I dont live too close to any arena's, but Im getting interested in paintball. Me and some friends have a large wooded area we can play in safely and Im looking at buying a gun. I was looking at something for a beginer that is either A) cheap so if Im interested it's fairly disposable, or B) reliable and upgradable if I get serious. I dont know how games actualy go but in video games Im more of a hide/sneak/sniper personality. The model 98 sniper looked cool, but reading reviews on here all the experianced players gave it a pretty harsh review so I decided to just ask here. What is the best gun for me. Feel free to ask questions if you can better help me decide.

I agree. Get a Spyder Compact 2000. They are cheap, reliable, and upgradable.

If you were looking at the Tippmann they are extremely durable (probably the most durable markers on the market!) Anyways I would recommend a Tippmann Model 98 or Tippmann Model 98 Custom. Then you can get whatever upgrades you want from there.
For all you spyder owners out there lets not turn this thread into a spyder vs tippmann flame war!

Get a tippmann m98 custom. It has better, cheaper upgrades than spyders, and are indeed the most durable markes on the market.I still have one for a back up, and I lone it out to newbie friends when they come with me to the field. NEVER had any problem with mine. Just be sure to get a good barrel (the ACI zero-gravity combo barrel is probably the best for the money). And log onto http://www.warpig.com/forums/fields/ to make sure there are no field near you.

Tippmans are good guns, but the price for uprages are more expensive than spyders or piranhas. A lp chamber for a spyder is $30, a lp kit for the 98c is $150. An e-frame for a spyder is $150 and a e-bolt conversion for the 98c is $250. I started on a 98c and I can say from experience that it is an excellent beginners marker. If you really want to put money into it, it can also be a VERY nice tourny marker. But to upgrade it beyond a new barrel, expansion chamber or remote, and a double trigger is useless for many people. I too never had a problem with mine, but when i began to get more serious, i got a pirahna pro ts g3 because it's where i wanted to go with upgrades on my 98c, but at 1/2 the price.

That is true about 95% of people with Tippmann 98's never have a problem with them! Also they are very easy to maintain! All you have to do is after a day of playing make sure it is clean and then give it a little oil and you should almost never have a problem! They also rarely chop balls. I have never personally broken a ball in mine. Not even with a stock barrel. There are also alot of really good upgrades for them and just about anyone that owns a Tippmann will tell you that they can even give high end semis a run for their money!
As far as draw backs go... Well the Tippmann 98's are a little heavier then most paintball markers and the stock barrel isn't very good but almost all stock barrels are the same way!

Also one other thing!
Tippmann's work great in cold weather! One thing I noticed with Pirahna's and Spiders are in cold weather they break alot of paint and freeze up and stop operating properly! (no offense to Spider/Pirahna owners!)
That is just something else you might want to keep in mind if you plan on playing in cold weather!

im not trying to flame tippmanns but me and everyone i play with that has had a tipppmann perfer spyders, i've owned a tippmann a pirahna and played a few days with a spyder compact before geting my cocker and found the spyder to be the best as far as performance the only gun i had a problem with was the pirahna i would not fire semi auto so i had to recock it after every shot. SO what you should do is get a spyder compact and a 12 inch teardrop barrel with 12 ounce co2 tank, that is a good setup for a newb and i would strongly recomed it over a tippmann.

i think you should go with a tippmann c98 or a angel!(haha jkin) i own a c98 and its been great to me ive also owned a compact i think they are both fine guns but if you get really into upgrading then go custom bc its the most upgradable gun the tippmann's main problem is field strip its a ***** for quickness but well worth it spyders blow some big di*k in cold weather i know from expeirence but the spyder shutter is a nicegun the are both quality if u are going for the "sniper" approach go c98 tha bolt is an ok design from the start jeeeeeeeee

I have a tippy98c and it's great. Cheap, never fails me, works great. I have alot of friends with Spyders and they break alot, no one I know with a m98c ever has a problem. Spyders are flashier and COME with more then the 98 does. It's really what you want, Spyders are flashier but prone to breaking down a little more (but they can be fixed, they are good guns just not as reliable) the m98 is plain old gun that will never let ya down and perform as well as any gun in it's price range. Tippmann has really good customer support, I think the m98c comes with a 2 year warranty because they are so confident in it...

ive never played with a tippmann in the cold but i have with a pirahna and a spyder the spyder never froze but the pirahna did once but to be fair it was like 20 degrees at 530 in the morning.

I'm going to be different and recomend a SL-68. You'll use less paint (cheaper), less air (cheaper), save on the gun it's self, and have just as much fun.
However, takes some of that money you saved and buy a crono.

if you are going to buy a pump buy a phantom/sniper2or3 or a sterling but do not buy a sl-68 my freind got talked into buying one and it sucked. It was very very inaccurate the balls would fly everywhere. Dont buy one. Oh and if you used the auto-trigger it would chop everyball even at low speed.

Part of the reason behind my sugestion of the sl68 was cost. I do not know the cost of the phantom, but I do know the sterling (which is hands down the best pump out of the box your gonna find) is more expensive then most spyders. And I belive the sniper is up there in cost as well.

