View Full Version : Wearing vests and webbing?

last Saturday i wore an assault vest i own from my cadet days while playing.
i found that firstly, it was useful for holding spare ammo and grenades, and secondly it helped take some of the punch when being hit. i found a problem occurred when it came to making me less nimble!
does anyone else have views on wearing vests or webbing during play?

Wearing vests IMO is good if you are a girl. Not in the fact that I am saying you can't take a hit. But if you play more of the scenario type, which you do apparently, its sick looking. I want to go to a scenario game dressed like Sam Fisher in the Japanese Embassy level of the first Splinter Cell.
But if you are playing any fast paced game IE speedball,x-ball etc. Don't wear one.

I think it is a good idea if you are playing a slower paced game like Murderdoll said. It allows you to compactly hold your spare pods of ammo, and it shouldn't reduce your mobility that much if it fits properly. But I find that the harnesses made for PB-players that sit in the lower lumbar area of the back are far more effective for me, allowing me to still crawl without crushing paint and still hold my ammo in a spot where I can get to it.

Meh...The vest is fine with me, but webbing is just another thing to get crap stuck in while crawling :|

I used a vest once. They'd be handy in scenarios and woodsball play, but I prefer the shotgun belt and wrist harness for when I play stock-class, and I only play stock-class in the woods. I just prefer the mobility, since I wear underarmor anyways. Vests are especially handy for people with pistols or Stock class markers so that you have a convenient area to store spent 12grams and empty 10rd tubes without filling your pockets or littering on the field.

Nobody needs to wear a vest in paintball, you shouldn't need any small things on the field that a vest would allow you to carry and packs were made for a reason, to hold your paint.

 in many cases it's illegal to carry tools onto the field. what other things could you possibly need?

Amazing: 12gram and 10-round tubes like somebody said before...it happens. I prefer to have stuff tucked away nicely, hence why I secure them to my belt using different methods.
As for this thread, one thing needs to be understood: nobody NEEDS a vest just like nobody NEEDS extra pods of ammo...we can limit our exchange of fire, we just don't want to, likewise, we can wear a vest...it is a matter of preference, not necessity.

i thought all the stock players wore those ringed elastic strap whatchamacallits anyway.
my point is, vests are impractical, even in the woods, when compared to the simpler pod packs and loopy stock class things.

The thing is, you do need extra paint. That's why you carry it, because odds are you're going to need it. Not carrying extra paint on the field is just a dumb idea. Especially if you'replaying speedball at higher levels.

And if you're playing a scenario game, theres also things that you might NEED. Besides the fact that they can hold pods of paint, the can also carry other nice stuff that might come in handy for scenario ballers. Like cadet said, 12 grams. I also know some scenario ballers like to use walkie-talkie systems, which a lot of vests accomodate on the shoulders. Pouchers for field maps, player ID/character ID, places for grenades (if that's your thing), a hydration pouch comes in handy if you're playing a long scenario game. I agree completely that for speedball and most rec woodsball games, all you need is a simple harness, which I use, but some people like having extra space to carry stuff for long games. Different types of games, different needs.
And I'm saying that any one person is going to start, but no need to turn this into a speedball vs. scenario thread or anything. To each his own.

I also wear a assault vest for BOTH spdball and woodsball.
It is the Blackhawk commando chest rig similar to old Rhodesian chest rig.
It holds three 100ball pods and my tools and a 9oz tank and five 10ball cigar tubes. In addition, I also wear a Thigh rig, like the specops guys, it holds two 100ball pods and keeps them where I need them!
I used to wear one of those back pod holders, seemly what everyone wears that plays spdball. However, I do not drop my pods, so it was a pain in the arse to put them back in. Both the thigh and chest rigs are easy to put empty pods back in. Also the chest rig does not interfere with my hydration pack! ;)
I also use a shotgun pouch for my 12 grams, it holds about 12 or 14.
if you what to see other pbers that use military/specops gear, check out www.opsgear.com

Carrying tools on the field with you is very illegal, you know...

You could very easily be banned from the field, and if somebody got shot from a ball that was going too fast, easily sued.
There are no tools you should need to carry with you for a game.

Not at my field...but I see why they would be illegal.

A container of any sorts is necessary for scenarios. There are often objects hidden on the field that you need to recover and often keep concealed. The last scenario I went to also had red bands for medics to heal people with, and I was a medic. The downside to being a medic was that you couldn't be healed and had to wait for reinsertion when shot, so medics were often targets. Using a shotgun pouch, I could conceal medic bands which were rather vibrant, and I could keep various objects that missions required us to get, without drawing attention to myself. Heck, playing for 9 hours with a PGP and 40 rounds worth of 12g's for the day is hard enough as it is ;)
Still, I wouldn't think of using anything but a normal pack with the elastic bands for speedball. I love my NXe pack. If I were to be playing stock class, I would probably use a shotgun belt full of 10rd tubes and a wrist-band full of 12grams for obvious reasons.
Basically, vests are rather helpful in different forms of play. For regular woodsball, the purpose of it is questionable, but they are very important for scenarios.

Vest's are overboard. Even if they hold all of what you claim, any tool brought on the field is a huge no no.
