male female and regs

First off would someone explain to me what these male and female thingys are.Also, does a reg raise or lower pessure?:dunce:

for your first question they are two parts that connect together and the part with the hole is fmale and the long one is male (not being funny here ) that was a very bad description but
a reg regulates the pressure so it does both depending on wut u set it to

um when you screw a tank into a reg is there a hissing sound?
I have a shutter, and sometimes it hisses when i screw it in and sometimes it doesnt...most times it does though...what is that?

A leak somewhere, yes. Try coating each connection with teflon tape or loctite.
