Well, plywood helps. I like to hide behind that. There was and article in APG or Paintball 2 Xtremes about making your field better. I've seen sandbags, piles of sticks are common, filling trashbags with leaves and stacking them, tires, but you can't forgot to pay to return 'em. But if you're playing at your own field, remember to have someone ref, so no one get shot without goggles on. Last thing this sport needs is a headlining article in the news or on t.v. Other than that, be creative

"backyard play" can mean a lot of things, depending on where you live. ;) I'll assume you mean in reasonably sized woods.
One of the most important things in woodsball is playing tactically. If you see an enemy nearby, don't go charging toward him screaming like a banshee. Instead, move slowly toward him and keep a low profile until you're in range. If he looks toward you, stay still. As long as your camoflauge doesn't completely suck and you're using trees and such to hide your movement (keeping a tree between him and yourself until you're close enough to fire), he'll probably look right over you. I've been shot by a sniper behind a tree at 10 feet before, and never noticed him until the moment before he shot me.
It's also important to take care of any of your equipment that reflects light. If you have a shiny gun, put camo tape on it to hide that. You don't need the enemy spotting you by the blinding glare off your gun a mile away. Same for any belt buckles, bright-colored shoes, etc. If you want to be able to sneak up on someone, it's important to be mostly black and/or camo. Black by itself doesn't work well.
Something else that works well is travelling in pairs. If you're spotted, have your buddy lay down cover fire while you try to flank or sneak up on the enemy. The only problem with working this way is that you're more likely to be spotted to begin with unless you're both quite good at moving stealthily.
Remember that if the enemy is in a fortified position, they're waiting for you and will hear the slightest sound you make. When assaulting such a position, you'll almost definitely have more success if someone's giving you cover fire to keep their heads down while you move in for the kill.
Finally, let me reiterate that you shouldn't fire until you have a clear shot, unless you're providing suppressive fire someone else. If you fire from far away, underbrush will more than likely break your paintball before it gets there. Not to mention the enemy will know you're nearby and your general location after the first shot.

On re-examining the question, my last post seems to be a little off-topic. :| You can construct a good bunker out of branches, if you don't mind cutting down a couple trees. While cutting down live trees is not good, it is free.

I'm wondering if this should be in the tippmann forum, and if it should have a different thread name. Such as...how to make a good field.

yea,
well we use crates and then put plywood on fronta it. we are gonna use leave bags. the woods we play in are very large, well according to east coast virginia standards. we live in the Virginia beach area, and woods are a luxury. the beach is what people do around here.
anyway. we have some pretty sweet bunkers and stuff, but this thread is now leading up to my question.
is the smartparts progressive, MY BARREL, a good barrel for the woods? ive had it now for two months, and when it comes to woods play, it has been moderate. should we trim the brush down? or is it my tactics?
or is there a barrel PERFECT for woods.

You could use haybails. I am thinking they would work good, but havent tried it. Going to in the spring though. If you could get used one for free at a construction site that would be cool.

I wouldn't use hay bales unless you can wrap 'em up and seal
'em in some sort of plastic. Straw will deteriorate naturally, and being pounded by paintballs won't exactly slow that process down.
Fox Holes! You have to love 'em!
Also a note on the straw: When the straw gets wet and isn't dried then it really starts to stink.

Many "tree surgery" companies (those people that go around feeding trees into choppers) have to pay to dump the wood chips they produce. This means they'll be quite happy to bring as many loads as you care to take and dump them where you want. They're not too good at following instructions, but if you're willing to spend a few hours carting around wheelbarrows of mulch you've got yourself some free building material. Take a couple wood poles and stick them in the ground, stretch layers of heavy (burlap) cloth or other very strong retaining material between them, and pile mulch up on one side. No real environmental impact, and very little cleanup to do if you ever want to remove them. Easily camoflauged, too.
You might think that the mulch would biodegrade, but the tree surgery companies chip them in unusually large chunks. This means that (1) it will not be comfortable to try and bunker someone over the top of them and (2) they'll last quite some time. The stuff we get around here usually takes at least a couple years to degrade enough to merit asking for another load to replenish it. The bigger the pile, the longer it takes to deteriorate. Thus, bunkers made of the stuff will last a very long time.

You might want to try skids. a lot of places around here will give them to you for free. a littel work boarding up the spaces between the slats, and you have some pretty good bunkers. standups are easy to make too- just use stakes to hold one on top of another.

go to your local power company and ask if they have any cable spools you can use.
our power company is letting me take as many as i want, i just have to go pick them up...

I use piled up brush wrapped in twine, or held down by rocks. Old Christmas trees work great to, and they are easy to move, so you can run around on the field with a tree as a shield....
About your other question- I would work on both your tactics and the barrel. Shop around, ask people, and try find the right barrel for the right kind of play. For me, it just so happened to be a J and J ceramic barrel. as tactics go, its up to you to make the perfect game plan and develope your skills accoedingly. The best way to do that is to just play.
