Who here would say that paintball is the #1 xtreme sport in the united states today? or in any other country.

it's not a matter of opinion. paintball isn't the largest 'extreme' sport in the country, or in any other country.

Paintball is starting to go mainstream. I would think that some of the major events (HB, WC) would have full 3 day coverage on cable in the next 5 years. I mean come on, they already do it for Tennis and Golf, and we all know how exciting that is to watch.

You obviously don't know the time and preparation it takes to commit to play in the PSP, NPPL, CFOA etc. Most pros practice 3 times a week at the very least. If you did, you wouldn't say paintball isn't a sport. Woods and Rec isn't, it's just a hobby. But tournament paintball is a sport.
insanepenguin
08-07-2005, 04:56 PM
Just because it takes time to prepare for something doesn't mean its a sport. Who cares if people play paintball five times a week and practice shooting faster, and break-outs, and playing tight in bunkers, how does that qualify it as being a sport?
My first post was actually more joking than anything, because a lot of us paintballers get really upset if someone just calls it a game. I really don't care what we call it and Im sorry for the flame war that will undoubtedly ensue.
edit: Also, you said rec ball isnt a sport. How can that be. If you play baseball with your friends, arent you playing a sport. But if you play paintball with friends, your not?
coolrazer
08-07-2005, 05:01 PM
Everything that I can think of that takes time to perfect, and that you train for, is called a sport. I mean cheerleading is classified as a sport. You can't tell me that cheerleading isn't more intense than tournament paintball.
EDIT: If you just go out and play baseball with your friends, or go and play some football or something like that, it's called recreation. If you go out and play rec, its recreation. Now if you are playing for a team, practicing every week and competing, it's a sport.
insanepenguin
08-07-2005, 05:04 PM
Who cares how 'intense' something is, that doesnt make it a sport. Is being a soldier a sport? That takes a lot of training and practice, and its pretty intense too, but im guessing most people dont classify it as a sport.
coolrazer
08-07-2005, 05:08 PM
The reason that takes training and practice it to keep you alive. You don't face that playing sports. If you lose playing a sport, you're not going to die. Comparing fighting a war and playing a sport is like comparing apples to oranges.

According to the dictionary (Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.) paintball is a sport. But it says physical activity, so that means nascar isn't a sport, its just driving. While most people classify nascar as a sport, some don't. Its the same thing with paintball, sure according to the dictionary its a sport, but according to the dictionary, a lot of "sports" aren't "sports". Lets just agree to disagree on this one.
Agree?

Fine, because I also believe Nascar is a sport, but I don't want to get into that as well.

I belive nascar is a sport to, and I wasnt really arguing that paintball wasnt a sport, just that people views on what makes it a sport are different.

I really don't understand the reason why paintball is tagged as being an "Extreme Sport." Aside from the generally uninformed John Q Public's idea of paintball, and the whacky hairdo's we see at the tourneys, paintball is not all that extreme. And, unless I'm mistaken, most extreme sports are individual based. Paintball relies on team work, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
Having been an avid snowboarder for 5 years, I can say that paintball gives me a wholely different rush than whizzing down the mountain all by myself, getting air and being free.

These days, people often use the word "extreme" to describe something that is not mainstream or widely known. The word has pretty much lost its original meaning.

Driving at 200 mph for 4 hours or more in temperatures exceeding 110* F constitutes phyisical activity.

Yes it is. Obviously you have never driven 200mph for more than 4 hours in temperatures exceeding 110* F, because if you had, you would realize how phyiscally draining it is. NASCAR is a sport.

You have no idea how draining it is drive that long in high temps. So shut up and realize that physical activity also means an activity in which mass energy is consumed.

Theres a difference between 90* outside and 110* inside.
If you do anything that makes you tired and sometimes uncomfortable, it is a phyical activity.
And you contradicted your self in that post.

Paintball is a sport, just as nascar is, poker is, even chess. The definition of a sport is more then the simple definition yall gave. Websters dictionary begins by describing it pretty much the way yall have, but then refers you to Britannica whichs goes on to say "...recreational or competitive activities that involve a degree of physical strength or skill." I'd bet money that if we continued to examine what the word truly means that it would add "...in the pursuit of a specific goal/mark."
All those sports mentioned fall under that description. One may not require physical strength but it will require extensive skill, and vice versa.
As for Paintball being an extreme sport. Well it goes on to describe them like this "...sporting events characterized by high speed or high risk."
Speedball, Woods or Rec paintball play definitely contains a much higher level of risk then any average sport. Now because anyone here may play on a egular and never get hurt, or because you may feel that getting shot doesn't hurt doesn't change that FACT. Nor does it change simply because you personally see woods/rec ball as too slow. It, Paintball, IS a high speed/high risk sport.
