblocks (which we also found in the woods).
Also, you could make them out of Logs piled up on top of eachother. We made them out of a bunch of thin pine trees, since they were layin all over the place.
If there are high hills over looking the field, then you can dig a bunker right into the hills. However, i don't recommend digging hills on flat land, because you can get trapped in em when the "enemy" is coming.
Remember: You can dig a ditch behind any of the bunkers (Tire or stick or whatever), a foot or so deep.
That's basicall what we did, and it works great. After you play the first time, you'll see what else you need to add/take away.

Whatever ditches or trenches you dig, keep them shallow, 2 feet at the very most. Even 2 feet is enough for you to blow a kneecap or sprain an ankle if you go running full speed and dropping into one that you dont see. That's why you dont see huge trench systems at most fields, safety hazard and all :)

Dont forgot your 6 page iron clad "no liability" waiver
My friends and I have made several fields behind my house. 3 of our own and then another course that another paintballer made. It's great! One of the courses had a castle and ruins in it, and what we call a giant soup can. The castle ruins were part of an old bridge that used to run across the creek. We just went in with some clippers, cut some trails, and it's turned into quite an awesome course. Lots of little secrets routes to sneak up on the oppenent.

Old pallets make great walls for bunkers. Even though there are lots of cracks in them it's actually really hard to hit someone in them and easy to find a hole to poke your barrel through. (Just dont get your barrel stuck when your getting bunkered from the side!)
I have my own co2 fill station & chrono. We all bought red & blue bandanas armbands and flags.
