I went to play speedball today. It was my first time but I did okay (I took all of my milsim gear off, I didn't want to carry that much weight around). When I first went to the chrono to get my gun set at 285 fps, my first couple of shots were chrono'ed at 360-380 fps. I could'nt beleive it. I'm pretty sure it was'nt the chrono because it was doing just fine on my 2 friend's guns (Diablo Wraths). What was even stranger was, The manager of the field and I could not get it too go lower than 350 fps, no matter how much I turned it down!!! Finally, We got an experienced player too get it working at 280 fps, but it took a whole hopper (It was a team practice day). Could it have been acting screwed up like that because of my 18" barrel?(that would make sense to me). Has anyone else ever had a problem like this with a 98c? The velocity seemed unreal for a gun like mine.
It was a fun day, and I plan on playing speedball now more rather than woodsball.
Check the spring in it. It may have been that you had a high velocity spring in it. The barrel probly had little to do with it but you never know.

I have not done anything to my 98 performance-wise. I geuss it could've just come with a high-velocity spring or something. Is there a break in period or something, something that might help me lower velocity easier.
Edit: Sorry, this is off topic, but I noticed you have a 45/4500 Pure Energy tank. Is it a pretty good tank? I'm thinking about getting one.

360-380 isn't uncommon for a 98c. I've seen them that high many times. You really need to screw the velocity adjuster a ways in before it will significantly lower the velocity.

Thank's spy. I turned it all the way in then all the way out, velocity still remained in the same region. Must have been their chrono now that I think about it.
Hunter2: 564, wow! My co2 had just been filled, that could have also been a reason, because later throughout the day, I was having to arc my shots. Remember, this was a small speedball field...

It could be the chronro because you will visibly notice the difference between 360 and 260. Screwing the velocity adjuster all of the way in will basically cut off the gun from shooting, so you would have noticed.

Wow:eek:
I never thought a paintball gun could ever reach that velocity. I have personal seen mid 400's on 98's with overfilled tanks but WOW. Makes you wonder how fast one of those 4500PSI tanks could get your velocity to if its reg was "messed" around with. Only thinking theoretically... of-course.

Yea its a great little tank. Ive actually tried it on my dads 98 that still has the stock ASA and it feels awesome. Only bad part about them is the cost.

Wonder how fast a marker could shoot before the paintballs broke from the impact of the air...

Thats a really good question. Maybe A math genius could figure it out.

Thanks. The one I was looking at ended up goingfor $150 used.

It would depend on the kind of paint your using. Like Thick Shell vs Thin Shell.
I'm guessing probably 650 FPS would just rip a paintball to bits when it hit the air. Its just a wax shell with some paint in it but it would be interesting for someone to test this out. But are there normal paintball chronograph's that can read a object going that fast?

My brother's 98C did something like that once, you just have to keep messing with the velocity thing for a while. We had it fixed in about 15 minutes, wasn't that bad.
I think around 685+ would do it, I'll go try it out next time I play. ;)

What kind of force does it take to shatter a mask (lol). A ref at my local field got shot in the face (mask on) at 310FPS and the paintball hit the lower part of his mask with enough force that it went through the slits in his mask and cut his lip. He was unable to talk for 20 mins because it was so swollen. Thats 310... double that speed... Holy ****

I'm pretty sure the velocity it takes to shatter a mask is in the low 300's. Most fields require around 280 fps as a maximum. My dad had the same thing happen to him, only he got hit with a Talon. It went through his mask and the shell slit his lip open, cheap paint.

actually, JT tests their mask designs with little steel balls (like the slingshot kind) at 500fps before they even consider selling them. the crap about getting a new lens if ur shot at <20 ft is just that, crap. i have shot polycarbonate lenses before with a shotgun, and all it did was make little dimples in the lens. it didn't break. shotgun shells are around 1300 fps, so there is no way a paintball could possibly shatter a mask.
unless the paint is frozen or the mask is defective there is no way.
now i have been shot before and had the paint cut mu lip, but that was because the paint went through the little slits in the mask.

How far away from the lens when you fired a shotgun at it? I would think a paintball could shatter a lens if it was crap pain and being fired at a decent velocity (but less then 1300 feet per second). I'm no physicists but the reason for that is a paintball is larger and heavier then a shotgun pellet. A larger object (paintball) delivers move force over a larger area then a smaller object (pellet) even with huge differences in velocity of both objects. The larger area affect maybe just enough to shatter a lens. It would not break off into shards but would be like that of a car window in a traffic accident. It would just crack and shatter but not break, until after a few shots. But this is my guess at physics.

i was at about ten yards, and you do have a point about the size, but the lead shot gun pellets (7 1/2 shot size) are way more dense than a paintball. and my physics teacher gave me a formula. if you double the speed, then you quadruple the force. the mass is not so much a factor although it is one. if a paintball sized piece of lead went 1300 fps it would do more damage than a small lead pellet. paintballs are designed to break, so they lose all of their force when they do so.

Need to brush up on my physics. Thats pretty extreme though. That a mask can take that. 564FPS is pretty damm fast... my one question is what classifies a firearm... I always thought it was the speed you could fire the projectile at... 700FPS + is what defines a firearm... If true... 564fps is to close for my comfort...

there is a mask at my local paintball store that has a sign above it and it said the mask was shot at 330 fps, and the bottom corner is totally gone, so im thinking around 330? would break one

If i get an old mask for cheap ill see how fast a paintball has to go to bust it

Well, anything over 500 fps is considered a firearm.
Personally, I wouldn't want to be hit with anything going that fast.

The 18" barrel won't make your gun shoot hotter. If anything, the extra friction would slow down your shots.
Do you have the low pressure kit on your gun? I've seen a gun with the LP kit installed, but no reg and using CO2 so the input pressure was WAY high for what it needed. That marker was shooting very hot and once we put the regulator on it, it was fine.
If the hot gun problem persists, you'll either have to clip a couple rings off your drive spring or get a regulator to lower the input pressure. The reg would be a better fix, but also more expensive.
