View Full Version : Kind of Random Question

Whoops wrong forum, but while I'm here, I'm posting a question. It is known that Proto is owned by Dye. Where is the sense, though, in Dye releasing a lower cost marker that performs really well and competes with its flagship DM series? Same with Proto Pants and Masks.

Kind of a random place to ask this question;)

Yeah I was just in OT. But I changed it to something I was pondering earlier.

Why? I'm not paying $130 for pants, so I bought proto pants. Maybe I don't wanna spend $1000 on a marker, so I get a Proto. They aren't made to compete with eachother, they're made to offer products to 2 different markets.

While this is true, isn't there the risk of lowballing yourself? Say someone wants a new Matrix. Instead of going all out and purchasing a DM5, they'll be tempted to stop in the $800 range for a Proto.

You are paying for the name. More new players think Dye is better than Proto because Dye has been known for a while.
That's at least my take on it.
All I know is, after shooting more 'Trixes/DMs/PMs then I can remember, I'm glad I went with the Proto.

Proto stuff is quality, just a lot cheaper than what you pay for the Dye name.

Yes. Proto is just Dye's bid to another group of buyers. I love my Proto 3+2, and my new Proto Switch FS is a dream compared to my old ER X-ray.

It's a way they can compete in the "lesser" price range and still keep the Dye name as a premium label. I don't know about the Proto being better quality, because they actually are made for less money. If they do actually work better, that's just a fluke. If you look closely at the stiching and material used in their soft goods there actually is a difference of quality. That said, I still bought Proto knee pads because the quality alone wasn't worth the extra $20.
HP bought out Compaq some years ago and kept them as a more economical label so that HP could compete at both levels and not sully their name. Same with Banana Republic, GAP, and Old Navy. BR is a premium label and considerably better made clothing than Old Navy. They have different names so you don't hear "Let's get Campy" and think of Banana Republic. Different stores catering to different people. You can often find all three stores in the same mall, but few people would shop at all three. However, most people will shop at atleast one.
Anyway, it's quite common... this is just the first time it's happened in paintball.
