View Full Version : First gun
Ok, I know the the components of a paintball gun, I did some research so I know the difference between pump and co2. But, what would be the best gun to buy for my first gun? I want something that I will not have to buy a new one in a 6 months or have to save up for 6 years to buy. Also, something that is versitile and can be upgraded. I weigh around 100 pounds (but weight is not an issue) and about 5 feet tall. What would you suggest?

How much money are you looking to spend? Spyders are good guns to look into as a beginner. Jay

I agree with jaronervin. Spyders are good guns :) I own one myself. Get a Spyder compact 2000 or compact deluxe. I have one and I love it. They are also very upgradeable.

ya spyders are great first guns IMO. my first gun was a spyder and i loved it, was easy to learn simple marker maitenance and they are very upgradeable if you want . . . all i put on mine (shutter) was a lapco big shot . . . spyders are good starter guns. some people will suggest tippmans too, you should go to a local shop and hold some markers and pretend you are shooting and see which are more comfortable.
I agree. Spyders are cheap, reliable, upgradable, etc. Great beginner marker.

Piranha they r alot like spyders but i think there better. I got my 1rst 1 in a kit at warped sportz Piranha g2 bl mask tank hopper elbow barrel 4 $170 also you will find there is an unlimited amount of upgrades [it fits almost anything Spyder] it is also lighter and think more accurate. Pmi has the best customer service 2.

I'd go for a Tippman as opposed to a Spyder. Spyder's are good guns, but if you get a Tippman 98c you can upgrade it to a much better gun than a Spyder could ever be, and Tippmans tend to be more durable, and cost less than most Spyders (Tl Plus and up). For a good Tippman price go to xpaintball.com

Actually Spyders can be upgraded just as much if not more than Tippmanns. Think before you post. My spyder has never failed on me yet. Of course I take great care of it and clean and oil it often and after everytime I play. One persons spyder on this board got sand shot through it and anothers fell in a river. They both shot fine afterwards. Think about that one.
Anyways...RTI, I would go with a spyder since you are a smaller guy. They are light and more compact than a tippmann. Also a Spyder compact is only $90 or less. That is $30+ less than a tippmann. If you have the money, go for a mid range spyder like the TL Plus or an Xtra.

I would go with either a spyder or a tippman.

Tippmann or a Spyder for a newbie. But I'd lean towards a Tippmann. Only because I own one and have never had a problem with it. ;)
Tippmann Customer Service is second to none if you DO happen to have a problem. Very good company to work with.
And if you feel so led, you can paint your Tippy. I've never heard of someone painting Spyder.

I am about to get a Spyder Compact Java 2 in 1. Those things are tight and have great ratings.. Guys that I have talked to said they have no problems out of them and upgrade the hell out of em.. Something to ponder!

Haha I gotcha there Crime Dog! I customized my Blue Spyder Shutter with detail work in black paint. I even named it, on the side in Japanese style caligraphy, it says "NartaniN" Heheh don't ask why.
But yeah, both Spyders and Tippmanns are good starter guns out there. But don't feel limited to just those two brands. There are plenty of other good starter gun brands out there as well.

The quality of a 98' and a Spyder are pretty equal, but in my opinion the 98 looks cooler

If Tippmans are more durable than spyders, why are they made of plastic? Spyders are made of metal buddy, and we all know that paintball guns made of plastic have bad reputations. Just look at brass eagle, their stuff is crap. Anyway, I am not a fan of tippmans or anything made of plastic .My first gun was a spyder which I upgraded A LOT. Then I got smart and just got a bushmaster.:D

i just got a spyer compact deluxe but i haven't shot it yet, though i've shot other spyder compacts and they're pretty impressive for the price (80 dollars!). anyway, get a spyder over a rebel, the rebel 2001s break A LOT, maybe the 2002s are good, and even the 2001s have some advantages over the spyder, but i've had bad luck with enough of them to say go spyder. also, do not get one with an installed bottomline (limits upgradability), and get the cheapest one possible if you plan to upgrade. the way i see it is you'll want an x-chamber, drop forward, and a new barrel and that's what you pay more for on a tl plus, xtra, or shutter. and stock kingman parts aren't great, later you'll want to replace most of them anyway. so i got the cheapest decent spyder i could find (also the most upgradable) and i'm getting really good aftermarket parts for it. it's not going to be a cocker or anything, but it'll be really good for what it is and customized 100% to my liking! so buy a cheap spyder and customize, that way you'll get exactly what you want with a price that's good too! also, don't buy brass eagle paint! never!

Well, obviously a genius here, if you'd ever used or taken apart a Tippman you would find that they are made of aluminum, not plastic. You should be an alchemist.

