I guess the title can be a little misleading, but I was watching paintball 2 xtreme, which albeit, kinda weak, still, they were showing rookies, and there was this 11 year old kid with a dm4? Now the question is where does a kid get the money to buy a dm4, or an angel, or a timmy, or a ego? : / I wish my dad was bill gates.

i know lots of little kids who have nice markers. lasoya timmy, trix, vision impy, ect. i work of my *** and get **** used markers that take lots of maintenance and they get nice new ones that they don't even know how 2 work. then there mommy gives them money so they can pay 2 play 5 times a week and then i have to compete with them 2 get spots on teams. then they say the worked hard to get there marker. u know damn well that if they mowed lawns all summer they still wouldn't have enough to buy a nice marker or pay for 3 cases of paint a week. next time u see one of these kids please, light them up like a Christmas tree.

I've played against some of the same "kids" you're talking about, and they're all about 14-17. They're pretty good too, some of them may have had their guns bought for them, but the one's you were watching can ball.
memphit
05-18-2005, 03:55 PM
im not debating whether or not they can ball, im debating on how they got 1500 dollar marker setups. And this kid didnt look 14, cause he was a tiny mofo. He was seriously like 11-12

Your lucky, my parents are being jerks about paintball. I might sell a whole bunch of their stuff and buy 3 Rippers or something.

I can only afford half a case when i play usually. Hell, i'm still using this revvy, although it is secksie.
Now that I think about it, it was a miracle that I got my timmy. I got a sweet deal, about $300 of it payed for as my christmas present, sold my cocker, and worked for the rest of the cash.

My parents don't really help me with pball, I buy it all. Except that $86.88 loan they gave me for the phantom I've been saving for the last year...
Not all "financially blessed" people are arrogant. Heck, a whole lot of the pros started on 'trixes and timmies. I'm not complaining.
I personally like working for my own gear, it makes me feel as if it's my own and I also take more care of my stuff.
It is kind of funny when the the youngns' start bragging, though.

Hate to say it but when I have kids they are going to be more then a bit spoiled when it comes to marker selection. That and the fact that they will have a endless supply of paint to practice with. Lets face it, you will know which one is my kid. It will be the one with the custom gat and a constantly packed pod pack (wearing one of daddys old jerseys) and chances are I will be about four feet away making sure no one gives em any crap.
Way I see it, its better to give them a positive hobby to do that gives them some tools they can use in the real world and also gives them a chance at a career. Its better to have them shooting paintballs on the field then shooting drugs or shooting up a school.

There are three kinds of kids with good markers, in my opinion.
Spoiled - Usually the younger ones. They didn't do any work to get their marker, and they generally suck. Some are good, though. Its really because paintball is just a fad to most of them.
Paintball Family - Sometimes, people's parents are just plain involved in paintball. My friend's dad buys him the latest timmy every time a new one comes out because he's very involved and wants his son to be. Perfectly reasonable IMHO.
Normal Kids - People who actually work for a good portion of their marker, or get a reasonable amount of money towards it for xmas or their birthday but still have to do some work themselves.

Also, if you had the opportunity, you would let your parents buy you gear, guns, and paint. So stop complaining about it. Also, good look getting that spot on the team if you can only play like 2-3 times a month. Part of being on a team is having financial backing.

Be afraid, be VERY VERY afraid. Just think of some of the kids that will be playing the fields in twenty years or less....
You think you've seen spoiled? Just wait, some of the kids of people that are seriously involved will have an ungodly amount of crap at their disposal. Just think....

It doesn't make them any less of a player, but it DOES make them respect their equipment LESS. I've seen FAR too many kids disrespect their equipment that their parents have bought them.
I've seen a kid get mad and throw his brand new DM5, Scion, and ReloaderB into the mud because he was shot out. I've seen a kid with a freeflow E-cocker throw it in the mud because it wasn't running at it's best (needed a new battery).
Conversely, people who purchase their own equipment take care of it. My teammate, who paid off his Fly week by week, keeps it spick and span, not a touch of paint or dirt on it. So does my other ref who owns a shocker that he bought himself. And let's not even TALK about how I keep my own personally purchased gear.
The point is this - if you work for your equipment, you WILL appreciate it more than if you have it handed to you.

