Well i am thinking about applying to an engineering division of collage and would like to try to engineer something this summer. When i was think about things i realized that paintball is a pretty new sport so many new products could be made. Basically i am asking you, as paintball players, the help me help you. The question is what would you like in the sport that does not already exist, or could be improved with my help. Keep in mind that the tools i have a pretty basic but if the idea is good enough i will invest in making it work.
PLease be mature in your request and be reasonable. Do NOT make this into a joke, i am only trying to hel out the sport.
THANX

IMO, way to much effort and time is going into making these guns faster and faster and faster... the problem with that is that no one on the planet can pull that fast so there really isn't a point to a gun that shoot 50bps. Everyone always says my gun can shoot bla bla bps... well great for you...too bad you only pull 12.
I would really like to see guns become more efficient and consistent. I want my 45/45 to last me the day on 1 fill. I want +/- 0 over the chrono everytime, all the time. +/- 2 isn't good enough for me. So design me the better reg system ;)
as far as new ideas to innovate the sport... well I'm not sure. I'm sure something will come up but I think someone should focus on making what we have better and more dependable.
Good luck!

More consistent paintballs and a less expensive maunfacturing process. I would love to be able to buy a case of decent quality paint for $10 or less. I would also agree with Jaster on the effiency issue.
Lower paint prices would certainly open up the number of folks playing paintball. More participants will only benefit the Sport.

A "new" pump marker. That, or a small, 13 ci, 4500 psi HPA tank.

^^^^^^^^^ YEAH!!! Maybe a paintball gun that can shoot a full 75 yards going exsactly strait. Like he said (sniper rifle).

I'd like better, more consistent paintballs in terms of shape and center of gravity. Think of ways to cheapen the sport, especially the price of paint. The search for speed in guns has gotten way out of hand so I don't want faster markers.

Everything said about the Paintballs. One of the main reasons people are driven from the sport are due to the outragous cost of paint! Did you know that for a case of 2000 paintballs, you're buying each paintball for 3 cents! 3 cents for a paintball!

Cheaper ways of making paint, all the way.
That's the #1 reason I don't play very often.

Well first of the efficiency idea: the problem with that is that even under ideal conditions (no friction) You still need a good amount of air to get that ball to move at 300 fps.
Now about the sniper rifle: With the current paintballs on the market no such gun is possible. This is because wind will always affect the shot but on a larger issue it's how paintballs are made. Paintballs are not entirely filled with paint. I gets pretty complex in terms of the physics of why this is important, but to some it up throw a water balloon and see how it travels in the air Then blow extra air into the water balloon so it is about 10% air and 90% water you will see that the balloon wobbles in the air when thrown this is what happens with a paintball.
It is far easier for the guys at smart parts to make a better reg that what these big paintball companies do all day try to make the best products. If you guys want a better reg or better efficiency i'm not going to lie, i do not have the skills nor the equipment to deal with those issues.
What i can do for the sport is try to make something like a more reliable paint grenade that isn't 5 bucks. Or a device that would help people load their pods after a game. Ideas like this are realistic for me. The parts of the sport that have already been highly developed: air (tanks, regs, bolts ect...), barrels, Anit-chop eyes, boards, hoppers, goggles, and many other things like these have already be Highly developed that's why we have markers that can shoot 20 BPS without chopping paint. If you give me something that i can do without having to go to million dollar research centers i will do it.
THANX for the input great ideas they are just problems that are to large for me to tackle.
If you guys have any ideas like the one i talked about post them i would love to try to make them happen.
Thanks again

Just scrap the "paint" inside the ball.
test out different liquids for...
1.) Does it do damage the eyes, ears, mouth, skin?
2.) Is it readily available? (price)
3.) Does it stain?
This should create cheaper paintballs if you can get Companies to use your formula.

Easy pod loading= Cut off the top of a soda bottle and use it as a funnel. ;)

to make this post ok, I think accuracey/consistancey could still be improved alot

1) Find a way to produce paintballs more cheaper but at same quality
2) Find a way to make high pressure air tanks more cheaper
3) Find away to make more electronic markers co2 friendly at high rates of fire.
4) find a way to defeat the ion;)

That's what I was going to do for my senior project as an Aerospace Engineer...but I'm an Accounting major now.

HPA tanks are more expensive...because you will pay more. What is the difference in production costs for a steel co2 tank, and a steel hpa? Probably a few dollars if that. I know that fiber wrapped is the way to go, but that isn't much more expensive to make, but you and I will pay the money to have that.
I say, try to develop a new pneumatic system, something that will be decently efficient, but operate slightly different than any other marker. Maybe even smaller. I want a tiny marker.

This might be more attainable for you:
Create a drop-in trigger kit for guns that converts them from spring return to magnetic return. I know this exists for several markers already, but I would like to see roller-bearing triggers for the freestyle, proto matrix and DM5 that are adjustable magnetic return. So far I haven't seen any.
I suppose you could also do custom milling modifications to markers that no one has thought of before.

the touch pad thing was done already, I saw it in the latest issue of... I think it was PB2X- may have been facefull or something else, it some crazy looking gun, it has this backpack attatched to your back and that holds paint and air and it comes to this gun thru a tube, u should read the article, its pretty crazy

I was thinking possibly to take some weight out of these bulky electronic hoppers. Possibly have them run on one 9 volt and have a step-up coil or something instead. I dont know just bouncing some ideas.

Cheaper paint. Easiest way I can think of is create your own formula That uses cheaper ingredients. So Say a bag of gelatin costs $5 and makes a case of paint. But a bag Of Ingredient-x costs $3 and makes the same case of paint. Well you just cut the cost of a case by $2 whole bucks my man.
Other idea would be to use a more efficient motor in the Halo so it doesent eat my batteries
the only thing that really i hate about paintball is the price...things have to be cheaper...way overpriced for a paintball.....pods...and other stuff...expensive in general...i dont like it...i dont like having to spend 50$ on a new god damn trigger...its not that hard to make and doesnt have that many components...cheaper tanks....paintballs...barrels.( wayyyy overpriced for a little tube of steel or aluminum)...stuff like that....and include a god damn charger when you buy a electro gun plz.

I would also love cheaper paintballs. But in my mind paintballs are not that expensive it's that stores or fields require you to buy "field Paint" for 100 bucks a case when you can buy the same paint online for 50 a case i think this is the problem with paint. The thing with barrels is that the are machined very precisely to don't know how much this cost but i believe it's pretty pricey. I also think that a good deal of improvements could be made on electric hoppers. I thought of making a rechargeable battery like in a cordless drill but the ones that are light enough would have to be recharged often and that can be a big pain. Can you guys think of anything low tech that you would like to have in the staging area before a game?
THANX and keep em coming!

All i want in paintball is just to have fun a few times a month with my pb buddies. Going "pro" and all that isnt what its about to me, i improve a bit each time i go and that is whats fun.

invisable paintballs would be cool becuase you cant see them as well flying through the air, however they would be quite useless unless you applied this addition...
fill the paintballs with some sort of liquid chemical (non toxic) that is clear however when exposed to air it changes colors.
that way when they break on someone a color appears to indicate a hit.
dont know if it would work but it would be cool

A smaller lighter hopper that feed 25 bps consistantly and that doesn't break balls inside. In addition, it must still hold 175 balls and must be balanced on top. I don't want another design of the q-loader...

Designing a better hopper would be cool, and you probably can't, but coming up with a design for a whole new gun would be sweet.
