View Full Version : What to bring?

Magnus55
01-13-2002, 11:33 AM
We had one of these threads earlier, but I'm not really sure where it went. So I am going to make a new one. Lets try compile a list of what equipment to bring with you when you go paintballing, and two little lists for additional equipment to bring for just speedball, or just for woodsball/outlawball, since you need different equipment depending on which one, but there are some pieces of equipment that you need for both, like your gun.

What to bring for paintball?
-Marker (gun)
-Mask
-hopper
-elbow
-tank
-paint
-screwdriver(s)
-athletic shoes/cleats
-cloth
-oil
-spray bottle (in case you get gogged)
-Sports bottle filled with tap water (for cleaning)
-Paper towels/a towel (for cleaing)
-Squeegee
-Allen Wrenches (Hex set)
-Complete change of clothes
-Extra set of batteries (gun and loader if applicable)
-spare o-rings
-towel (to set your gun on)
-teflon tape/plumbers tape (in case you need to fix any leaks)
-pocket knife
-Spare lenses (in case you notice a crack from your original one or get gogged)
-Barrel plug/condom (unless you're renting and they supply it for you)
-Gun Manual (for various repairs)
-batteries(9v for revvies, other misc for mask fans, markers etc)
-Burst disc's
-springs
-hammers
-hose/barbs(cocker)
-Macroline/braided SS
-fittings
-a silicon grease(shocker lube)
-CUP (For future prosperity!)
-Harness and pods

special equipment for just speedball or for playing at an organized field
-Money (for food, paint, air etc)
-ID (for various reasons)

special equipment for just woodsball/outlawball
-camo clothes/ghille suit
-Bugspray
-water
-food (lots and lots of food!):slurp:
-trash bags (to clean up any messes)
-First aid kit(very important)
-Chronograph
-a tarp (in case it rains)
-cell phone (for emergencies)
-Duct tape (for temporary repairs)
-rope (for temporary repairs)
-hammer and nails (to fix broken bunkers)
-Portable table(To lay your gear on it)

My goal here is to make a list to help the new paintballers going to a field for the first time or outlawballing for the first time know what to bring, or even to give the more seasoned players a few new ideas about simple things to bring that can better their paintball experience. Just add it in this thread and I'll edit it into the list. :)

TONES (or gallons) of water and food! believe me on this! you'll play so much better if you have stuff to eat and drink

bring some towels so you can whipe your gear off after games and keep your goggles clean and to clean your squeege if you have used it.

Chad51
01-14-2002, 05:57 PM
What is a hex kit?

Magnus55
01-14-2002, 06:04 PM
Allan wrenches I'm assuming?

UTLadiesMan
01-14-2002, 06:05 PM
It's a bunch of allen (hex) wrenches. If you might need to field strip your marker, you should have all of the necessary allen wrenches with you.

Chad51

Listen to him..... FOOD TAKE FOOD. When the end of the day comes and people say should we play more og go home and eat, it sucks, if you have food, you can tide them over (and yourself) so you can play more.....

Take a tarp so if it starts to rain...

If it's outlaw, make sure you have a cell phone.
towels so you dont have to lay your gun down on your car and scratch anything. Duct tape, may be tacky, but better than nothin. rope (I once tied my hopper on when my elbow broke in half).

just some stuff. If you want to make it neater in your list by all means Magnus

anything.....

Some kid gets shot in the eye. some Co2 tank blows up in your hands, some kid accidently lit the forest on fire, need a ride home, tripped over a log while running away and brake your leg, get shot in the neck, close range, and it starts bleeding profusely and you cant breath, order pizza so it arrives right when you get back to your house :)

many things...

Chad51
01-20-2002, 09:36 AM
Ya okay I never really thought of it that way but I quess as safe as paintball is the terrian can cause injuries just running through the forest or if someone desides to use a hot marker or take their mask off...

Your gun's manual, in case you need to make a repair.