well in being a dad I can say that I will be buying my brat a new gun and all the gear that's needed when he starts playing. Not because I want to spoil him but because I don't want him playing with some Walmart special and some cheap :censored: mask. It won't be top shelf stuff, but it will be dependable and safe. Now he won't be getting all this gear for free though.... The yard need mowing, the garage needs cleaning, weeds need to be pulled out of the garden, dishes have to get done everynight, anything else I want my little slave to do and he needs at least a "B" avg in his grades. All the chores and work and "B"'s will get him the gun/gear of my choice. All that with straight "A"'s and it's the gun/gear of his choice. There is a method to the madness of parents buying gear for the kids. If he's willing to bust his butt and work hard, I'm willing to reward his efforts.

ya know...I'm glad that there's peeps out there, that love their kids enough to give them a timmy. or a proto matrix. but like somebody said...for most peeps, thats a whole month's paycheck. there are limits!!!
eh...I've seen a few of them that dont just abuse their equipment. they arent very cool to other players either. on, or off, the field.
like this one kid. prolly about twelve, was at the table next to us, showing off his dm5 to his friends. comes over as we are leaving, and accuses my captain of stealing his profiler. My captain, not HAVING to do so, drops his bag right in the middle of everybody, opens it up, shows the kid where his name is engraved in His profiler mask. the kid just walked off. didnt apologize, didnt thank him for clearing it up. just walks off.
turns out the brat left it sitting on the counter in the proshop.

The thing with my kid though is that he's grown up being involved with paintball. It's been around him his whole life. Even at 7 he know most of the rules of the local fields, the important "official rules", and Dad's rules. He has a good understanding of the different guns and where they sit in the performance food chain. He also knows VERY well that IF I buy him a gun (most likely a very nice spyder for his first one...he won't get straight A's...he's too much like his father...) if he doesn't respect it and care for it, he simply won't have it. Not playing will be the least of his concerns at that point. There is a downside to you dad playing for as long as I have. I KNOW the rules and he knows it...he won't be able to BS me about this stuff. So I won't have to listen to "I have to have this for that reason dad...". I can't stand kids who get really nice things from their folks and then they bash it or could care less about caring for it because they didn't pay for it. Or they have this "I'm better then everyone...look at my pimpin gear..." attitude. I just want to smack them one...
I ever catch my kid doing that crap, I'll punishment bunker him, embarrass him completely on the field buy having his 30 something dad out do him and his "skills", put him over my knee in front of all the girls at the field, take ALL of his gear away, make him sit on the side line and WATCH everyone else play, let him watch as one of my teammates kids borrows his gear for the day, then there is the car ride home, then he'll be doing extra chores for a month instead of playing paintball. He knows it too and he honestly won't expect any less of me. He doesn't have a lot but the one lesson I'm grateful he learned is to be appreciative of what he has and to work for what he wants. I'm very lucky for that. The other thing he learned is that doing things MY way without complaining get's him what he wants. Not doing it my way get's him to his room for the weekend.

While there are some kids that have the latest stuff bought for them from a parent and then treat it like crap, that's not always the case. I was playing with some of my friends at an indoor field that wasn't too crowded. We staged next to some younger kids (12ish), who were there with one of the kids dad. The kid that was there with his dad had a dm4 and dye gear, whereas his friends had spyders and tippmanns and wore jeans and t-shirts. Not once did I hear the kid brag, or even talk about his equipment. He took care of it, and didn't whine when he got shot. he didn't act superior, they just played the game, reguardless of what everyone had. Those kids I have no problem with, it's the whiners that are annoying.

 Can I come home with you...

I live in a family where it would be very easy to be spoiled with paintball equipment, but I don't allow that to happen to myself. My dad is quite involved with paintball (he's 40 and doesn't play though), but being 17 I have pride in my belongings. My car and paintball marker included. If I wanted the latest Trix, I could ask him and receive it, but I don't because I want the pride of owning my own equipment.
My brother on the other hand gets whatever he wants, and usually takes poor care of it.
The only thing I haven't payed for was the 12 month field membership and a new Spectra mask for Christmas. I hold a part time job, umpire little league, and have a deal with my parents (B+ or better in classes and constant yardwork pays for my paint).

