save it as .bmp, open it in paint, save as...... Then choose what you want to save it as. whats wrong with a .bmp anyway?
EDIT: oh wait, is that what u were trying to do?

the thing with it only saving a pic as a bitmap is a bug thats been in IE since.....well.....since at least IE 4. Not sure what causes it. Its not a spyware or anything like that causing it, its just something in the IE programming that doesnt translate the image correctly in some websites.
Use a different browser in sites that have that problem, when you wanna save pics from them. SOMETIMES (not always) you can right click it, copy the picture, and then paste it into a picture editor and save it from there, as whatever format.
the thing with the gif is because gif is not what I would call a "universal format" for lack of a technical term. its bitmapping is different than a lot of other formats. Basically, when you save one on the internet it will only save as bitmap (edit- errrr Gif I mean), or an allfile. at least in my experience.
Yeah, it's a known IE bug. I THINK I saw a fix somewhere (not too sure though.) You might wanna search google/the MS KB.
I recommend you switch browsers though. My personal recommendation would be Firefox (http://getfirefox.com).
edit: see this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810978) for the Microsoft KB entry with a possible fix.
