APG had a section on Woods or Speedball. I would like to continue that discussion here at PBREVIEW.

There's actually a really great discussion about the exact same topic going on in the "Rec paintball" forum. Check it out, it's worth a look

i like the woods because it requires more skill and you have an oppourtunity to rip up angels with your stingray (not sayin it happened but if it did it would be in woods def not speedball)

Yeah that is one thing that is cool about speedball. And I do appollagize for making this poll. I looked around and couldn't find one like it. Then I posted this one and found two others right after that. Sorry guys, but your opinions are still welcome. Man I love Paintball, though, both, but woods is better. I'm just in the process of learning speedball, it's a lot more intense than I thought it would be. It's fast and you have to think quick. I love it. Thanx for the votes.

I like speedball for the reason he said. I hate having my 200 bucks worth of equipment painted by a stingray. But then again I hate getting shot in the gun anywhere. Equipment counts. I think that's smart parts, but I like it anyway. Speedball makes woods it's beeoch? I like that. I played woods for about six months after first starting and then played a game of speedball at the end of the day. It's hard to go back to the woods. There are more and more people voting for sppedball coarses at the field I go to. I don't care about spectators for the most part one way or the other, I just like to play fast and hard.

Wood are great and all, and speedball has its time and place , but the best place I have ever played was in AZ. up in the mountians. t is just super cool to run and hide behind boulders and there are lot's of elevation changes, very cool.

I strongly disagree. Very strongly, strongly times 10. I think Robbo summed up my feelings best in PGi when he said
"The Sup'Air ball type game is now growing ever faster and I think now may be the time to go over a few aspects of the basics of the game that really only apply to the new style of play. In a general sense there isn't too much difference, ie. we still have to eliminate the opposition and secure their flag, but the means to do that are slightly different. Greater skills, faster reflexes, more planning and better training are needed to be successful.
Now I'm sure there will be a bunch of people who'll say just as much skill was needed to win games in the woods; just as fast reflexes were needed and so on; that's bullsh.t! The woodland game as it was played was never sophisticated in any sense; true, you needed reflexes and skill, but nowhere near as much as you do to win a Sup'Air ball game. So, why is there this greater need to refine skill levels and reflexes? First off, the game is a lot more condensed, players are closer together off the bat and after the primary positions have all been occupied, the front line players are no more than 10 yards apart.
Since the distance between opposing players has decreased, so has the amount of time you have to take a shot. If you think about it, how much easier is it to take someone's head off from 10 yards as against the normal 30 yards you would have found in the woodland game?
You better be quick or you can say goodbye to your armband pal. So it is easy to see why our reflexes need to be quicker. And with that need for quicker reflexes comes an even greater need to be more skilful. This can be manifested in the way you walk he fields, the way you prepare for each game, the drills you practice and much more. I shouldn't think it stretches too many people's brains to appreciate one of the fundamental requirements of any Sup'Air ball game is to choose attainable primary cover points. You have to run these out to see what bunkers you can get to without getting your *** lit up. Once you know where you're all going, it's best to have some idea of where you're going to shoot. "
That's backing up the statement, How would you backup that woods takes more skill? More patience, yes, but skill, not really. Not that I'm bashing the woods game, it's fun, broader scope, and the lightning fast game of speedball isnt for everyone, I just wonder how it could be argued that woods requires more skill.

Dude, I read that! That dude is awsome with his articles. Robbos guide to becoming a paintball god!!! Thanx twich. I forgot about that until you mentioned it. Speedball requires hella skill. You have to think quick and play a more technical game full of skill and reflexes to be good at speedball. That's why it's the sport and woods is rec. They say anyone can play paintball, but their talking about rec. Not everyone can play speedball, that's why it's a sport! A true sport.

to tell the truth, i've never played speed ball, its a matter of convenience, i have woods behind my house decked out for some tight paintball, there i play free, or i can drive an hour to a field pay 20 bucks and play. since i spent 20 on my last upgrade i continue to play woods, but we keep the boundaries small so its fast paced, a ball can be laubed from corner to corner

I still consider that speedball then. Alot of people call it "Speedball in the woods", which is pretty much what it is. No hiding, waiting 2 hours just to ambush some sucker, short games, etc. Sorta "half speedball". Honestly though, try playing some day on a real speedball course and you'll be hooked, especially sup'air fields, though those are almost impossible to come by

yeah we call it speed ball too, I set up bunkers and stuff speed ball style, but i wanna go to the "local" field soon i've just gotta scrape up enough money so i have 20 bones to spare +paint and air

I like speedball better than the woods because it is so much fadter and you have to be always thinking who is around you, plus the adrenelane is alot higher than in woods

yea i feel speedball takes much more skill than playing woods. you can hide out for 20 minutes without anything happening which can be bothersome to new and old players alike. More people enjoy the game when it is played at a fast pace.

Damn, simon, that field behind your house sounds phat. I wish I could make something like that, but I live in the city surrounded by people. I have to drive for an hour to play for free! It sucks. I go to a place called Paintball Adventures. Only one big wooded field, two small wooded "half speedball" fields and a blue barrel hyperball field. They might have pics on the net at pro star.com maybe or pba.com or paintball adventures.com. I'll check and see and post some pics at this thread, but it's certainly nothing special.

Personally I like playing in the woods. It's fun sniping people when they least expect it and I think it's cheaper too. Right now money is a big problem for me because I'm still in high school and I'm not going to have a job till this summer. So I'de rather play in the woods for now, but then again I really haven't got into speedball I've played it a couple of times and it was fun. Seeing the setup that the billionare has in his picks that looks like a blast. When I played we just had two walls facing eachother with openings and slots.

