Alright, Ive been thinking about something lately. This is kind of a rant to be prepared...

Why does everyone in PB seem to segregate themselves. What I am mainly referring to hear is the controversy of woods versus speedball. Now Im not trying to make a V.S. Thread, and I know I will most likely get flamed by some idiots, but why do people care so much? I mean, paintball is paintball. If you dont like a certain type then dont play it, but dont diss it. It seems now that people care more about style and "coolness" in paintball now more than anything. I mean come on, designer headbands, tailfeathers, etc. It seems to many people are being influence by the cool thing now instead of buying good equpment. And I also wanna ask this: Whats wrong with woods/ recball? Now, I have been playing for four years. I have played, woods, scenario, and mostly speedball. Lately though I have had an urge to go back and play in the woods. It gives a certain aspect to paintball that isnt in speedball (thats for another thread though). I mean, theres all these speedball kids with all there "woods sucks" crap, but I dont think these kids realize that if it werent for woods, then there wouldnt be any speedball. What I am doing is urging everyone to go out and give every kind of ball a try. Dont go in with the attitude that "man this sucks, Im gunna own all these newbs", because in truth, your probably the newb for dissing this kind of paintball. By the way, Im not some rambo wanna be out int he woods with a tricked out "sniper rifle". I play primarily speedball and shoot a Timmy.

I just want to see what everyones thoughts on this are. Peace, and keep ballin'.

Lemme be the first to say; I'm a tire.

Anyways, I prefer speedball, but woods is cool.

You're right. We're all Paintballers. We all need to get along. Some players are too concerned about style. I'll admit it, I care about how I look on the field. But I have everything else taken care of. If I had to choose between playing great and looking great, the choice would be a no brainer. Playing great is much more important.

Keep the hate out, guys, we're all in this together. If you want to let it out, go to General Paintball Talk over at PBN and take a look at the MAP (Mothers Against Paintball) thread.

:biglaugh:

Disclaimer: I was using that reference only as a joke. Please don't go over there and make us look bad as Paintballers.

Part of the misunderstanding you're talking about is the fact that a great many people that post here and a great many people that play the game are under the age of 18-20. Most have only been playing the last 5 years or so. Most grew up seeing Hyperball as the "in" thing to play. They see flashy jerseys, sponsorship, fast markers and a fast paced game and equate that with "cool". What they fail to understand is that hyperball is a relatively "new" innovation in the world of paintball.

Only 10 years ago most major tournaments were played on woods fields. Going back 5 years ago and beyond you could argue this as well. The "kids" of today don't even realize all the development and Trial and Error that's occurred to get them to the current point where you have the Shockers, Intimidators, Matrixes, E-Cockers of today.

Even today, the vast majority of field revenue is from people playing recball/woodsball and the money these people spend on paint and equipment. From a business standpoint, a paintball store will sell more Model 98's and Spyders at the same profit margin as they will Intimidators or Trix's. Just because a Timmy costs more doesn't mean the store makes more on it. Recball players who buy hordes of paint, buy equipment and generally seem to be a little older and stay in the sport a little longer are what enable the stores and fields to sponsor the teams that kids find so alluring. My private games where I pull in 100 of my co-workers generates a lot more revenue for the field than 100 walk-on hyperball kids will.

It's a shame that many of today's players don't know the roots of their sport and know that it came from the woods. They also don't realize that many of the tactics that make a successful woodsball player also make a very successful tournament player. The ability to get small, move smart, lane, hit angles and move isn't unique to speedball. I also tend to see much more honest players in the woods than on a hyperball field. It seems like the newer players expect to cheat while playing...they see nothing wrong with wiping, and losing hits. In the woods I actually see people call themselves out when they get hit. Generally speaking, there's a lot more poor sportsmanship on a hyperball field and that elitist attitude carries over to here. Good, bad or otherwise those are my observations.

I agree. Although i like speedball more, i still like woods. actually, i play woods more often then speedball because it can be played almost everywhere. All i need for paintball is a marker, tank, mask, a t shirt and jeans. and sometimes a pod pack on the speedball field. I see no point in jersys, hats, paintball pants, and stuff like that unless you are a hardcore pro paintball player.
