there are sevral types of dwell, but dwell is a pause or space between a action, for example how long a valve stays open when fireing,it changes those times, and the time between actions

So, how important are dwells, overall? What are the advantages/disadvantages to a particularly long/short time between various actions?

a longer time between actions is less likely to chop and pinch balls
but has a slower rate of fire.

a shorter dwell time makes the actions happen faster and inturn increases your rate of fire but can cause chopping

and the dwells also affect gas consumption

thats the very basics of it

the dwell will always effect gas comsumption! always!

this term means exactly what he descibed "dwell is a pause or space between a action" but in terms of paintball dwell is always refered to as and action that relates to the valve.

a long dwell mean that the valve opens and stays open for a longer duration of time. While a short dwell is used to describe a valve that stays open for a shorter duration of time. This in conjunction with your regulator pressure, has a direct effect on gas consumption... or gas efficiency. Other factors play a role in gas effieciency such as high flowing bolt, springs, barrels... but that is getting even more into over all efficiency, and not dwell itself.
