im getting a tippy. I had a choice between a Custom98 or a Tl plus. Im going with the tippy because i hear alot of good things about them. But it is your decision...

if you want an answers from different viewpoints, you should ask in the blowback section. everyone in here owns an m98 so their answer would be biased.

get a tippmann, i dont have either, but still, a tippmann can be found for less than $125 and it is an awesome, accurate, durable, and a highly upgradable gun.

the number 1 way for your friend to decide which one he wants is to try them out. i mean go to wherever yaw play and if some has one ask if you can shoot it.

Here is what I said to a guy who didn't know whether to buy a C98 or a shutter:
To me looks aren't as important as performance. As a spyder owner I can tell you that Tippmanns fit and finish is top quality. I would highly recommend the Tippmann Custom 98 as a first marker. IMO it is one of the best markers out there in any price range. There is no limit to how far you can customize the marker. Or you can leave it stock and still have a reliable accurate (With upgraded barrel) marker that will out live your next two markers. The CVX valve is wonderful with CO2 and you don't have to worry about the internals freezing. You can drop the marker off of a cliff and it still will probably work. You can touch a spyder the wrong way and the air hose with fall off (I am not kidding). Purchase the 98. It will save you money, and a lot of hassle. Not to mention it outperforms the Spyder even if the tippy is ugly.
D*mn, I should be a moderator! LOL

yeah, but lets see you try to field strip a tippman.
personally, i like spyders better. They're very light weight, they're more accurate right out of the box(from my experience), and the list goes on.
One thing i don't like about the 98 is that the grip is too far forward for me.
I like how the expansion chamber on spyders is real close to the trigger so it makes a smaller target and i can aim better. that's just me.
its all about how you want to play. they both have their good point and bad points. its self preference.

Tippmann c98:
Compact, Strong, Easily upgraded, pretty good price, looks okay, comes with a cvx valve
Kingman Tl+:
Light, Very Easily upgraded, good price, looks pretty good, has a rear cocking bolt, comes with x-chamber, double trigger, vertical feed, sight rail/beavertail, tournament locking velocity adjuster, lots of easy drop in parts, quick strip pin
the kingman is more of a package deal, i like my spyder, but sometimes i kinda wonder if the c98 wouldnt have been better, i like the way it feels so solid, the spyders feel kinda flimsy when you first hold them, but after you play a game you realize how strong they really are.
Kingman Spyder Tl plus: $124.99 www.actionvillage.com
Tippmann Custom 98: $123.99 www.actionvillage.com
the choice is yours but i hope i helped you on your decision.
