Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd
Locked and loaded for a slick sequel to last year's paintball hit.
by Chris Carle

August 3, 2005 - Last year's Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball was a bit of a surprise: an FPS without the blood, but with all the strategy and fast-paced action. After decent sales, a follow-up was a no-brainer. Enter Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd, a game which builds on the success of the original and includes more maps, more action and more strategy to the mix.

Recently, we got a chance to get our grubby mitts on the game at DJ Lethal's Hollywood studio, and Paintball Max'd is filling the shoes of its predecessor, and then some. There is a heavy emphasis on the multiplayer game this trip out, and for the first time, the series will offer split-screen. In addition, LAN and online multiplayer are available, and from what we played, the multiplayer game is quite addictive.

Part of the reason for this is that Greg Hastings, the sport's top pro, is fully integrated into the creative process, in addition to being one of the videogame's biggest fans (of course you are, buddy… your name is on the box!). He consulted on every aspect of the game's creation, tweaking the realism, offering suggestions on strategy, and generally making sure everything lives up to the intensity of the sport.

One of the major changes this time out is the ability to set up "plays" beforehand with the "Breakout Manager." This will allow you to direct your CPU teammates' positions right off the bat. Using the headset, you can also command your team a la SOCOM with spoken commands. This works exceptionally well, and can really benefit you in the heat of the action.

We played a variety of maps during the event/tournament, ranging from tournament-style man-made set-ups to wilder, more free-form forest maps. In addition to the 213 available field layouts, gamers will have an opportunity to create their very own maps with the creation feature. There are three field sizes, 37 object and bunker types, and 10 object textures/skins to work with. In addition, if you want to create half a field and duplicate it exactly on the other side (to make things fair), there is a mirror function that allows you to do just that.

On the presentation side of things, a lot of work has gone into securing the most realistic licenses available. There are new markers from major paintball manufacturers Kingman, Tippmann and WGP, in addition to the gear from the first game.

The soundtrack will also feature some surprises, including an exclusive track by DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit and B-Real of Cypress Hill called "Play For Real." Puddle of Mudd and Mellowman Ace will also appear. Stay tuned to IGN Music for more soundtrack info, and watch IGN Xbox for more on the game as it nears release.

Thirded. Also, I think that it's like if Tony Hawk gets a game, you have to be the best to get a game deal. So wrong, I think that I'm going to make Greg Ostertag's NBA 2007. I'll see if they think that Ostertag's the best :dodgy:.
