Okay, I got an Air America Vigilante today and I need to buy some guages to set it up/adjust it. I don't think I do but my dad thinks so.
Just gassing up my gun and slowly turning the adjuster until I get about 285 over a chronograph is all I need to do right? No guages required?

Yes, adjusting the reg to the desired speed is fine.
If you have a blowback:
I would recommend putting the gun's velocity adjuster right about in the middle first. This keeps the spring from being too tight and requiring more gas to recock, as well as too loose, and requiring more pressure to shoot. You may also want to invest in a spring pack and try out each of them with the reg. At which point, just put the reg somewhere in the middle, chrono, and adjust accordingly. (You can also put the reg with the lowest output and adjust up, but it might take a lot more time)
If you have an electro:
Put the dwell right in the middle or a little longer. If it's longer, it would require more gas at a lower pressure, but it keeps you from overpressurizing your gun. Safety at the cost of efficiency. Then set your reg all the way down. Adjust slowly up, chronoing as you go. A gauge would allow you to operate at the optimal pressure (indicated in the manual), but it's only necessary for the highest efficiency. Setting by dwell is fine, but may be more inefficient. (hopefully the optimal pressure and the middle of the dwell together produce just the right velocity).
Both:
Make sure you fire at least three shots each time you chrono to make sure the reg seats well. Once you get it set somewhere close, you will need to cycle the gun 100 or more times to break in the reg and make sure it seats well, then start all over again. You should also do this after cleaning the regulator. (about every 4 weeks of use) A gauge just lets you know if the adjustment gets knocked around, or for quick adjustments when you know the desired pressure. If you do get one, make sure you note the pressure after you adjust it fully the first time. Subsequent times, adjust by the gauge, remembering to shoot three shots after adjustments to clear gas, especially if you turn it down. Many people don't shoot out the regulated gas, adjust it too far down, then have to start over again.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Good luck!