Just this weekend I thought my reg had broken. There was no air pressure transferring from my tank to the gun. I brought it into the pro shop, and the guy says my pressure disk is ruptured. I take my gun back to my little area, and look at the schematic layout in my manual. After some reading, and minor dissasembly, I got it working. Turns out my friend didn't place the bolt back in right, that's all. Saved me a few bucks.

hey, i didn't see anything abotu spare parts, ie

Burst disc's
springs
hammers
hose/barbs(cocker)
Macroline/braided SS
fittings
a silicon grease(shocker lube)
batteries(9v for revvies, other misc for mask fans, markers etc)
pocket chrono(not a bad idea, especially for outlaw)

thats about all i can think of hehe.
Spare or stock stuff is also good to keep around. Guaranteed, your equipment will fail in some way on the really big days(tourney's, scenarios etc, some *** named murphy hehe).

a portable table if your playing out law, if you have to do a repair, you dont want leaves and stuff in your gun.

a Gameboy, in case you get eliminated quick and the game goes on for another hour, you can beat Zelda: Link's Awakening or play Mega Man or something :D

Dude your goggs must be scratched to hell - the amonia / alcohol in the window cleaner disolves the plastic of your lens.

Please do not make the same mistake this guy did.

Do not use window cleaner on your mask. (You can use it on your gun tho).

you might wanna bring a baseball cap(hat)
Put it on backwards, in a slight angle, then put on your mask
It covers your head and the back of your neck(somewhat)
The full back hats work better though, seeing how paintballs can fly into the hole of adjustable hats.(not kidding)

Hmm... this list is kinda excessive. Most fields do have stuff, so if you aren't playing renegade ball (outlawball) for your first experiences with paintball, you should be ok. I would recommend this anyway, since it will give you a chance to recieve a little coaching and tips from more experienced players. Just don't get to hooked on using field tools and equipment, because when you finally DO play some renegade ball, you will want that stuff.

Oh, and I'd recommend that instead of a cup, you just bring that towel out on the field with you. A folded towel makes a great pad for your... um... stuff, just stick it halfway down your pants and let the other end hang. This provides adequate protection, and provides more flexibility for your legs. Not to mention that you have a towel on the field, just because you never know.

A gerber multi tool in your pocket is a great item for a woods player. Also, a second pair of shoes, you never know when you will encounter a big pile of dung.

Also, when going out for an outlaw game, we all chip in and bring certain things. We use the tailgate of my truck as a gun repair/cleaning station and I bring a 5 gallon water jug with a spiggot. Another guy brings a tool set, and somebody else brings the beer, and another guy brings a roll of papertowls... If you are playing a true outlaw game, a police scanner might be good too. By the time the pigs get out there, you can be long gone.

Another item you might want to bring along would be a couple of flags, arm bands, or any other special equipment needed for any particular games.

Another item that I carry is a sq yd piece of mossy oak cammo fabric. Use it to cammo a stash of paintballs, help hide your gun in those stickey situations, or wipe off your mask without a white towl to give you away. The possabilaties are endless.

i am a newbie haven't played yet (going this next weekend with a group)

a garbage bag to cover your car seats in case you get pegged alot and full of paint

also layered clothing

CKYshane

I'm kinda of going off the last one, but:

Shorts and sandals to change into after you're done for the day but still watching... or, if you're me, to change into for the games after lunch
A beach towel is multipurpose. You can spread it out on the ground to sit on or keep your stuff on, you can wrap yourself in it if its chilly, and you can put it on the car seats so you don't paint your '96 Jeep Cherokee pink.
A Nalgene bottle is useful for any sport. They're literally unbreakable and totally multipurpose. You can fill them with water, gatorade, kool aid, or whatever. You can also use them for target practice. Or if you get one of the soft-plastic kind, you can use it as a hacki-sack or football. And if you break them? You can get it replaced at Sports Authority for free (life-time guarantee doesn't cover loss of bottle).
A watch is a must.
A flathead screwdriver didn't get mentioned. Many guns have atleast a couple parts that require flatheads (though dimes and pennies can be substituted).