Don't skimp out on safety. Get a decent mask with a thermal lense. A fogged mask sucks, you can't play if you can't see. I would recommend a JT Spectra. The nForcer looks nice, cheaper than the Spectra too. VForce seem cool too.
I don't have that much personal experience with other guns so pardon me for not commenting on those. I have a Spyder One, but they don't make them any more :) But do read the sticky threads in the forum. They're very helpful.

personally above a spyder and other markers like it i prefer the 98 but thats just preference for me here are some facts about both
98:pros:reliable,fairly accurate, works in all weather, very upgradable, doesnt chop very much, very easy to fix any problems, great for the wood player, rugged
cons:long, not flashy, cant field strip, isnt the easiest to upgrade, alot of people have them, most barrels and such that are available for other markers generally cost more
spyders:pros:compact,fair amount of upgrades,faster trigger pull,field stripped easily,flashy,fairly accurate,great for the speedball player,cheaper upgrades
cons:not good for woodball, isnt very rugged, breaks on occasion, cant be used in cold weather as well, isnt easy to fix bad internal problems, chops more
all in all its moslty about what u want. if there is anyone that thinks i incorrectly displayed some facts about each gun please dont clog up the forums flaming me pm me and i will talk about it just dont go crazy on me
hope i helped some and sorry about the long post,

spyders chop more? ive only choped a spyder once and ive probably put 4500 balls through a compact, my pirahna never choped(about 4000 balls run thru it). however ive put about 2000 tru a tippmann and choped like 5-6 times, my cousin has a 98 and chops 10-12 balls per case he runs thru it. Also spyders are the easiest guns to fix.

i use to have a compact 2000. I played in a one tourney with it stock and one tourney with an otp barrel. one time i used my friends model98... i played terrible with it, the accuracy was poor, and with the tank on it was very long.
thats my opinion

In short, a Spyder or Custom 98 are probably your best choices. As for spyders performing poorly in cold weather, I've never had any trouble with mine playing at 30*F. IMHO, the Spyder Compact 2000 is your best bet: cheap and highly upgradable.

Well, I am just a newbie but your best bet is to just look at the reviews... personally I went with the m98 becuz thats what the store sold (my town has no true p. ball store, just a gun shop that carries some). Also, I have heard stories about some spyders that won't work straight out of the box (sometimes)... Pretty, much, for me who knows next to nothing about p. ball guns I heard the m98 won't break and needs minimum maintenance, so it will work for me, sounded simple enough.

yeah tippmanns wont break but spyders wont either, you have to tryto break a spyder and they are very easy to fix if it does break. It will be good right out of the box.

I know people are going to luagh at me, but im going to tell you to go for a Stingray 2. The stingray 2 is a very versatle and upgradeable gun. There are endless mods for these guns, and a stingray can be picked up in the BEOG forums for 30 bucks.
Here are some Stingray Related Links:
www.beog.org - The Brass Eagle Owners Group- Great forums for buying, trading, and tech support.
AND
www.stinggroup.addr.com -Stingray owners internet group- A modders paradise, has full plans for every mod you can do, as well as expert tech advice.

stingray 2?? why a brass eagle, they are crap, for the same price you can get a spyder compact....But if you want to spend over a hundred, get a TIPPMANN model 98 custom, they rox and very upgradeable, very cheap, very durable/reliable....122 at piratepaintball.com.
I personally had a bad experience with my friends spyder 2000...but i do like spyder guns, they are great too. Either go with
~Spyder
~Tippmann
~Piranha
Research, browse around and ask questions.
Try to get the gun thats right for you.

I say get either a Tippmann 98 or a lower end spyder. The tippmann isn't as upgradable as the spyder, but it's cheaper and you can still put most anything that's important on it. Tippmanns also seem to be the most used gun for rentals, so clearly they're reliable. Spyders are also fairly reliable and simple so they can be fixed and upgraded easily.

Well Ive owned both guns and i prefer the Spyder Compact 2000 i own now. The Model 98s are big and bulky. If you but a 98 you would also need to get a "drop forward" on the spot. They are also really loud and they hog CO2 i probly get 100 more rounds out of a bottle of CO2 from my Compact then i did from the 98. However the Stock barrels for the 98s are better then the spyder stocks. So your have to get eather a crematic or a Dye barrel. Dont get me wrong i liked the Tippmans but the Spyder is more for me i like to sneak around, so i wen with a lighter setup.
Good Hunting

spyder vs. tippman
both r good guns
try them each and see which u like the best
i think u said there was no fileds near where u play
r there any pball stores?
go to one and hold them
get the one u like the best
but not from the store buy it online for way cheaper
also u might want to think of buying one used that already has upgrades on it for about the same price as a new one with nothing on it
also who the heck said tippmans were more the most upgradeable gun
Autocockers are the most upgradeable gun HANDS DOWN!!!!!!

most video games are nothing like paintball.
the closest game (and it's quite close), is rogue spear. specifically the Bunker level. I think that's why I'm so good at paintball and yet i've only had 2 years experience. I mean, I kick ***** when i go to the field and it's just wierd cause i can't figure it out. but i now think its cause i played so much rogue spear :-)
so if u want to develope ur paintballin skills, PLAY MORE ROGUE SPEAR
