Chopping- The balls don't feed fast enough and the bolt goes forward and crushes the ball.
Break- The ball splaters inside the barrel on it's way out.

If you have a detent that should prevent chopping though right?

no, the sole purpose of a detent is to keep the ball from:
A. rolling out the barrel when the gun is tipped down
B. moving so that the bolt will still hit it
C. double feeding