Depends on where you go. All restrictions are store policy--there is no law in any state as to one way or the other. Since you have to have parental consent to get in, your local field will have no problem filling for you. I know Sports Authority requires you to be 18 to buy markers, paint, or CO2. Just depends on where you go.

buy an extra tank and fill it. it sucks to have to quit cause your co2 ran out.

baseball cap or bandanna, for the hat, wear it backwards on your head, it helps to keep paint out of your hair and stuff.

gloves, trust me, you need um. it hurts worse than anything, well almost anything:) , to get hit in the hand.

To those wondering about Cel phones, mine saved a mans life at the field (he had a seizure) luckily we were all in the dead box, and not mid game when it happened!

Strap Wrench
Gun Lube (Hopes No9)
Loc-Tite
Adjustable wrench (crescent)
One of those fold up chairs that are ever so popular now
HYDRATION!
Any extra parts you have someone may need to borrow something (Even a stock barrel)
Tweezers if playing in the woods, splinters are a given, and very uncomfortable(sp?)!
Band-aids
Granola Bars, Bananas, Energy Bars
Thats all I can think of right now, Im one of the most "prepared" people at my field I do most of the on-site repairs and all my junk fits into a Hockey bag, and a gun case.

For those who bring cell phones to outlaw games...or anywhere for that matter:

Take a second and get the address or cross streets where you will be playing. I work for 911 and there is nothing more frustrating than getting a 911 call from a guy whose friend has hurt himself on a field somewhere in BF Egypt, and they don't have a clue where they are.

Cell phones do not provide a location (yet) that you are calling from when you dial 9-1-1, so take a second and find out where you are.

This happened last weekend. We had a guy who took a tumble down a hill side and impaled his thigh on a broken branch. He was in critical condition and no one on the field had a clue where they were. It took our medics 45 minutes to find the guy when it should have only taken 10 minutes.

Accidents happen...plan for them

06-28-2003, 07:43 AM
He was transported to the ER. To my knowledge he was released after getting stitched up and having some fluids pushed through his system. Beyond that I don't know much...we never find out after they reach the hospital :-)

I am pretty sure he wasn't hurt too bad or else the papers would have been all over it like they were the week before when they reported a bottle exploding at a field out of state and killing someone (a CO2 bottle apparently 'popped' while it was being filled and the resulting shrapnal killed the poor guy doing the filling).

I am sure there are people who know more about that particular incident than I do. To those who knew the person my hat's off to them and they have my deepest sympathies.

10-11-2003, 07:43 PM
A burst disk is that thing on your co2 that sticks out on the collar bellow the threads. Whenever you over fill it or the pressure becomes to high, there is a little piece of something that breaks inside the disk and lets air out of the little hole so your tank doesn't explode. It's all about safety:) .

Well my marker is a little tricked out... key word... a little so I bring stock parts.

Stock Bolt in case you get a really bad chop and dont have time to clean it

Stock Trigger in case the upgraded one fails or gets messed up

yup, handy for opening boxes and bags of paint. I at last ring a pen knife. But I would also suggest those letter openers. pratically any kind would do.

This one does it for me. One handed opening, carabiner clip, semi serrated. Big enough to do most anything, small enough not to scare the faint hearted (I leave my hunting knives at home, thank you) and Tough enough to depend on. Bucks are worth the money

I use it to steady my shot, perhaps you might find it helpful.

Extra Parts:

If you drive there, carry spare keys. Even if you take a cable tie and secure them to the frame. ive locked my stuff in the car and had to miss a night at the field waiting for a locksmith.

I carry my spare screws in an expired pill bottle.

alot of you said food, and drink. It may go without saying but 2 coolers are nice to have. one for consumables and the other to keep paint at a good temp on a hot day.

Personally, when I go balling its on a camping trip in the woods so I bring everything I could possibly need for both ball and camping (makes for a really fun weekend).

In order of importance, here's what I bring.

