A solenoid is a electronically controlled valve that directs the airflow. The simplest example would be a solenoid in the dishwasher that turns the water on and off.

Correct, that is the simplest way to put it. Also keep in mind it is one of the more expensive and complex parts found in a paintball marker, so take care of it and be careful when running a maintenance check on one.

What kind of maintenance does the solenoid on the Ion need?

Generally you take out the parts, clean them off, get out the "gunk", regrease, and put it back together.

Depends on the make of the solenoid.

We're talking about Ion solenoids.

So you disassemble the solenoid and clean it?