The Tippman vs. Spyder debate will last as long as the two companies do. I don't have any experience with Tippman markers, but Spyder markers work pretty well....some problems, but every marker has some. Tippmans and Spyders are both good markers...they're both inexpensive (spyders cost less and less to upgrade for the most basic markers), decent out of the box (though i hear tippies are better since all expensive spyders are are upgraded cheap ones), and pretty customizable (spyders more customizable but i hear tippman 98 custom threads are better, and spyders have WEIRD ASA/Drop Forward screw holes in the handles....no idea why but it's a pain).

Whether you want a tippmann or a spyder has a lot to do with you personal preference. I think i would go with a PMI pirahna over a spyder because they are a little lighter and they dont have the weird ASA and drop forward holes.
Pirahna:
-double trigger
-lightweight
-durable and reliable
-upgradeable (new barrel, x chamber, e-frame, new bolt, etc.)
tippmann 98:
-single, short trigger pull, i prefer a single finger trigger while most people prefer doubles
-heavy for a painball gun, like you said your sort of a little guy and the weight could bother you when your carrying it around all day
-VERY DURABLE AND RELIABLE
-upgradeable (x chamber, barrel, D\f) and has some unique upgrades for tippmanns only (e-bolt, response trigger, flatline barrel, etc.)
These are both excellent guns. It all depends on your personal preference, how much money you are going to spend on upgrades, how much weight bothers you, and what type of paintball you play. I personally would get a pirahna, but know many who would take a tippy any day.

Having used both extensively(pro lite and 98c as far as tippman, spyder xtra, compact, tl and se, and god knows how many clones)
I personally like the spyders. Its alot easier to post up with one due to it being more compactly built and overall alot shorter.
Upgrade wise, the only thing I am aware of you not being able to do to a spyder that you can to a tippman is the flatline, which i personally was not that impressed with.
I peronally like the WGP Dark Raiders, PMI Piranha G3 STS Pro, and the Spyder Xtra.
In that order as well. The main reason is the Dark Raider has got a wicked reg on it(STO Cocker reg), price is excellent, and I believe that they are using cocker barrel threading for the new models. Wether its cocker or spyder, the barrel choices are endless.
All of these markers mentioned are extremely well built, can take anything you can throw at em, and really dont have a limit as to what you can do.
I think spyders are better and more upgradable. Take my gun for instince. This is what it looked like before.

Wow, they used some metal for their parts, that's awesome! Too bad spyders are ALL metal, sucks to be a newbie tippman owner doesn't it.:D

Bunker_king,
You are the most blatent newbie i've ever seen that won't admit to it. A 98c is completely metal except for the trigger, bolt, grip panels, and elbow (even that has some metal to it). Let's see, what's not metal on a spyder? Could it be the trigger, grip panels, and elbow? Oops i guess you were right, the bolt is the difference in the amount of metal. But wait! Don't people generally upgrade the bolt to a delrin or some other kind of PLASTIC bolt?! That would make them even on the plastic parts!
If you have no experience with a gun, don't shoot your mouth off about things which you know nothing about. Why won't you post your birthday either? Let me guess, you're just some 13 year old kid, with no life but to bash people and their markers? People like you annoy me to no end.
RTI,
A Spyder TL+ or an Model 98 Custom is probably what you're looking for. I started on a 98c and switched to Black Dragun (basically a spyder with and e-frame) because I personally like the feel of a spyder better. Try both of them out and decide for yourself.

I would do with the tippmann. More durable and upgradable. Spyders really can never be as good as a M98 can be. And by the way Bunker_king tippmanns are made out of aluminum genius only the front bolt and elbow are plastic. And comparing Tippmann to brass egale is like a sin. In my opinion I like a plastic front bolt ratehr then a metal one it works better. It provides for less ball breaks and makes it cheap and easy to replace. Spyders are just not that great of guns for how much they cost to buy and maintane. I have learned from my mistakes and am never ever going to buy a spyder again.

OK.... This is the Newbie forum so we are trying to help not bicker. As much as i hate tippmens and like seeing them break (hehe) make sure if you do get one don't not oil it. My friends never oil their tippmens and i know anyday they are gonna drop hard and not come back up. Hopefully by then though they will come to their senses and get a better gun. I'd say syder prolly an extra.

Chill guys, I just have a thing against tippmans. It's just my personal thing, don't get all crazy now. There's no need to argue and fight, we'll just agree to disagree. It's just that a spyder was my first marker and I think tippmans look kinda goofy. However, to Silencer_1 who thinks I'm 13 yrs. old, are you sure you have your mommy's permission to be on the computer right now?
And you can call me a newb if you want, but you wouldn't be talkin long if we played, so cool down.
I don't bash the people w/ tippmans, because the gun doesn't make the player, i just plain out don't like tippman 98's cuz newbies all do. Just an inside joke.
