the best think about being a newbie is that you can get away with stuff the experienced players can't ... "Gee Mr. Ref, I didn't know you weren't supposed to wipe that stuff off ... I didn't want it to stain my new shirt."

I consider anyone a newbie who has been playing for less than a year.

MuckRaker
01-09-2001, 06:54 PM
I've been playing a little more than two years, but only since Oct. have I gotten serious about it, buying equipment, making it a point to be on the field every weekend. I consider myself a Newbie Novice, kinda like a Srgt. Major.

ElectricHead
01-09-2001, 08:53 PM
less than a year? i guess im a newbie, but im not someone to stand around and watch my "experienced" teammates do all the fighting. and im not someone to run and camp somewhere. and at least i know my guns and stuff... some people are just stupid

MuckRaker
01-09-2001, 10:04 PM
Not stupid, just lacking in experience. Hell, I'm still learning. Let's just say you're more "seasoned" than most players.

I can be considered a newbie. I have been deer hunting for five years. I'm sure that could apply to paintball in some way shape or form. I not a stupid newbie either. I don't run around with a target on my back and "veteran ball boy" printed on my jersey. But I'll take the hit for the experienced player. (I've done it before)

Im not anewbie ne more, but the first time i played at this field with some guys, they called me that, and i was like what the hell? So, i went on a aone on one with a guy who had played for 5 years with his trgieed out mag, and beat him with my stock shutter, it was awsome. From then on they never called me a newbie, but untill a little while ago, i would have considered myself one, cause i jsut started serioiusly playing and upgrading, etc. There was this one time i shot my own guys, but i did it with that kid who was playing for 5 years. It was 5 on 5, and we were all getting the piss shot oout of us. Two of our guys ran up, but had to retreat, and came towards the bunler me and the kid with the mag were already behind, Then, the other guy on our team called, theyre bunkering, so when the two guys on my team came to duck behind our bunker, we killed them with paint, i mean, they were wearing camo, like everyone, and when they ran there guns were up, along with the 10 year old newbie screaming theuyre bunkering, so what else were we gonna do? It was actually kind of funny to think im not too bad at the sport but i still managed to shoot my own guys.

hahha sall good. When i realized that I was getting good, it was awkward. Seeing all these newbies go crazy when i bunker someone..hehe it's a wierd feeling having like 12 year olds looking up to you and trying to copy your moves..haha i'm not cocky thogh like some "expirienced" players. I help the newbies when their gun breaks down or if they have a ball break, i lend them my squeegie. I guess it's because when i was new to pb, this guy with a mag did the EXACT same thing for me.

A damn fool
02-02-2001, 02:35 PM
Yeah, the first time i played, the guys were real nice to me, and then when they saw i could actually play, it was actually prety cool. Its defiently something u got to do, help the newbies, because the bettter they get, the more fun the games are. Also, when u play for the first time, u dont know what to expect, i mean, all u know is ur going to shoot at eachother, it helps to be taught the ropes by someone who knows what they are doing. I really ahte the cocky guys who think theyre all hot too. I know this one kid, and the first day he got his cocker, he thought he was gonna be the best perosn out there, but he got shot in the guna, and his gun ****ed up, which he deserved. It was real funy

hahaha what a dork. Also, like what happened to me. If someone is nice to you on your first day, then you're gonna treat a newbie the same way, and maybe that newbie, when he gets good, will treat a newbie the same way he treated you..so be a good person and help those poor newbies out! :D

Ya, help us poor newbies out. :) By the way, I think "newbie" is more of an attitude, or lack thereof, by new OR experienced players. A seasoned veteran could be more of a newbie than someone who has been playing only for a few months... ya know what I mean? It all depends on your learning curve and your ability to take in everything around you. Deep huh? ;)

I noticed for the first time Saturday That I'm getting Groupies ... I don't mind helping the young guns out, but it's weird when I'm on the field and two or three kids come up and say stuff like, "Where are you going, oh yeah, well, we're gonna follow you."

There's a couple of them that I like to help ... They're pretty good players, they're definetly interested in the sport and they Listen to what you tell them. There's one though, I don't dislike him, but it's obvious he's only there for the wrong reasons ... Trying to impress people. In a couple of years he's the one you'll have to watch for cause He'll be shooting hot or wiping or doing some other stupid Crap.

I started playing in '85 and played consistant for like 8+ years. Due to $ i kind of stopped playing. I now have $ so I am back but for only like 6 months. I learned by using a stock pump gun with 12grams. I still use a wonderfully accurate and major distance pump gun but am finding myself almost totally out gunned now that semiautos have the same distance and accuracy.... It is fun to walk onto a field where I am not known and they see that I am playing with a pump so they discount me as almost not a player! after the first game that I have taken out the lions share of the other team the respect I am given is head swelling!LOL But since I have been away for a long time am I a newbie again? Oh and one quick question.. I am thinking of getting an automag due to simplicty, quality and accuracy/distance! This a good idea?

