You can do that but you need an adaptor. Expect only about 15-20 shots off of a little 12 gram. I would spend the money and get a tank. Much less of a hassle and you will get many more shots.

You can get 800 shots from a 12oz tank.

12 grams are those little round silver canister type things that contain co2. They're a one time use thing, you can't unscrew them once they are screwed into your gun or else all the co2 will shoot out. You need an adapter to hold the 12grams and to screw them into the gun in the same place as where a regular tank would. I'll try to find you a picture so you'll know what we're talking about.

And here is one of the many different types of 12 gram adapters, also called a "quick change".

Dont waste time with buying an adapter and then using 12 grams, you'll only get frustrated and it won't be much fun getting to shoot around 12 shots before having to change cartridges.

Your hopper should empty before your air tank, assuming both start out full :)

Spend the money, get a 12oz or a 16oz tank, trust me you'll be alot happier. What I did with my piranha was get a 16oz and put an on/off valve on it (The guys at the shop I bought it from did this for me). It's served me great so far, and I get plenty of shots. Usually go out for a day of play. Have it full at the beginning and usually (all depends on how much I shoot) it can last me all day. Except on days where I go nuts and fire left and right hehehe.

Keep us updated, and everyone here is very helpful so dont be afraid of asking questions!

A quick change and some spare 12 grams can come in very handy from time to time. My friends and I play a lot of outlawball so the rule of thumb is you can use only as much as you can carry with you since there are no open paintball shops or anything like that off in the woods. And so, should your main tank run out of air or break or should anything happen to it, it's always nice to know you won't have to sit on the side all day because you haven't got air. Sure they don't hold much, and people not accustomed to playing stock might have a little trouble with it at first, but a quick change and some 12 grams can keep you in the game, and thats whats important. :)

Also people who play pump like phantom players, often times use a quick change and 12grams or a small tank like say, 4oz.

You are going to want to oil your gun before firing it.

Not sure what you meant by that last post, but to oil the gun what you do is: Put 2-4 drops of oil in the place where you screw the tank into the gun, right into the little hole the air goes into. Then screw your tank on and fire the gun (without paintballs) somewhere between 20-30 times to fully cycle the oil through the gun's internals. Make sure to NOT have the barrel on when you do this. Having it on will get oil on the inside of it which would probably affect accuracy etc, and be a major pain to clean out.

However in the end, do not go for a quick change adapter, just pay somewhere around 25 bucks for a 16oz co2 tank or maybe 20 some odd bucks for a 12oz co2 tank. These will be a better investment than constantly buying packs of 12gram co2 cartridges cause eventually you'll surpass the price of a refillable tank with tons of wasted 12grams that cant be refilled.
I recommend a 16oz, its not as big as a 20, not as small as a 12, its actually shorter but fatter than a 12 and so it helps you get closer to your gun and allows for more shots, while being a little bit lighter than a 20oz. You'll be very thankful in the long run, and being able to fill your 16oz at the beginning of the day and then play till the end (depending on how long you play and shoot obviously) of the day and not having to refill or only fill it once more.

12gram cartridges are really only needed for paintball pistol side-arms like a PT Extreme, not a big main gun like your spyder or the like.

*thinks about getting an angel with a quick change adapter*
