In most situations people shoot off the start. If your gonna play mid you'll have to forgo that fun. When me and another guy I find at the field on my team at the start decide to go mid.
Here is how I do a typical round with a buddy system.

We both start of hunched over and run to our flanks.

Your rear paint layers(noted with their trigger happy fingers and 10+loaders with them and equally large wallets -paint is expensive-) are there to provide cover what you wanna do is get to your target bunker with a full hopper and a paintless jersey move quick stay low and you'll be clean for your true purpose of taking people out.

(I'm not saying mid-people do all the work but it is there main job to eliminate people)

Don't carry too much paint. You wanna travel light, your gonna be running and moving fast extra weight and paint is a detriment. I have a 3-tube attack pack for when I'm playing mid and a 5-tube attack pack for woods etc...(I love Dye's packs they don't jiggle and fit snugly.)

Make your shots count. Don't waste paint that's the layers job.

Once your there give out enemy positions to your team this is very important.

Move around the field. Your objective is search and destroy so go search and destroy. Don't be afraid to run out in the open to advance, just make sure you tell your partner(buddy) to provide cover fire. using this method you can inch your way up the field eliminating opponents as you go.

Don't be stupid. If you've got two streams of paint wait for it to stop before looking out the side your team needs you there.

Lastly learn to pop-shoot if you ever wanna get enywhere as a middle man you gotta learn this one.

Best of luck,
