Alright, I wasn’t sure if I should post this in the “newbie” forum or this one. I’m really not a newb, but certainly inexperienced. (playing about 2 years)

I’m upgrading my marker, Im thinking probably to an A-5 with a flatline barrel, among a few other mods. I’m sort of confused about barrel kits though, I’m wondering if I should get a kit rather than the flatline. Can anyone provide some insight to which is better, and how exactly barrel kits work?

I play woods ball and scenario games almost exclusively.

Thanks,

First off, 2 years of experience isn't that noobish. I personally consider 2+ years an intermediate player. Although you can have "2 years" of experience and only play like a noob way in the back totally lost.

About your upgrading to a better marker. I would go with a refurbished spyder imagine from actionvillage for $64, a fraction of what an A-5 would cost with a flatline. I would go with the spyder because, first off extremely cheap, extremely upgradeable, fast for stock, and somewhat good quality. A-5: barrel, regulator, quevs, and all the little internal stuff. Imagine: barrel, trigger, grips, bolts, feednecks, everything you can possibly IMAGINE. Overall, the imagine is cheaper and more upgradeable than the A-5.

Yes. a barrel kit would be much better than just a single flatline. I would consider getting a freak, evil, or a custom products barrel kit. With kits, there are more possible paint variations than just a one piece barrel that only has a .689 or different bore size. With kits, they come with inserts. Inserts are different sized backs that include anywhere from .675 bores to .693 bore sized barrels. The inserts adapt to the front, which is usually 6'' to 10'' with the backs being from 4'' to 6''. So all a kit does is make it possible to have more than one type, sized, and make of a paintball, rather than to only be able to have one or two types of paint.

A-5=price of Ion. Flatline=price of cheap Hpa tank. So yeh Ion.

I would just spend $40 for a cheap 1 piece barrel. CP 1 piece, Evil Driver, SP Progressive, Lapco bigshot, etc. You don't need a kit for an A-5 and the flatline is a waste of money and pointless.

An A-5 w/ Flatline is a mighty fine gun; I can attest to that. Let's set up the scenario: On a table is a quality barrel kit or a Flatline w/ $30 1 piece barrel. They are free, but you can only take one. I am taking the Flatty with 1 piece barrel. The next person might take the barrel kit. It goes on and on like this. The point is that it's all personal preference. I personally cannot live without the Flatline, but somobody else may hate it.

Don't let anyone persuade you to the ION just because THEY like it. That doesn't mean you will like it. I have a certain liking to the A-5 that hasn't been replaced with my ION.

Woodsball you can't get any better then a Tippmann. They are very durable and shoot really well. My friend has a Custom Pro with cyclone feeder and SP progressive barrel and he loves it. I have used it a few games and it is nice but I would take my stock Ion over that any day. I let him shoot it, not use it in a game but just shoot it, and he said he is going to replace his Tippy with an Ion now.

On to barrels. A barrel kit is nice if you go to a new field and don’t know what they sell or you have a gun that doesn’t have ball detents and the ball could fall out with out the right size paint and barrel match. I have been thinking long and hard about what to get for my Ion and I was going to get the J&J edge kit for $150 but I think I might just get the J&J 2piece ceramic and use xball silver paint. I play woodsball so I can buy me own paint. For the price of the kit I can get a 2 piece barrel, a case of paint, a trigger, and a new feedneck.
