Ok...so I shoot a G3 Pirahna and I have upgraded the daylights out of it. I would like to get a top end gun, but Spending a $K on a gun seems excessive if your not in tourneys....So now you know my mindset.
I am at my son's little league game and one of his team mates is talking about his DM5....judging by the amount of time he claims to have had it, I guess it cost mom and dad about $1,000 to $1,200....He's 9 years old!!! Who gives a 9year old a thousand dollars??? This is the reason the sport is so expensive....Becuase of people dumpinmg money into it without using their common sense :eyes:

It is fun....though I prefer it in the 11 to 14 category...at nine it closer to just sad. Worse, I think his parent have done him a disservice, because he will ot get to get a good appreciation of the game and loose interest....
And as far ar the age thing....we live near mexico...he could practically drink at that age

you're way off, bub. this sport is cheaper than it's ever been. paintballs are being produced and sold in larger quantities, which reduces the cost. they're also being produced more efficiently and the materials are more cost effective. new technology makes the old technology obsolete and consequently cheaper. mechanical spyders used to go for $200-300, now there are only a handfull breaking a c-note. so, how exactly have young players made things more costly for you? :eyes: by the way, giving a kid a high end gun is no more a waste than putting more than $150 into a blowback.

gonna have to agree here.
sure, it would be nice to have something uber expensive for free when you're young...but ya know what? life isn't fair, who the hell cares if this kid is shooting a DM5 and you have a piranha, since you apparently are jealous of the kid since you made a thread about it, go buy your son a DMC, cheapen your feelings of self worth and just do it.
its really not a big deal, heck, there is a guy just out by me at a local field w/ a new blue DMC and an entire C5 gear set, why do I not care? because he can't play worth a damn. paintball is fun, shut up and just go play, quit whining on internet forums.

Admittedly, paintballs themselves have gotten cheaper, but the high end for guns seems to comtinue to creep upward....what is the price of a G7?
As far as putting money into a blowback, what is so bad about that? The only two things that my fish falls behind in is speed (soon to be fixed with a t-board), and kick, which I have already reduced a lot and will be dropping more in about 2 months. It is already VERY accurate, +/- 2 fps on consistancy, and incredibly gas efficient. Blowbacks get beat up on because of hype and their less than ideal initial set up. once set up right they are quite good. My pirahna has a regular diet of $400+ markers....and in less than 2 months, I will start spoiling it with $700 ones ;)

Yeah but he's 9.
My look on the subject:
He shouldn't play untill he gets into 5th or 6th grade and then he should be put on a Tippmann or something like it (choose one of the many low end blowback models) for a few years. There are too many kids running around with DM5's, Nerves, various high-end markers. In my mind it just plain helps to learn how to play on a low-end to start. I played on a Piranha for about 3 years before I bought my Proto.
It just plain helps to start smaller.

my point exactly....He should learn how to play and shoot before seeing how much of his parents money he can spend.
As far as what I have shot and played with...I listed them on another thread, and I'm not in the mood to do it again here...They were better, no doubt....$1,000 better, heck no, $500 better, a couple but not most of them.

you guys are being way too closed-minded about this. do you honestly have a good reason that someone new, even a 9 year old, shouldn't own a high quality marker? hell, if i could've started with a really great marker, i would have in a heartbeat. like it's been said before, who cares what marker someone has if they don't know how to use it? how's it hurting you? who are you to decide that new players should follow a certain heirarchy of markers? a dm5 owner is a dm5 owner, and the more of them there are, the more upgrades are going to be made for them. and the more upgrades there are, the more competition there will be. and the more competition there is, the better the parts will be produced. quit being so insecure about your gear and finances, and quit complaining about things that you can't change and don't affect you.

But a beginner in paintball who gets a DM5 for his first gun?! That's kind of over doing it...Especially when he's 9 years old.

As a parent, my eleven year old son has lost 3 jackets, 2 school books, 2 lunchboxes, and a packpack...grand total of $140 over his lifetime....I couldn't imagine handing him $1,000 to lose or break. Would you actually hand a 9 year old a $1,000 bill?
As far as the effect on me....as I said before...Price. Price is controlled by supply and demand. The more people willing to spend $1k + on a marker, the more of them will be made...and if demand goes down then manufacturers will get a clue and lower their prices to accomidate....Personally I think the ION is an example a high end company looking to break into the lower price demographic. And there prices are more accross the board than just makers. I was talking to the owner of a local pb store, who said that local sales have tapered off over the last year to two years, not just with him but the other stores locally. At the same time I have friends who have gotten out complaining about the price of the sport, and I have noticed some of the prices creep up at the local stores, no doubt to compensate for the lost sales.
As far as there being any heirchy in guns, I think that the purposes of starting out with a cheaper gun are many. first, noobs are tough on guns....better to tear up a $100 gun than a $1,000 one. Two, it gives them an opprtunity to learn to shoot, not see how much paint they can throw down field, personnaly I think someone really wanting to become good at the sport should start with a pump ( btw there are some pro teams that practice with them) to learn to make every shot count. Third, the lower price makes it safer for them to fiddle with the gun and they get to learn how to take care of them...If they screw it up, oh well, buy another one.
Please understand, I am not bashing the kid...If someone wanted to buy me one, i'd let them....though DM5 wouldn't be my first choice. I am bothered by the parents though. I think that they are overindulging their child and will probably stop funding him at some point after they have spent enough on it...saying something foolish like "we already spent $1,000 on this sport, now you want more every week to play?"
