View Full Version : Using Ortho Elastics...

On Model98.net I saw someone use orthodontic elastics to replace their sear spring. I guess this silences the sear spring ping. I tried this, but I guess it did'nt put enough pressure on sear because it would sometimes not catch. Has anyone else done this? Should I just put more than one elastic in there to put more pressure on it?
Thx...

I have it done on Mine and I use two because I didnt trust one ortho bands sometimes snap easily. Make sure you carry spares If you do this mod or bring your sear spring to the field just in case both snap. Always keep whatever you take out of yourgun and bring it with you incase one of your mods or new parts fails.

Maybe you need to use the stronger rubberbands.

if you want to make it quieter, just put eclectrical tape around the sear spring, instead of using rubber bands

personally im not into the whole ortho bands deal. yes i know i have an A-5 but most of my friends own 98Cs and they have all at one point (or still are) used the rubber band mod. some of them dont like it because the rubber bands can tend to stretch after time so the sear wont always catch or they will break. while some of my friends dont mind replacing thier ortho bands from time to time. personally id rather not do the ortho mod so i dont always have to wait til my gun double fires before i know i need to replace them id rather just put something more permanent in so i dont need to worry about it, but thats just my :twocents:

i had it in for a while but make sure to change them. That is absolutly crucial cause one time i was doing basic maintnence and streched them and they snapped very easily not even with all that much force. BE CAREFUL

Haha, yeah I guess I did get told, but I just put the original sear spring back in and put rubber tubing around it... So its all good now...
Thx for the replies

Hello everybody!! I have to agree with most everybody in this post, the ortho mod doesn't really make a big difference. I currently, is using the mod. It just seems better, or i can tell the differnce. Also, i_lovesniping, the ortho bands that u most likly want to use is the 3/16" one. they are really small. the bigger ones, they dont put a lot of tension on and the gun just goes ploop. Also, its always a good idea to double up on it, just in case one breaks. Peace.

if you want to fix the "spring ping" then find some heat shrink tubeing slide it over the spring and heat ONLY the edges of the tubeing. this creates a buffer to dissipate sound.

I used the ortho rubberbands to make a lighter snappier trigger, I didnt care about the "trigger ping"

ok cause I was using 1/4 size now im using 3/16. I put a pen spring in my triggar and replaced the sear spring with ortho elacstics. What other mods will increace my triggar speed.

polsih your trigger area, it helps a lot.
Oh i was think if you got a drill bit jsut bigger that the holes and then ground down the end sides so itll fit in then put it where the sear rests, you then just did a more permanant version of the tape thing, what do you guys think.

I think it would take a lot of trial and error to get everything to sit right. It's also a rather permanent mod b/c you have to drill out the recievers to accept the new pin that you're making. This means that somewhere down the road if you don't want it, or if it doesn't work out you are basically up the proverbial creek without a paddle.
I kind of have a thing for mods that I can undo if they don't work out.

Conen I think A-5 Best is more talking about a receiver pin like this.
Here you have a stock receiver pin:
_________
_________
The new modified pin:
__--------__
_________
__--------
Same effect as putting heat shrink or tape over it. Its a new pin that wont have tape to get oiled up and make your marker go full auto. This would not require any drilling to the receivers cause the part where the pin slides into the receivers is still the same it just raises where the sear rests making it easier to trip. I think eryk did this to his gun he will know more about it then I do.

or by trial and error you could obtain a few extra sear springs, stretch them out, and do what vicious666 said, heat ONLY the ends of the heat shrink tubing that you put around the sear spring
I have an r/t and heated up the whole tubing on accident, but not that much, and it hasnt casued any problems, no noticable ping, but again just for your sake I would recommend to ONLY heat the ends of the tubing.
another thing you can do is change the trigger slider spring
that's the silver slider on the back of your trigger, use a toothpick or a very skinny screwdriver to push the pin that retains the trigger slider....then change the spring that's under the trigger slider to a lighter spring....not too light, you may need to do trial and error, because you may experience trigger resetting problems if it is too light....that made my trigger pull insanely light for a mech (before I r/t'd it)