I can't stand speedball. It doesn't take any skill or tactics (well maybe some. You have to be able to point a gun in a general direction and be able to think 'hey, their shooting at that barrel over there, better not run to it') and its way too comercialized. I come to a paintball field wearing camoflauge and I get laughed at because "I must be a newbie" cuz im not wearing a paintball jersey and my gun isn't bright blue or red. Its like "dude, come to my woods field wearing your bright orange jersey with a red gun." all that color makes you an easy target dude. What I think speedball comes down to is who can drop 1000 dollars into their gun to make it spray an area faster. I love the woods especially when you have like 12 on 12 people out there hunting eachother. I like how you have to do stuff like crawl in the grass, how its like being in a war, but especially how you have to use your head. Like in speedball you don't have to look for stuff like broken twigs or trampled grass that shows that your enemy has been there. all you have to do is run out of your bunker and hide behind a barrel and peek out and spray and pray. hehe, I used to do alot of acid and watch war movies and playing paintball in the wood brings back cool flashbacks.

ok well woods is fun but speed ball is better
in woods u can just sit down and fart around for a long time or stay hidden and do nothing and not get out.
i personanly been told i suck by a fat kid .. who sits down and runs away when people are near him.in the woods.
he fires like 4 rounds an entire game and im out there bust ing my *** running aroud shooting making the "plays". and natrualy u will take people out but u have to be open and u get shoy. this angers me. that this fat *** will talk **** for doing nuthing and think hes good cuz he sits his *** down and hope no1 passes him!
in speed ball u better be ready paint's coming u sit down some's coming for u ..cant just runway like a sissy ..u will get shot!
speedball has way more adrenanline, fast, more action,,,just all around awesome.
plus in forest
when u shoot people they will run and act like they wern't hit and go wipe!
yeah try that in speed ball!
any way theres my 3 sense ..yes 3 sense
dont get me wrong woods is fun as well..and hey people dont just say wood cus u all probably have never tried sball.
havent tried sup airball but i want to!badly

I think it really all depends. Neither Speed Ball or Woods requires more skill than the other, however I do think that Speed-ball does require a better, faster shooting marker. Also I think that you go thought much more paint during a speed-ball game, but that depends on your playing style. I personly think woods is better, but they're both good-paintball is paintball, and it's always fun.

I have tried both speedball and woods play, and I like them both. Speedball gets the adrenaline pumping and it's always exciting. It's also more "fair" because the person with the better skills and marker (ok maybe not so fair) can do well in it. But in woods play, some newbie with a rental can snipe your @ss from out of nowhere. That's why I like it so much. While speedball is usually exciting, its also usually the same. In woods play, you don't know what's going to happen, so it takes more thinking. Yes, you need skill to play speedball well, but all you need to know is when to shoot and when to duck behind cover. In woods play, it is more realistic because you need some sort of a plan to cover all the area there is effectively, and even if you have skills, you can still fall into a trap (that's life).
I think you don't have to worry about sitting around in speedball, but speedball just isn't that sophisticated. One game is like the next.
Oh and by the way, speedball is a sport and woods ball isn't because speedball can be easily viewed by an audience.

i love the woods...i love the speedball. i prefer to pump in the woods but i also do quite decent with a cheap maverick in speedball. its a bit tougher as you have to generally expose more of your body but you can do it effectively...tho its a painful learning curve. only a fool will tell you one is better than the other, or takes more skill etc... woodball is a game of movement, position and general skill. its easy to spray but try it stock sometime. try that all out flanking move you were thinking MIGHT be possible. could work :). speedball is about teamwork, reflex and angles. beautiful, almost like chess in its own way. so to finish this rant...i say love them both, for they are paintball now. both of them. equally.
now...can i get a HALLELUIAH BROTHER????
hehe...later.

Speedball or woodsball, they both require same amount of skill to win, just different skills. Speedball is all 'bout reflex and paint volume. Woodsball is all 'bout stealth and one shot hits.
Most people play woodsball on fields that are much much to large. The games I play are on small fields, and a long long game might take 30 minutes (most are less than 20). I've played on woods fields where 50 ft visibility was rare, most shots were at 20-30 ft. and you were lucky to get two shots off. I generally use less than a 100 rounds a day in woodsball.
I'd say that the speed in speedball is what attracks most people, that and the fact that lets the jersey jerks show off (all dash and flash, burnin' through the cash (on paint!!)).

Ive played both but when i played speed ball i had to use my backup gun a sting ray with a jj. did ok but i think i would of done better if i had my other gun working. Right i i think i like Woods better since i have 5 acres to build on. I have my own wood field that kinda big, bigger then the field i played on. i think that if i get a better set up ill like speed ball alittle more. im tryin to build a speedball field.

one more thing. Speedball and Woodsball are!! both sports. Speedball is a glitzy spectator sport. Woodsball is generally not a spectator sport, although I've spent a bit of time watching from the sidelines, woodsball just takes a more sophisticated and knowledgeable spectator!!
And again, play woodsball on a small field (100 ft x 100 ft) you'll talk a different tune!!

I don't mind playing woods as long as the field is smaller. Not quite as small as speed, but small enough so I can find someone before I grow grey hairs on my nuts. I like speedball better because it requires athleticism technique teamwork and thought. People don't understand it til they play it alot. I was trying to get these two goofs in camo with rentals to get into the game and communicate, but they were scared. I mean scared! They sat behind a back bunker and shook their heads no when I asked one to move towards the tape to see if anyone was in the snake. I mean this crucial after loosing a back player on that side, I needed a spotter, but istead I had two chicken sh.t "sniper" woodsballers hiding from the guys in bright colored jerseys toting the best money can buy. That's bullhonkey brother. Get in the game. Play hard, play fast, play speedball. It's where the men are seperated from the boys, if your head isn't seperated from your body!
