You need something like Autodesk Inventor, Auto CAD, Solid Works, etc...

I got lucky, I know a mechanical engineer who gave me the 2005 version of Solid Works because the company had upgraded to the 2006 version. The price tag on something like that is in the thousands of dollars, so my only advice is to find a machining company and see if you can acquire their old software that they no longer can use.

How long would it usally take to find how to use it to make a gun.

Yep. You can use 3dsmax(gmax is free), solidworks, autocad, maya, etc.

Heres and example done in AutoCAD(Final render took 16 hours):

When I was in CADD class last year, I finished the Autodesk Unit early so my teacher let me spend the rest of the year making a working model of my Impulse, and let me experiment with milling patterns. Its a pretty straightforward program if you go through the tutorials. I wish I still had those files...

Ya, in my class we used Cad to make a car engine and all its components. If i can find the file ill show you mine from a 2000 dodge viper

Is there any way you could ask the author of those drawings how he reverse engineered that and got measurements for all those irregular shapes and curves? I would LOVE to draw my Autococker on SolidWorks, but I don't think I could deminsion things off using just a set of calipers, lol.

And I originally learned how to use design software on Autodesk Inventor since that's what my highschool uses and I'm still making the transistion to SolidWorks.

You want a free copy of 3DS Max or AutoCAD? *cough* Limewire *cough**cough*

You do realize how much they cost right? Approximately $1200 w/Student License.

Anybody used Pro Engineering (Pro-E) It's what I'm learning in one of my ME classes. I don't like it as much as I did solid edge, but it's not too bad.

In a previous class I modeled my old blow back marker w/ solid edge. But then my home computer crapped out and I lost the program, and files.

Now I'm trying to get a copy of Solid Works which would be awesome. Drawing stuff in CAD is so awesome, I'm so good at it.

Who actually still uses limewire, its so small time in the download world. That and its full of viruses.

Yeah my shop class uses AutoCAD,inventor,3dsmax. Havent used solidworks but i might give it a shot when i get more experience at using 3dsmax, AutoCAD is really simple because i have been doing it in shop for 4 years as part of the course.

Do any of you want to start some kind of project because I have a design thats functional and makes the body and weight of the gun less then whats out now but some things I still cant work out and dont know what the function or actual look is going to be,because I dont know how to do that animation stuff.PM me if you do and are perferbly my age or not that older than me.

Limewire, viruses? The two don't mix unless "xxx" is entered in the download bar. That's why I don't have viruses... I'm not that deprived. Besides, it's called playb - er... yeah.

Those are mine, and no they did not take 16 hours to render. Only about 20 sec to render those. They were done on solidworks not autocad. Autocad sucks.

That one rendered for about 40 hours. After bout 4 hours I have a decent render, but since the software is almost like a log funchion the last little 5% to completion takes the extra 30 hours. If you guys would like any help on the subject let me know.
