Here's one way to get newbies over their fear of getting hit. A friend of mine did this while he was reffing. He put a pod of 100 rounds on the 50 and lined everyone up on the field and said "Whoever gets that pod can keep the rounds." So one newbie, gunless, would start from one end and try for the pod, while everyone else shot from fixed positions at the one "running man." It worked, and the rest of the day, he said, was "the most exciting game day I'd ever reffed"

Tips, eh? Move around a lot, and try to keep your position unknown, that way you get a good advantage. Be stealthy and quiet, and dont shoot just for the heck of it, only shoot at a person to get them out, and make dure it is a reasonable shot, too.

lay down in a firing lane were no bunker coverage stops you

Make a huge flanking maneuver using the most dense and hard-to-traverse terrain. They'll never see it coming.

dont over extend at the start of the game to avoid being surounded
dont shoot people on your team! this happened to a friend of mine and nobody talked to the kid that did it for the rest of the day
dont get the "sniper" mentality that longer barrels are the best and you can eliminate someone with one shot every time.
watch the more experienced players example: if you see some guy with a nice gun and he is owning everyone and looks like he plays a bunch/knows the feild ask him for tips/what to do
Bring lots of water/gatorade to the feild you can get dehydrated rather easily playing paintball

This to me is the most important part of paintball.
Assess the situation(where is the other team).
Think of a way to accomplish your task(elimination of the other team).
Do things based on thought not instinct(instinct is powerfull but intellect will keep you alive).
See how the other team reacts to certain situations and use this to your advantage.
Ok now the general stuff:
Pop Shooting: this is by far the most valuable and one of the most difficult skills to learn. It's very simple and you can practice it regulary. Hide behind an obstruction and practice poping out and shooting a target at about 25-30 yards (typical engagement, correct me if I'm wrong). This will keep you alive and take your opponents out quick. This is what the pro's do to win.
Move: I can't stress this enough. Too many people won't advance up a field once the paint is flying. Learn to move, provide cover fire and when to ask for cover fire and if your lucky you can actually get behind the enemy, and let me tell you. They don't like beeing shot in the back.
Sliding: Some people may not do this much but I reccomend getting some knee pads for this one. It is possible to slide 10+ feet on your knees to a bunker on grass with a running start. I can't mention the number of times i've saved my own patutie doin this one. It takes time to get it down, but is invaluable when you do.
Don't be afraid: If your really into it you won't even realize you've been hit. I've had times where I was hit 3 times and didn't know it. Adrenaline is a great pain killer. Paintballs do hurt, and bounces are a mother but it's part of the game and you get used to it.
TEAMWORK: talk to your team, listen to your team. if you work as a team you will have a much better chance of staying in the game and winning. Ask anyone who has ever played paintball. If you don't have teamwork you've already lost.
And most importantly HAVE FUN, that's why your playing right? If not your in the wrong place.
See you on the field.