Sid

Your not a newbie..your a geezer! lol..j/k.. Man next thing I know i'll be waving my cain at mouthy kids to get off my lawn...I better be nice.

Pumps are sweet..but only in the right environment. Like thick and large fields, its awesome. But speedball is harsh, cause there's no where to go.

Automags are very nice.. but you have to use constant air or nitrogen. Theres no way around it unfortunatly.

Solid! thanks! and ya.. its getting harder and harder to play with a pump! I am also gettin older and older!LOL

troy, auto mag is a good buy,its the 3nd gun i have, its easy to maintain, put a few drop of gun oil in before you play, shoot it off with the barrel off, lock the barrel and your rocking. If you use CO2 get a remote for it.Get a J&J barrel for it also. You'll like how easy it is to just gas and blast

I've been playing for about a year and a half so I guess I'm not a newbie but I'm still amazed by all the really GOOD players I run into at the fields I guess I know what you guys are talking about, helping dumb kids like me i was at a field in Raleigh NC about 3 weeks ago and there were these actually really NICE people there one of the guys even let me shoot his tricked out purpleish angel! i was afraid I'd drop the thing or something so I was a bit nervous but I don't think I've ever seen people like that before they didn't let any of it go to their heads, the guns, the team sponsors, the fact that they were actually really GOOD. they really help the impression I got about that field even though they aren't regulars there. I'm definitely going back now. Most of the other fields I went to before then were filled with little punks about my age, 15, and they pissed me off so bad that I never went back there again. I really can't stand little pricks like that.

There are no dumb kids ... Misguided youth maybe, but no dumb kids. If the Old Farts like me (and the Young Showoffs like TL) don't help you new guys out, we might as well kiss this expensive pasttime goodbye.

I guess in a way that's why I help out the new guys ... not so much to point them in the right direction on the field, but to ensure that the younger guys coming up behind me will have a Good Feel for the sport, and not act like Arses on the field.

Yeah Im a newbie since Christmas.Im 45 got myself a Spyder Shutter and my 14 year old son a Piranha STS G2.We have been playing mainly in the woods behind our house. Just recently played all day at a local feild. I love the sport. Its so much fun playing with my son and other Fathers and sons.I have alot to learn but Im getting better. I have to laugh when I play with these kids that think they will own me becasue Im "an Old man". Ha I can run and hide and paint them all just the same.I can hide in the woods they never see me. Until they walk by and get painted.

I learned a lot at the paintball field. I learned that most newbies tend to bunker in one place. They are afraid to run towards the action.I play with a friend that is in his 50s with some 10+ years experience. He plays aggresivley, run to the action and paint them up. He is good. HE says" your not playing if you stay in one place". I agree.I get impatient waiting behind a wall for some action so I run forward firing all the way. I took some hits but I painted some others up also.

The most frustrating thing I found is that most newbies will not work with you to out flank some one that is bunkering.I was new but I understand the basic tactics of outflanking and manuvering.I love War and History so I understand basic manuvers.I tried to get some teamates to come with me and work together but most newbies want to go off by them selves. Then they end up getting painted and your by yourself with no help.

We played capture the flag at the field. I had some temates with me and we got real close to the other teams base. I was yelling out to my teamtes to move up with me. I had a great spot with good cover and could shoot at most of the opposing men. Next thing I know I look araound and all my teamates are gone. They all got shot so Im all alone trying to take out like 4 other guys.
I hit a few but of course I got out too.

So my next step I think is to form a team so we can work together on some basic moves. I have played with some of my sons friends and there were about 5 of them that have played well together as a team. They worked well together and shot my team all up when we played in our woods.

I think thats the next step up from newbie, team work. What do you all expeirienced players think?

Yes, Welcome to the wonderful world of Rec Ball. I'm not sure what causes the younger Newbies to act this way, but what you describe is not an isolated event. We encounter it a lot at our local field also. I think a lot of it has to do with "Looking Cool," They just don't want to look bad in the eyes of their peers, especially the ones who've been playing for a while. Plus, they probably thing Old Farts like us don't know what we're talking about (which is funny since I normally last a lot longer in games than those who don't listen to me ... go figure).

That's the ticket ... If you keep going to the same field, you'll end up finding more people in and around your age. That's been my experience. After playing the same field for seven months, I've fallen in with a group of guys and we try to meet every weekend. We're unofficially a team and we stay together all day. That way we don't have to rely on the Unwieldy Newbies who just want to waste paint and stay hidden behind bunkers.

By the Way, Fox, where in Florida are you located? I live in the Tampa Bay area and play at ThunderBay Paintball in Oldsmar (outside of Tampa). I'm 36 and take my 11-year-old son to the field on occassion (depends on how well he did in school that week. Paintball can be a great motivator off the field).
