Wear gloves, high visablity clothings and a box - very important!
In a game your decision is final sort it out later because it can ruin a game and distracts you from the other players. If you have made a mistake and it was proven accept it and learn from it.

invest in a neck guard...
keep your head stationary and move your eyes to view players; this way you'll never give away another's position
be attentive and learn something!

Unless they are cute females.... ;)
When I reffed, I made it clear from the start that once we hit the field, I was in charge and there was no talking back. you have a problem take it up with me after the game. (the standing joke was "hand to hand combat is NOT allowed... except by the ref.")
Other then that, be fair and try to stay out of the way.

Oh yeah the first few times that you ref you'll get caught in sooo much crossfire you'll be covered in welts, dont worry you'll gradually learn how to stay out the way and still keep an eye on the game.

Here's a story. The ref helped make it funnier.

I think the worst thing was when a local thread had to stop a bunch of 30 year olds from saying "butt plug" every time he said "barrel plug"
15 men that wanted to be 15 and making more stupid comments then a child of that age:rolleyes:

You could keep your head stationary and use your eyes to keep track of the last man on a team, or you could purposefully stand next to an empty bunker about 10-20 feet away from aforementioned last player, head pointed straight at it as if to imply there was someone there, and laugh until it hurts as the other team performs bunkering maneuvers on it while the infamous last man picks the attackers off when they reach the bunker. That'll teach 'em to use the Ref as an indicator in a game anyway. The Ref is there to make calls, not a spoiler upon which you can base your movements.

If you think you've found the perfect vantage point where you can see everything clearly, don't stand there- you will be shot, probably repeatedly.
