Yes, SP is looking to improve the current Shocker and I believe protos have been made.
With advances in solenoid technology, I believe it was a Japanese company, has come up with a series of solenoids that is smaller, handle higher pressure and more reliable for industrial use.
I heard SP designed the new Shocker so it can be smaller, faster, more effiecent with the solenoid technology.
From what I understand is, it's suppose to be still closed bolt at a little higher pressure but still maintain it's stable shooting platform.

Although I'm not a Smart Parts/Shocker fan, I'm glad they have made steps to update the Shocker.
I have no idea about a release date, nor how far along SP has come with the new and improved Shocker....I don't even know if they are even calling it a Shocker, maybe something else.
I do know the Gardner's are smart buisness people and know they have to make something smaller, lighter and more effiecent for their "flag-ship" gun.

I read this at PBNation by CockerTown. Looks like Smart Parts is making a better Shocker?