Lol I'm supposed to have "B+" and up, but yeah i haven't been playing for the past two months because of that. I think it's a thing that all paintballers experience eventually, pride in their marker and themselves.
(Don't believe me? Try arguing with an older guy who's had his Tippmann for quite a while.)

Let me share with you guys that this whole rat race of life is a marathon, not a sprint. The faster you realize that and learn to be content with what you have the happier you'll be. My parents *NEVER* bought my brother, sister and I stuff when we were younger (beyond the necessities). If we wanted additional things, we got a job and paid for them. The housework we did (including mowing a very large lawn...think 3 hours with a riding mower and push mower going simultaneously) was EXPECTED and not considered optional. We learned a work ethic, which in some cases is missing or lacking in some of the youth I see at the field.
I can't tell you how many times I see kids out there who like Rob mentioned have no respect for their equipment or what it actually takes to accumulate that sum of money. I've worked every summer and every year from 1990 when I was 14 until now. I did some of the most god awful jobs including maintenance, painting, construction, landscaping, etc. all the way through college. The object lesson is that hardwork pays dividends and usually not in the immediate future. My brother, sister and I all have successful careers and by the standards of most of the people here I make a very large, very significant income with a large, well known company. I can now splurge on some of the luxuries in our sport (hence the 4 Intimidators) and buy a nice house, car etc.
Life, as a whole, is unfair. There will be people out there who, for whatever reason, will get fast cars, nice homes, and luxuries with minimal effort but the majority of us have to work for them. The faster you realize this and learn contentment in what you have and gain satisfaction in earning it, you'll be better off. It can be a little disconcerting to see some 11 year old at the field rocking a $1500 set up when he/she has no clue how to maintain or use it, but take satisfaction in knowing that, in the long run, you'll probably be better off.
My little story on this...I was cleaning out my hopper at the Pevs Fairfax store last sunday after a batch of bad paint at the PBR-IOG meet at EMR and saw a family walk in. The dad bought 3 Ego's on the spot, with 4 tanks (he had bought an ego for himself the week before), 4 Reloader B's, Barrels, Gear and other assorted items for well over $6000. His 3 young kids immediately thought they were hot stuff. I will take great satisfaction lighting them up in a few weeks. :bandaged:

Since when has it become the amount of money invested in the sport and how good of stuff you own that amounts to experience? If you've ever been in a situation where a little 12 year old with a DM5 starts squeaking out orders because he has the best marker on the field, you know what I'm talking about. I'd advise shooting him in the back "on accident," but that'd be hypocritical of my point (not to mention maturity). That's something which must be taught to the younger kids of (my) generation.
Experience and respect cannot be bought, they must be earned.

best of luck, and I wish you could get pics  or better...vid.
I know what you mean. my halfbrothers that lived with my dad, were spoiled rotten. brand new bikes, every year. treated them like trash, left them out in the rain, tore them up, abused the heck outta them. then it was "dad, I need a new bike!" Or "dad I need new shoes these arent in style anymore, drop 80 bucks on a new pair!" and my dad was by no means living well on cash.
oh....and then my youngest sister came along...and ALL that changed real fast. talk about a spoiled brat? look it up and under the definition it should boldly state "Jessica *****".

Honestly, if there are little kids thinking they are the **** out on the field, I shoot them with no remorse. I was put into my spot multiple times, and learned good lessons. I help kids not get shot and stabbed when they go into the ghettos of areas because of this (may sound like BS, but think about it long and hard). I know what it feels like to get flipped out at as a kid, I know how you feel like crying or whatever, but guess what, I remember those times for years and years to come, and I can still bring up those memories whenever I want.
Also, like people have said, only noobs will respect you if you have good ****, you earn respect by playing with the factory guys and taking them out. One of the people that I respect the most to this day in paintball is this guy with a tippmann who was shooting me out frequently two years ago, he just had a new barrel and was taking out 4-5 guys on the other team. I also respect this one ref at Hogans, he uses and NSGS splatmaster, and he uses it in tournament and bunkers kids that have spent 1000$+ in setups. Hopefully you get the point so I dont have to ramble on...
