Nope, it's not a must. It's nice but you can get by without it!

all you need is anti siphon co2 and THATS IT

You should get on/off if you plan on using Co2 and bottom line MaxFlow, I don't think it's such a big deal with vertical regs... am I wrong?

But, I use my on/off all the time with vertical reg and compressed air. Just makes it much easier to take the tank off of the gun. Just turn the air off, pop a few dry shots and you are set.
