History Of Paintball
By: Dylan Rinker

When people think of paintball, most think of a very crude game using “guns” to shoot at opponents. People think this is a dangerous sport only played by delinquents. This is all very far from the truth. Paintball is a highly sophisticated sport that combines natural athleticism, teamwork, and strategy into one action-packed game. But, to learn more about paintball and its many positive aspects we must go back to 1981 where the first game of paintball was ever played.
Bob Gurnsey, Hayes Noel, and Charles Gaines were in a debate one day of who was smarter, city slickers or country men. They decided that they would play a game in which 12 people who were equipped with guns that shot paint. These men tried to capture the opponents flags. If you were hit with the paint you were out of the game. These paintball guns were originally made for marking cows and lumber and were powered by CO2. All 12 precipitants used shop goggles to protect their eyes. They used Nelson brand paint the same used by farmers for marking objects. Richie White a country boy ended up winning the entire competition without firing a single shot. Bob Gurnsey saw the potential of the sport they had played that day and decided to make the very first paintball field. The first tournament ever held at Gurnsey’s new field was in 1983.
Based on the name of Gurnsey’s field, Natural Survival Game, the first elimination match was established. These were played on large amounts of land, usually over 50 acres and were called The Natural Survival Game. The matches were elimination meaning if you were hit with a paintball you were out. Usually, these matches were played every man for themselves, but occasionally they would play with 2 teams against each other.
Now more and more variations of games are being created. Capture the Flag is the biggest game in the paintball industry right now. Not only could you play a large field capture the flag game, but also games with air bunkers can be turned into Capture the Flag games, with the team that obtains the flag getting more points. These games are timed and the team with the most points at the end of the time is the winner. You could almost think of it like a basketball game, but when one team eliminates the other team the game isn’t over yet. Everyone joins back in and plays another round. This goes until time runs out. Another version of paintball is offensive/defensive scenarios. These are sometimes based on historical events such as The Alamo. One team would play as one side and one as the other. The Texans would stay in the fort which would represent The Alamo. These games and more are now available to every type of paintballer.
New types of fields are also being developed. When paintball had first started, most fields were just sections of forest and people using trees as bunkers. Now, field are closer and use different items are bunkers. One paintball field called the Airball Field uses blow up air bunkers that are shaped as items from temples to pyramids. There is also something called a Hyperball Field which uses plastic tubing as bunkers. These fields are generally smaller and the game is over quicker. These fields are made for the player who likes fast paced action and doesn’t mind getting 20 paintballs a second shot at his bunker. Despite all the technology some folks still like to go out and play in the woods. Outlawballers, as their known as like the slower style of game using more thinking and patience than your average Airballer. Unluckily, most of the time these two types of paintballers don’t get along they still both enjoy the sport.
So, we can’t say we know what is to come of the sport of Paintball in the future. But, we can say that it will be for the best. Just look at the progress in 20 years. From the first pump paintball markers that were used to mark cattle, we now have $1500 markers that are capable of shooting over 20 balls per second. We have guns with electronic boards and computer chips in them to show everything from how long a game has been going on, to how many shots the gun has fired. So, with all this progress people can only begin to think about what the sport will be like in the future.

Thoughts?
I know it's a bit noobish, but I dont want to confuse everyone.

The debate between the 3 man was about who would survive in a mass emergency. I don't think I liked how it ended either. I believe that most of us know that speedball is the future of paintball. You could bring up paintball today like the big tournament that ended today...NPPL Tampa 2005.

You could stop using you and we...Keep it in third person, not second and somewhat first.

My two-cents...In 3 days, you guys will be seeing my rough draft of my massive paintball essay. It's a good thing that my teacher doesn't no jack about paintball so its harder for her to grade...at least I think so.

Well its about eight hundred pages to short and it doesnt really cover much of anything.

But if your giving it to someone who doesnt know his/her arse from a hole in the ground when it comes to paintball you should be able to BS your way to at least a B.

FYI-If this is your english paper please PLEASE retype it and redraft parts to be a bit more proper and a bit more pleasing to read.