1. Money - This is what get you in, gte your paint, and gets your gear if you odn't have any. Show up without it and I promise your day at the field will be short. (Unless you are a ref.)
2. Mask - Even if you don't have a gun you can have fun just shouting out player positions.
3. Marker Setup - Can't get anyone out without this. Be sure you get the whole gat, leaving a hopper at home is a real bummer.
4. Proper Clothes - Don't have to be paintball specific, but should be loose fitting and easy to clean.
5. Change of Clothes - Copied from www.valdostapaintball.com: "...bring a change of clothes with you. At the start of the day, we may scoff at the idea of diving in a huge puddle, but once the paint starts to fly, you’ll do whatever it takes to live! Trust me; it is pretty embarrassing to go to a restaurant with the team after an insane day of paintball in a T-shirt and soaking wet boxers!"
6. Parts - Especially tank o-rings and batteries. Buying at the field is usually more expensive.
7. Bag - Its a lot harder to lose things if tis all in one bag. Can save you a lot of money in spare parts if youre anything like me.
8. Phone - This is only if you do not drive yourself. Its a pain for both you and your ride if you are not ready to leave when they come to get you.
9. Food and Drink - Mainly for times in the woods, most fields have food at good prices.

Well most of that's been covered, it never hurts to give your take on an issue, right?

ok, this one kinda fits under first aid kit, but if you're playing woods ball, or outlaw in some of the warmer seasons, I recommend a snake bite kit. Here in MO, we have a lot of poisonous snakes out in the country. Some first aid kits dont have these in them, so thought I'd mention this.

How about a humungous duffle bag to put everything in?

On a more serious note, try to keep all your stuff in no more than two or three bags or cases. This will greatly decrease your chances of forgetting something, and it's a lot easier than throwing the assorted necessary items into your vehicle and hoping that you have everything.

One thing I find invaluable to bring is a few extra plastic bags. Whether putting away slimy painted clothes or needing to keep something (goggles, marker) out of wet weather these are a cheap solution and a must for myself.

something great to bring would be a leatherman because its got all the tools you need (especially if you get a bit driver) ive got a leatherman wave and it would be great for paintball its got knives asaw screwdrivers and pliers and newer model leatermans would probably be even better.

me and my cousins are going to go paintballing in a few weeks, and i want to know how many cases of paintballs we should buy. we are playing all day from 8-4 and there are 14 of us. how many paintballs does each person use on a typical day?

nick_reith
10-08-2005, 05:11 PM
Depends on what type of gun you have. Like I can shoot about 2 cases in about 4 hours of play. However I highly doubt you will shoot that much. I would figure about 1 case per three people (maybe one case per two people if your group is trigger happy).

If you are using:
Pumps - about 300-400 rounds per person
Mech Semis - about 700-1000 rounds per person
Electros - about 1000-1500 rounds per person

mper90
10-09-2005, 05:22 AM
im pretty sure we are renting Tippman 98s...so im assuming that a Mech Semi?

nick_reith
10-09-2005, 07:33 AM
Yep mech semi. So depending on your playing style i would suggest about a case per 3 people So about 4-5 case should be good. That is calling it safe so you don't run out and if you have some left over you can always use it awhile later. Paint will store about 3 monthes if you store it in a air tight container (either ziplock bags or plastic containers like small rubbermaid box) in a room temp area with a about 30-50% Humidity.

I highly suggest to ALL first time goers...try to borrow or buy a
Thermal Mask...it sucks fogging up and being blind int he middle of balls flying past ur head

1)Suitable clothing to run around the woods..,camo or dark clothing (you're going to get dirty)
2)boots or cleats (cleats r lighter and grip the ground better)
3)Gloves (hand shots suck)
4)Neck protection (not necessary but i don't like hickies on my neck)
5)your own lunch
6)@ least $100
7)Change of clothes ... (ride home in sweat drenched and dirt filled clothes gets on my nerves)

anything extra is up to u
extras:
1)Thermal mask
2)Harness to carry extra balls (which u can also rent @ fields)
3)Hydration (ur going to be running alot)
4)a Lock (to lock up anythign you don't wanna carry with u in a cubby or sumtin)

umm i guess that pretty much covers it if you're renting

My bad.
I thought sticky threads were just in the stickies, that they didn't get upped outside of it, sorry.
Anyway, for a first timer:
Pants:
Wear loosely fitting pants. Blue jeans should suit you fine, however, if they get wet, they will not dry for a very long time. I recommend cargo pants, if you can find some old windbreaker pants, they will work also.

