View Full Version : Warning/Banning requests from members

Members,
Lately there have been an onslaught of people making threads about how they want to see a member banned and/or warned. Most of the time, the ban/warning request is completely unwarranted and unneeded. This has created many problems for the members here, the staff, and the site itself. 99% of the time it turns into a lynch mob and flame-fest of said member and then that member tries to defend themselves against the masses. All this does is create bad blood between members and normally results in flaming throughout the site as these two+ members constantly go back and forth, ending in ALL getting banned over something stupid.

If you have a problem with a member's posts, please use the report button. That is what it's there for. Then have some patience. We, the staff, are not all online all day everyday 24/7. We need a bit of time to get there and deal with your concern. Your concern is not the only one. There are a lot of you and few of us. Please give us time to react to the problem. Also, sometimes the staff will want to talk about an issue to determine the best action(s). This could take a couple days. We live all over the country and again we're not on 24/7 so sometimes it takes time.
If you are having a problem with a member in general, please don't make a thread about it. Just PM an Agent, Mod, or Super about the issue you are having. We will get back to you, we will look into it, and the problem will be resolved. I promise. That is our job after all. Please give us the time and information to do that BEFORE everyone forms up a lynch mob.
Any questions or comments please feel free to PM me.
Thank you all for your time and cooperation in this matter."

this is a good thread for it will end all cluttering due to angry protests and make pbr a happier place.
Besides people, if someone does something stupid there is a report button.

The point of this thread is not to list anyone. It's for questions or comments about this topic.
Don't be listing issues you have with people here. PM someone or report it.

Well, how about this, I have noticed alot of people have been being banned without getting a warningfirst. What do you get a warning from and what do you not get a warning for?

Well, this is how I think it works, but I don't know if I'm right.

A lesser offence would get you a warning, and if you kept it up you might get banned. But, if you did something really bad, you might get banned instantly.

Jaster would know, but, I tried.

Usually if you're a long time member and the infraction is minor, such as language, trolling, flaming, or cumulative actions of a nuisance nature, you're going to get a warning. You MAY but may not also get warnings for things like misleading posts or things that imply ways to get around forum rules.

Bans immediately come for things like porn, spam, advertising, corporate selling, repeated violations of trolling, flaming, drinking caustic substances, telling someone to go die, cumulative nuissance issues after being warned in the past, being a general pain to the staff. Generally we warn you once, and that's it. After that, sayonara. More latitude is generally given to people who have been here a while and contribute useful posts regularly. We do realize that people get into heated debates or arguments or sometimes skirt a gray issue area. Warnings and Bans are in a gray area and what mods do in some forums may not apply in others due to the propensity for certain hot button issues or problems to escalate in one forum more than another.

For example, if someone comes into the Bob Long forum, that I moderate, and makes a thread saying that Timmy's suck, I'd probably close the thread and give them a warning. The posts in there tend to be pretty well taken and the members in there are rather sedate and patient. If a similar post went into General Paintball Talk or High End Guns and the user had like 2 posts, it wouldn't be unexpected or unreasonable for CoolT, UTLadiesMan or another mod to close the thread and ban due to the fact that it's likely the person is deliberately trolling.

A lot of the ban vs warning thing comes down to intent. Are we going to get it right every time...no probably not, but I think we do 99% of the time. The staff has better things to do than police posts that have issues with them. If it's something you wouldn't say in front of your parents, small children and your priest, then it's something you should think about rephrasing or not posting.

Bottom line is that if you see a post that is out of line, click the "Report" button so that it's brought to the attention of the moderators. Making posts in a forum or responding to trolling or flames only makes more work for us. We do proactively check the reported posts log.

Just my :twocents:

Ah good, finally a thread where I can request people to be banned! I think, personally, this little Jaster kid is getting on my nerves. He's acting all high and mighty, pronouncing laws and stuff of that nature. I don't think that's right for the PBR atmosphere. Can we ban him?

Hey guys when you find time could you check out the Tippy forum? There's been a lot of noobs around spamming and violating rules. And with Coenen busy with school, we don't have a lot of help keeping them in control, I'm sure there are some that could be ban worthy with all the spam. Thanks!

I have a couple questions.

What is trolling? For some odd reason, I get the picture of a large hairy, smelly guy in a boat fishing...maybe thats just me.

And when the report button is used, does it send the report to all of the moderators, or just the ones that are assigned to that forum?

trolling.. there's many definitions for it, for the most part it means surfing threads looking for an e-fight to pick for no reason. It's how people without the ability to be significant in the real world make themselves feel better.

Reporting a post flags it to all mods, supers, and admin.

In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who posts rude or offensive messages on the Internet, such as in online discussion forums, to disrupt discussion or to upset its participants (see Anonymous Internet posting). "Troll" can also mean the message itself or be a verb meaning to post such messages. "Trolling" is also commonly used to describe the activity.

Hi my friend who really enjoys this site and was the one who told me about it has been banned. The reason he was banned was b/c he had been banned before. The reason he was banned before was b/c he let one of our friends use his name to check out the site. When the friend got on he decided to check out the chat. He got on the chat and (being 13) started to mouth off to guys and talk trash. So my friend (woodsballa13) got banned. He figured ehhh wasnt my fault no big deal i'll just make another account (ionwoodsballa13) and just recently he was banned for coming back. The only reason he came back was not to flame people or spam on the chat but to learn about paintball. I think that my friend (ionwoodsballa13) should be unbanned b/c it wasnt his fault. He just want to learn more about this sport so he can help it grow and become better. Please unban ionwoodsballa13.

just wondering but what would happen if ur computer was IP banned and someone else at ur house had a different account. could they get on it at that comp. or would it ban them?

It would ban them. If the IP is banned, any connection from that IP is blocked from getting into the site. We do this with spammers, and people who persistently create dual accounts; especially those who add no value to the forum.

all he ever does on this site is try to get enough posts to become a mod pffhh lol.....and to try to help people out.

We look for quality of posts, not quantity of posts. :finger:

Being that I was the one that did the ban, here's the facts. Your "friend" has multiple accounts. It's your friend's responsibility to safeguard his account. He screwed up the first time by letting a disreputable person use the account. He screwed up again by created a new one. His biggest mistake was letting his "friend" dyehardkrew log in from his IP. DHK has created multiple accounts here and has been a pain. All his accounts and any site he's logged into PBR from are all now IP Banned. Even if I unbanned your friend Woodsballa13, he'd still be blocked out due to the IP ban.

Long story short, we have rules and a TOS agreement for this site. The rules are located at the top of every sub forum. They're not hard to follow or understand. He broke the rules. Then he did it again. Then his friend did. I see nothing in your argument that's compelling enough to even think of discussing unblocking his IP or lifting a ban. :finger:

Not gonna happen.
