View Full Version : upgrades for stock 98 custom?

I have a stock 98 custom with a 20oz catalina tank. Just went out to the field yesterday for the first time to play, and I realized that the accuracy on the stock barrel sucks big time. My paint would go curving left or right.... couldn't mark anyone on the field because they were too far away (about 50-75 feet) and my paint would not go where I aim. I'm thinking about buying a double trigger and a new barrel.

I'm looking for a barrel upgrade (for about 50 dollars) that I can buy to improve my accuracy. I have looked into the J&J Ceramic series 14" model, and it looks like something that I can afford (based on Ebay's prices). Any other barrels that you guys can recommend for about 50 dollars? (I shoot cheap /generic paints by the way..so I'm looking for a barrel that is relaxing about the paint's bore size)

Ok, now about the air system. I want to improve the consistency of my shots..but I don't have much money to spend right now..so should I:

1. Buy Genuine Tippman Accessory Expansion Chamber (about $40) to use with my CO2 tank

or

2. Buy a cheap HPA tank ($60) .. such as this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36287&item=7146063568&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I'm just starting out with paintball, so I don't want to spend 300+ dollars on a single marker yet. Right now all I play is scenario maps (woods ball). Eventually I'll get into speedball and buy a faster marker, but right now I'll just stick to a 98 custom to start out.

Thanks for any tips.

I have a J&J and I think its a great barrel. I would highly reccomend it. It depends on the hpa or the expansion chaimber tho. If you live close to a field/place that can fill ur hpa tank, by all means buy it. But if you can't like me, get the expansion chaimber, it does a good job.

Actually I think I will forget about HPA for now and stick with CO2 since I'm new to paintball. I've been reading on model98.net, and it seems that people prefer the palmer-pursuit Stabilizer/regulator over an expansion chamber.

The expansion chamber runs for 40 bucks, how much is the palmer-pursuit stabilizer + its required accessories going to cost? (is this the one for 98 custom: http://www.palmer-pursuit.com/images/Stab/female-stabilizer-m98-kit.jpg )

Is the regulator worth it when used with a CO2 tank though?

it depends on what kind of reg u get from them

for a vertical (male) stabalizer it is $88 at http://www.countypaintball.com/product_description.asp?item=2469 and u will need to install a vertical adapter $20 http://www.countypaintball.com/product_description.asp?item=1033

palmers regs work very well for co2

How does the Palmers regulator look when it's fitted on a marker?

Also, how can I get a gauge separately for the regulator?

i dont really know if u need a gauge

The palmers reg and vert adaptor will cost you over $100. I'd rather spend that money on HPA.

First off about the barrels, get either a J&J Ceramic (I have one and like it), a Lapco Bigshot (my cousin has one and I actually like it better in some respects), or a CP one piece (I've never used one of these but they have always been recommended to me). These three barrels are the best low-price-range ones that I know of.

As far as the air consistency, get your tank anti-siphoned. If you still are not getting enough consistency to satisfy yourself, then you can think about getting a palmers stabilizer. The A/S will make the Co2 behave just like it is being run through an expansion chamber, only for less money. It shouldn't cost you hardly anything to get an A/S installed. The people at my local shop installed it for free after I bought it from them. Even if they did charge you it shouldn't be more than $10-$15 and that would be cheaper than an x-chamber.

Hope this helps you some.

I want to stick with CO2 for now due to cost issues (it would be cheaper for me to replace CO2 tanks than to replace HPA tanks).

I don't think I'll mess around with a regulator until I know my marker well enough.

So the anti-siphon should keep liquid CO2 out of my marker, but it's only for that tank and if that CO2 tank breaks, then I'd lose the antisiphon too?

You only have to replace HPA tanks every 15 years, so that really shouldn't be a factor. Usually you will not break a tank either CO2 or HPA. You may blow a burst disk but that is usually the only problem you will have unless you are throwing your tanks at boulders or something.

If I get a HPA tank, it'd put me over my 100 dollars upgrade cap. With the 100 dollars, I intend to get:

1. J&J Ceramic 14" barrel ($40)
2. GTA Double Trigger ($20)
3. Anti-siphon the tank ($20)
4. Rocket Cock II ($20)

I'm getting the Rocket Cock II to keep dirt and stuff out of my rear bolt because the last time I played the gun got some dirt in it and my bolt kept on jamming. Otherwise than those upgrades above, I don't think I can afford to spend more money to upgrade because in the end my upgrades may cost more than the marker itself.

Alright, You should have mentioned the $100 cap, would have made things easier. From the previous posts it looked like you were willing to spend over $100 on a reg and VA. A/S the tank is definately a good choice then.

Also, you can find J&J ceramics as low at $30 if you look around. You may also want to consider the Dye Xcel which you can find on sale for as low as $20. I've owned both a J&J and the Xcel and the Xcel is a larger bore barrel so it is less picky with paint.