Torso:
Layered clothing is a must. It will absorb most of the impact, and if you get too hot, you can take some off. Sweatshirts are also very popular. I find that a longsleeve works just fine, but it's all about your pain tolerance. Multiple longsleeves, sweatshirts, anything should work.
You want to cover your arms, paint on bare skin is not fun, or healthy.

Head:
A beanie or even pulling your sweatshirt hood up will work. Backward hats are also a great idea, or you can wear nothing at all. I tall deoends on if you want bounces or don't care about paint in your hair.

Hands:
Gloves are all preferance. If you don't want blisters, go to your local hardware store and buy gardening gloves for $1. They'll work for the first time you go, and then you can decide if you want to use them again. Cutting of the trigger fingers is all preferance also.

Feet:
Gym shoes, cleats(if allowed). Whatever your feet are comfortalbe in. UNcomfortable shoes can ruin your day. You might want to find an old pair, as wearing paint covered shoes to school the nest day is no fun.
YOu might even want to go to your local sporting goods store and pick up some cheap soccer cleats.

Food and beverage:
Assuming your field allows food. You should always bring water, maybe Gatorade. Something that can keep you hydrated.
A sandwich or an energy bar is good to keep your energy up. I know people that don't eat anything while they paintball, I do. It all depends on if you think you'll need that energy boost or not.

Reviewing paintball related strageties:
Read the rules for your field always. Listen to the refs, as much as they make suck, they're trying to do their job, don't mess w/ them.
YOu may want to read up on tactics on websites. There are stickies here that can help.

Neck protectors:
Optional, your field should supply them, along w/ chest protectors, for a small fee.

Hope that helped.

In addition to a lot of those things I usually bring a change of clothes just in case of terrain related tears and such. Plus I always bring spare hats since there's always one or two people in whatever group I go with that forget and then complain when they get shot on the top or back of the head.

As for food or drinks, that's more important than the marker itself. By far the most important component of paintball is the players, and food and drinks are what make that component run. Personally I recommend going to the grocerry store and finding a few gallon jugs of Gatorade, the last time I did an all day paintball trip my friends and I ended up going through an entire cooler of Gatorade. Personally I stay away from the energy drinks, but it's really a personal preference since I hate the crash that comes later.

Just remember with food that the best stuff is things like Nutra-Grain and Granola bars, that stuff will give you good energy and is sports compatible. If you can get a hold of MRE's those are pretty good too, especially for woodsball or scenario ball since it gives a good sense of realism. Downside is they give you pretty bad gas, but luckily no one should be close enough to notice in woodsball.

Barrel swabs! It sucks when you have nothing to clean your barrel out with and have to end up spending 14$ on a a barrel swab.At least the barrel got cleaned...

Also, if you have/had glasses, and still have those little spraybottle/cloth kit to clean the lenses, dump out the stuff and fill it with water, and bring the cloth. Great for cleaning your goggles when you get gogged.

On the topic of glasses, what for those who STILL wear glasses? In the military, our chem suites require special glasses be made for us to wear in order to maintain a proper seal. Contacts are absolutely forbidden. Now, I know this isn't chem warfare and we're not really worried about nerve agents, but I have yet to buy my mask yet. Just wondering if there's any tips someone could lend for those of us who wear glasses? Do you find that you end up taking them off and redefine the term "shooting blind" :-) or are masks usually accomodating?

thunderbob
02-11-2009, 05:17 AM
some masks are good for glasses some are not. But most of them work well for glasses. Almost all JT masks would work great with glasses.

Lenny17
02-11-2009, 06:17 AM
For glasses, the best bet is to find a place to try on the mask.

I initially bought the Proto FS, and when I tried them on over my glasses they fit fine. I had fogging issues though, and when I replaced the no-fog lens with a thermal lens, it interfered with my glasses. My vision isn't that bad, so I just went without for awhile.

Playing paintball with everything out of focus wasn't fun though, so I went back to my local shop, and was much more careful about making sure I had a thermal lens on the mask. I ended up walking out with a pair of grills, which fit fantastically, even over my glasses. It's nice to be able to see again!
